Of course. The fake news leading up to PS2's launch was probably the biggest instance of mass hype hysteria in gaming up to that point. People literally believed that it was going to be faster than supercomputers. Then it came out, got barely any games in the first year and the Dreamcast ports that it got looked or ran worse. The funny thing is that Xbox was the opposite: everyone HATED it before it even released. People were afraid that Microsoft would turn consoles into PCs and they were right.
