If you’re looking for something new to play or are new to the genre ask other Anons for recommendations and remember to gear up and have fun.

Last thread was a very long time ago.

Anon, Destruction Derby is also a racing game for the most part. It only has additional combat game modes.
In DD2 case, the game is basically Daytona USA without drifting mechanic. If you exclude DD from /vroom/ then Burnout and Flatout games should be excluded too.
Carmageddon is in the grey area: while it can also be beaten by actual racing, the game actively discourages you from doing and encourages to wreck your opponents instead which is a much easier task.
Actual car combat games like Twisted Metal and open world driving games like GTA and Driver should be excluded 100%

for some reason new rally games like Dirt (specifically Gravel) and then several random arcade racers like Shox all felt like I was driving on ice with a wooden car. I don't get why so many more modern racers feel like they have dramatically worse physics than a PSX game.

Collin Mcrae 2.0 (haven't tried 1) feels perfect. Touge Max feels perfect. Also Burnout 2/3 feels fine but simplistic. I guess it's mostly Dirt for modern games, something about them feels like racing on ice and it makes no sense.

Yeah, it takes getting used to. Best advice I can give you is this:
- Always try to anticipate your car steering a bit more than you want it to, especially early game.
- If all else fails, you can brute force most of the game by going high power and low weight. A PWR below 0 is basically game-winning in most races.
- Don't forget to do UORs. They give you Yen and sometimes even special parts.
- You can usually read the difficulty of an encounter by how fast they're moving
- Street battle locations aren't random, you can do all of your races in a single street by just lingering around
- Try to use your handbrake (Circle by default) rather than your brakes to make sharp turns
- If you're going to hit a wall, try to make sure you're otherwise facing away from it, you'll hit the wall once and you'll only suffer a little speed loss, optimally.
- Even without a MT Gearbox equipped, you can use L2 and R2 to shift between gears.

I agree, that's just the build I used to set the time, and technically this is a cheated run anyway. Trying to make a non-Caetla "all parts" GS code, that doesn't include totally invalid parts and also doesn't cause crashes, but I'm still missing a few parts and the existing cheat sheet for levels appears to be incomplete.

A personal goal of mine is to try and load the Windy's GP machine outside of the Yokohama GP event, aesthetics and all. We can get the "GP-DUMMY" body, the FC20 engine and chassis the GP car uses, as well as hidden GP-only parts that I've seen noted as being equipped during the Yokohama GP event, so I'm thinking it might be possible with hacking.

Update on hacking: I've figured out the slot limit thing. The game sanity checks a car's equipped parts in two way.

If a player has 2 DeTune -10s, only one will ever be equippable, despite owning two of them. But if you hack certain memory addresses to fill slots with DeTune -10s, then the next sanity check is to make sure you had the appropriate quantity of those parts to begin with. If you don't meet this second sanity check, then any parts you logically do not "own" will be removed.

More to come, but for now... 10 HP.

Correction: The weight parts generally don't apply. I'm not sure what sanity check was keeping only one GPS on the car at a time, but...

This hacked build is so light that it actually causes wheelspin at high speeds. It also likely explains why Racing Lagoon doesn't have wheelspin.

The game correctly views wheelspin as meaning a lack of grip, but its botched power\torque model makes it impossible. It also explains why, at least, why the part that suggests it would be a form of launch control was cut: No matter where in the rev range you are at the start of a race, you'll always launch from idle RPM. If you launched from the RPM you were at, the game would probably just instantly accelerate you to the expected speed, like some of the CPU opponents do.

it really does feel amazing to drive in, I'm genuinely learning things about driving just from playing this game.

like feathering the brake working dramatically better than holding it to slow down fast. can you tell this is my first Racing Sim after Forza Horizon 4?

side by Side special 2000 is easier, pretty sure it's the easier one. could be the other way around though. One has easier time requirements because the earlier one required you to be way faster than what most could ever do. I can tell you though, having tried both, it's hard as shit. I couldn't beat a single track and ran out of time no matter what I did.

gt1 and 2 can run at 60 FPS in emulators. you need to overclock the emulator and enable the 60 FPS cheats. only thing it breaks is the demos, so the license test demonstrations don't work and the rally mode is kinda broken (no one plays GT2 for that anyways)

ridge racer hi-spec is another option, i guess

the localization will always bother my autism, especially since its not even fooling anybody, theres still japanese text on the signs and roads, they just decided to ruin the immersion for no reason, as well as literally just cutting out the story in (iirc) shutoko 0. worst part is crave outsourced a shitty GBA game to some nobody studio that has none of the charm (i.e., consistent characters across the entire series that were also butchered in the first 3 crave localizations) and takes place in random cities around the world, but is still called tokyo xtreme racer. weird how some publishing studios like to pretend they created the property as if they didnt just scoop up cheap licenses from japan for a quick buck and butchered them without any care.

I do not remember if I posted this in previous /vroom/, but a several months ago or so I've been spending quite some time in 2004 Crash'n'Burn, and, man, do I regret walking by this game earlier. It has some very cool car customization options for a proto-Flatout kind of a game, plus a neat attempt at doing something new and creative by introducing oil and fuel spills that have a chance of appearing on the track in case of a car crash, therefore appearing in random places every time, pretty much successfully altering the track layout every time you run it. All this gives the game quite a loit of replayability.
In terms of customization, I especially dig picrelated for muscle car, which give it 8 pipes - supposedly one pipe for each cylinder. What's awesome is the fact that game actually treats each pipe separately, therefore each pipe has its own chance to backfire. When you hit the breaks, a configuration of 8 pipes is quite a chorus.
Overall, really dig it. Currently in progress of NFS Carbon and Road Redemption, but I'm pretty sure none of those a retro.
