Are they good controllers for /emu/, bros?

No. Dpad position is big gay.

It has the best d-pad of all controllers I've ever used, the only problem is that the face buttons don't use the same clicky button presses, they use normal membranes which wear out over time.
It also lacks a 6-button layout for N64, Genesis and Saturn emulation, so you have to substitute the shoulder buttons or triggers for it which is uncomfortable unless you are used to it.

Some people say the analog sticks wear out and start drifting, but I never use those so it's not a problem. Hell I could probably solder in a new stick if they started doing that.

>>10736808
This was honestly never a problem for me. The sticks not being symmetrical is slightly more uncomfortable, but everything not Sony uses the same stick layout so ultimately it matters little. I can play Katamari with this controller just fine, which is like the only game to take advantage of the symmetrical sticks.

Horrible, just buy a replica controller for whatever console you're emulating.

2D Games = Playstation pad.

I love the ergonomics of the xbox controller, but PS controllers are best for retro-gaming.
Even the PS5 controller gets installed and configured when you plug it in Win98 without installing external drivers

Don't ever try to discuss controllers on /vr/, specially for emulation, you'll get infinite different opinions.
Just go with what you feel like.

Depends, a lot of early ones are. Eventually they moved on to having 3d environments but Doom and Wolf3D have more in common with 2d games than 3d games. Although some source ports add features like jumping and crouching which allows exploration that more similar to working in a 3d environment

I use them but not for emulation. I swap around with different controllers to try and match the original's layout.

I really like the ps5 controller, but it really depends on your preference for dpad placement.

Not really, and if you're into fightans, it get worse. I mostly use a DS4 for multipurpose stuff and the DPad is more comfortable than its older brothers had.

Dpad is pretty good. If you are playing mostly 2D games though, the Saturn Pro controller is great.

I used to play with those shitty replicas but now I use xbox controller and I like it because it just fucking works with everything. Sure, not the best button placements ever for retro but it's convenient and good quality otherwise and great for all around pc gaming.

Playstation controllers have the worst d-pad ever conceived. Even worse than the Dreamcast.

Yes. The best thing about it is that it's heavy and its plastic feels high quality.

a lot of it is because it's the lowest latency pad solution and if it breaks from overuse it's easy to replace
louffy used a ps1 controller for years including when he won EVO, probably only servicing it every so often

I like their shape and how it uses a SEGA styled D-Pad at a time when no one else on a mainstream console setting did... but the asymmetrical style messes it up for me with 2D, an analog stick on a secondary position is less uncomfortable than to have the D-Pad on a secondary position to me, so I still prefer the DualShock 4 and DualSense as an all rounder controller, but for 3D XBOX's great.

Also, their battery's way better than both Sony's DualShock 4 and DualSense, so that's a plus too. Anyways, if they made an alternative version of it with a symmetrical layout, it'd be my favorite.

>Playstation controllers have the worst d-pad ever conceived.
I've never gotten the hate from them, they're a Nintendo styled one, but with the middle section covered up to avoid lawsuits, that's it, it works in the same way and feels just fine, especially in the DualShock 4 and DualSense since it's way bigger.

I daily drive a series controller to earn Microsoft Points. The positive is the d-pad is the best one Microsoft has made. The controller has a lot of buttons and enough analog inputs for a lot of games, like triggers for racing. However, for negatives, I dislike that the sound of the d-pad is different per direction because of location. D-pad down has more bass than up, right more than left, so for astute listeners in competitive play it could provide signals to others such as card selection. I have average sized hands, so the series controllers are pretty small feeling which interferes with play in games like Castlevania HD. The One and 360 controllers has a more comfortable size than the Series controllers, so I cannot recommend Series controllers for extensive play beyond an hour. If you have large hands, the problem should be amplified greatly. It depends on what you are looking for in a controller.

Only if you have nothing else to use. Ideally it's better to just buy the controller (or a USB/Bluetooth/2.4ghz variant) for the system you're emulating

>it's heavy
Your batteries make it heavy. With the official play and charge kit li-on battery, it's really light.
>its plastic feels high quality
Mine literally crumbled apart at one of the stems that holds the screws. The sticks also grind to dust like crazy compared to any other controller. Also the shoulder buttons.

I don't have a charge kit, so that might be a factor. How is climate in your country? Here it's pretty cold compared to Americas or Mediterranean. I always keep my controller in its original box, it stands strong after 3 years.
