If I like Tomb Raider, will I like classic Prince of Persia? It intrigues me, but the 1 hour time limit terrifies me. Can you just use saves to practice each level many times until you clear it in two minutes?

there are no saves IIRC, but you can get around the time limit with a cheat. apart from that the game is great

>> No.10736954

>>10736921
You can save from the third level actually (with Control-G in the DOS version, and restore the save from the title screen with Control-L) and you can practice the first four levels with a 15 min time limit (with Shift-L in DOS, to cycle to the next level). It's mentioned in the manual too, so it's not a hidden feature.

Also, maybe a bit of a cheat, but you can make backups of the save file in DOS, if you're worried about overwriting it while playing or just want to keep the save of a certain level.

Then play it again and see how much further you get.

From level 4 you can save, just play slowly 1-3, restart playing faster 1-3 then from that just save as soon as the level starts and restart until you get a reasonable time.

yea its a really good one
dont worry about the time limit
you arent gonna save her the first time. once you git gud at the first couple levels youll be able to blaze through them and have plenty of time to figure out the rest

The term you are looking for is 'cinematic platformer'. technically Pitfall was the first of the cinematic platformers, but I feel like Prince of Persia really defined it on PC. Back in the day, I would call them 'PC Platformers' because it was a sub genre of platformer designed for PC hardware that didn't have built in smooth scrolling hardware. The PS1 Oddworld games do count in this genre. I consider Tomb Raider to be part of it too.

>> No.10737482

Pretty sure the word he was looking for was Oddworld since he was specifically recommending those games.

>Pitfall was the first of the cinematic platformers
I don't think Pitfall qualifies as a cinematic platformer.
The genre is mostly known for its fluid animation and realism.
In Pitfall you pick up treasure by walking on it, you fall vertically down pitfalls and experience no fall-damage, you lose arbitrary points when you fall or touch a barrel, you have an arbitrary time-limit and three-life system, and the underground travel system doesn't follow any real-world logic.

I’d just play the game the way it was intended op. The time limit isn’t crushing. If you fail, just try the next day and do better. You’ll probably lose all lives first. It’s possible you run out of time first, second or even third playthough, but much after that and it probably means you just really suck ass.

Just because it says "cinematic" in the name doesn't mean they are full of cutscenes.

Play the definitive version of Prince of Persia, I'm talking about SNES, it has more levels, unique soundtrack and you'll get an unique password each time you beat a level and it will know the amount of time you spent on that level.

Play the SNES version. You get a password at the beginning of every stage. If you feel like you've been fucking around in any one level for too long, exit and restart with the password and you're back to where you started. Although you don't have to be too much of an autist about it, as long as you don't get hung up on any one level and piss away a bunch of time the limit is fairly manageable

Also the SNES version has extra stages, a slightly longer time limit and looks/sounds the best out of any of the ports so I recommend it just for general purposes

they're "cinematic" only by name - there's no passive "just sit and watch" in their gameplay
if there are any "quick time event"-like situations, escaping them relies on uninterrupted game controls - completely unlike modern "tap this on-screen highlighted button fast or on time to make character succeed with complicated/enhanced action"

Yeah the selection is a bit unusual, Oddworld being the obvious missing one. I think Aladdin is a bit of a gray area too if it even is a cinematic platformer (being able to change jumping direction mid-air doesn't sit right with me). A lot of games I haven't played or even heard of before either.

I don't know honestly. From the looks of it, I think I'd call it a metroid-style platformer. But cinematic platformer is a pretty loose term, so it might depend on who you ask and how strict their definition is. Even the games that define the genre, like Prince of Persia, Another World and Flashback, are very different from each other in some ways.

I seriously want you to explore this feeling and try and figure out why you feel this way. Is it healthy? Does it aid your enjoyment of video games? What, exactly, are you so afraid of? Why do you need your experience to be different from everyone else's who played this game when it was new (and not-so-new)? What do you feel you'll be "missing", exactly? Why does the thought replaying a game fill you with dread?

I really hope you seriously consider this and how it affects your relationship to what is supposed to be a fun relaxing pasttime.
