>Where to buy
Aliexpress, gogamegeek, litnxt, keepretro, mechdiy

>What to know about brands
Retroid: Well built, powerful, but expensive (100$+)
Anbernic: Balance between price, power and build quality. Many available products
Powkiddy: Cheap, low quality builds, interesting shapes (square, clamshell, big screen)
Miyoo: One hit wonder
Game Console: Copycat popular products with low prices
TrimUI: Good build quality, shitty software with no good CFW alternatives

>How do I get games
Google: tiny best set

>What do I buy
Post your preferences: Money (20$ - 200$), Shape (horizontal, vertical, clamshell, square), Pocketable or not, OS (Linux, Android, Both), Systems (Pre PSX, PSX with extras, 5th gen + Dreamcast plus some PS2/GC, PS2/GC capable)

>Recommended devices
Prices depend on when and where you buy.
- Retroid Pocket 4 (200$, horizontal, 4.7" 16:9 Screen, up to PS2/GC, android)
- Anbernic RG405M (150$, horizontal, 4" 4:3 Screen, can play some PS2/GC, android)
- Retroid Pocket 2S (100$, horizontal, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, can play some PS2/GC, android, pocketable)
- Powkiddy x55 (90$, horizontal, 5.5" 16:9 Screen, PSX with extras, linux)
- Powkiddy RGB30 (90$, horizontal, 4" 1:1 Screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)
- Trimui Smart Pro (60$, horizontal, 5" 16:9 Screen, PSX with extras, linux)
- Anbernic RG 35XX Plus (60$, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)
- Miyoo mini plus (60$, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)
- R36S (40$, vertical, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, up to PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)

>Things I need to know
- Handhelds come with low quality SD cards. Throw them away and buy new ones.
- It takes some tinkering, specially linux devices.
- Overall quality of these products is very cheap.
- Reviewers get free handhelds, caveat emptor.

Yeah probably. I did the same thing.

The RP4P is objectively so much better it's not even funny. DRAMATICALLY better controls: analogue sticks, d-pad, and face buttons. Probably shoulder buttons as well because I loved the feel on the 2S + that sick new texture, but the new anbernig shoulder buttons remain to be tested in my hands. D-pad in correct location, nice bumpy texture to the plastic rather than the pig disgusting smudge-magnet slop they used on the 556, far cleaner android image with neat features like the analogue mouse cursor mode, lighter and pocketable, wifi 6, quite a but more power (not a huge deal for me personally, but is for most people it is, and it's an objective advantage), WAY more and better color options, and frankly it just looks more aesthetic all around. Shame my shitty old eyes really wants that bigger screen, and shame I have such a hard-on for built-in ergos.

I had a rp3+ that I ended up selling and my big issue with that was anything requiring analogs became uncomfortable in extended play sessions so a grip would be required. Also the screen was just "okay" and didn't impress me that much. Everything else about it was good though.

I'm taking a gamble on the anbernig mainly for the oled and ergonomics. My plan is to test it on day 1 and if the analogs turn out to be unplayable for platformers, I'm returning it right away kek

>>10735324
In Canada it's $60 too, but that's still a noticeable price difference for me desu. Gamegeek coupon will probably just be refreshed with something else like they did in the past anyways.

Trimuifag here (because apparently I'm the only guy here who owns one). I tried MinUI with it, and the results were... mixed. The stuttering on GBA was gone, and the fast-forward went a lot faster than on stock, so there's definitely some kind of bloat going on in the stock firmware that isn't present with MinUI. The sleep also works a lot better, since it's more like OnionOS sleep, where it just quicksaves and turns off, and then quickloads back to where you were when you turn it on. It also has a cool sort of "universal compatability", where you can swap the card between multiple devices and retain all your saves and settings, with even your quicksaves starting you right back to where you were on the previous device. That said, there's a few caveats:
>no LED support for the sticks (small deal, but the whole appeal of Trimui is the slick presentation, so kind of a bummer)
>no stick support for PS1 games
>PS1 in general has a bunch of audio stutter without frameskip
>systems are limited (mostly supports 2D systems with a Nintendo bias + PS1, so no N64, no Dreamcast, no MAME, and no niche systems like Wonderswan or Neo Geo or 32X)
>no boxart
>have to make a folder with a TXT file of each ROM path just to make a favorites section
But the MOST damning flaw of all for me
>NO shaders
>NO filters
>not even basic-ass BILINEAR filtering
This is the biggest thing holding me back from going all-in on this OS. I'm sure for, say, a Miyoo Mini, the screen is small enough to where a lack of filters isn't a big issue. But on a 5" 16:9 screen? Some GBA games have SUPER-pixelated art, where it's obvious they were relying on the LCD grid to soften it up a bit, but here you don't get that option.

Imo the price with the gogamegeek coupon is really what it should've been priced direct from anbernig to begin with. $200 shipped for something around the power level of the base RP4 (~$165 shipped) but with all the relative disadvantages I listed in my autism paragraph just seems insane to me.

I would go even one step further and say it should've been priced at the same point as the RP4 ie. $150. But I do think the screen is significantly better on a device that should be playing GC and PS2 and I think anbernig knows it too which is why they're charging a glorified extra +$35 for it. The retroid 4 pocket screen just ain't it for those.

Honestly I would've held off for another option, but I sincerely don't think either company is releasing something as strong as the rp4p but with the screen of the rg556 anytime soon this year and certainly not for sub $200.

>> No.10735472

>>10735454
I was taking into account it's $170 + free shipping with the coupon vs $150 + $15 shipping for the RP4 for only a $5 delta, but yes you're 100% right. They should really be price matched. Like you said, the screen is better and that does add value, but virtually everything else being worse drops the value.

Okay. Assuming the whole "MinUI hotswap" feature works as intended, I think I finally have my handheld gameplan set in motion.
>TrimUI Smart Pro for big-screen GBA, NES, and SNES at home
>RGB30 for GB, GBC and NGPC
>RG35XX Plus for when I need to play with one hand, like while driving on the freeway or vacuuming
>can just swap my one SD card between all three systems as needed
At first, I wanted an all-in-one system that could play everything, so I got the Steam Deck and the RP2S. Then I realized I had no interest in stuff like N64 and Dreamcast, and that all I wanted 90% of the time was GBA anyways, so now, having one system dedicated to each system seems far more appealing to me.

- integer scaling that will use as much screen real estate as possible on both gb/gbc and gba (there's some letterboxing on gba, but that's just on account of the different aspect ratio)
- shaders

ngl it is very much primarily a gb/gbc/gba machine (even sgb doesn't scale as nicely, maybe if someone comes up with a core that lets you toggle the border off), but it does those extremely well

Imo if you want a good "all in one" handheld to play everything, RP4 is the way to go because of d-pad in correct position. I find I play and enjoy way more games if I just play on one device instead of trying to juggle several for different use cases. If you only want it for 3D games anyways and don't mind some heft, then Odin 2 is probably your best bet.

My opinion is that playing 2D games with d-pad on bottom fucking sucks, and on the Odin in particular the d-pad is in a REALLY bad position with how low and far away from the screen it is. Or at least on the Odin 1 I found the d-pad almost completely unusable because of the placement, might be better on the 2 but it looks similar. That's my rationale for why I don't view it as a good all in one handheld at least, I view it as a 3D game only machine.

>> No.10737962

>>10737956
In the context of someone who wants an all in one to play everything, I personally consider it a deal breaker because I can't play 2D games on it. A smaller d-pad centric chinkheld to play 2D games while the Odin is for 3D works well, but obviously that's no longer an all in one scenario. Not there's anything with with having multiple handhelds for multiple purposes, but if someone DID want an all in one (not saying he does), I prefer the RP4 for that role.

RP4's tiny screen and shitty ergonomics makes playing ps2/gc gen games that rely on the analog stick miserable. You could get a grip, but that's just a cope. i can use a usb c port with an adapter for a headphone out instead but i have to restart emulation station for it to switch between that and the speaker, and if i unplug the usb c cable while sound is being used it sometimes makes it freeze requiring a hard reset... ive tried all the audio cards and audio devices listed in emulation station and reset after each one and nothing seems to make any difference at all

The other is an fpga with better support and more powerful, while being very expensive purely because of its screen, with great sound. Neither are perfect.
That’s it. No fanboyism allowed.
And again with the flashcarts, even krikzz had to release an update so its flashcarts would run on the analogue, because both the fpga and the flashcart use level shifters for input/output and the timings were all shitty between both fpgas.

>gpSP is an open-source Game Boy Advance emulator created by Exophase for the PlayStation Portable. Compatibility is very good and is recommended for using GBA ports of SNES games rather than SNES emulators themselves due to poor focus on the PSP. Its open-source nature makes it a good candidate for porting to similar lightweight platforms like the Raspberry Pi.
gpSP tends to be a last resort deal. Still think that chip should be enough for mGBA, check what MinUI is using.

gpSP. It has mGBA as an addon, but you have to rename the folders to activate it, and when you do, it's as slow as stock firmware, so it's definitely the core that's the issue. I still don't think their products are all notoriously low quality nor 95% of them, even. They are sometimes less robust than Anbernic's stuff yeah, but they are not the bottom of the barrel, let alone below the bottom. I see them as above Datafrog, Miyoo and Game Console, at best just above trimUI. Powkiddy is a mixed bag for the most part. Either way, the shitty stunt Anbernic pulled regarding modders and CFW coders never should have happened. Maybe ArkOS and GammaOS will become a reality on the TrimUI systems, including the Trimui Smart Pro due to this. And maybe also ARK

Also, some people have a really hard time getting ArkOS to boot on RGB30 and no one can figure out why. Not exactly sure one this one, but think it was also the RGB30 where some units simply didn't play nice with higher frequencies while they did on JELOS. It's a lot of work you only really realize once you dive into pisscord and see the constant mayhem. These people are saints. Just follow the retro gaming corps guide, it takes like an hour. I honestly enjoy setting it up and seeing my rom library grow in daijshio.

The only part that sucks are fucking with n64 games which have 1 million settings you have to tediously trial and error toggle for each game to get them to work correctly. Most consles work "out of the box". Gamecube occasionally requires minor tweaking. Havent bothered with ps2 though
