That about covers it.
You'll want an Action Replay or something similar to play import games (I would emphasize the Salamander Deluxe Pack Plus based on personal experience.)
Also, if your Saturn won't save games, don't panic. Just get a new CR2032 battery and look up online to see how to install it, and you should be good to go for at least another 12 years.

How reliable is the Saturn? I bought a used Dreamcast, it worked for 4 months and then died. Bought a used Sega CD, it worked for 7 months and then it died.

I'm not a "console repair" guy as I am terrible (ie- too afraid to fuck things up further) at tech work/soldering.

I might consider getting a Saturn and just waiting until the SSIO comes out down the line.

I played through Panzer Dragoon Saga, Radiant Silvergun, and a shit load of fighters/shmups back in 2007 with SSF.

Saturn emulation only sucks if 1) you are so brain dead that you can't set up an emulator and a virtual drive or your machine is full of viruses that prevent any of them from working right, and 2) if you are on Linux or mac.

I've even built custom launchers for the emulators I'm currently using to unify emulator features to all be controlled via the controller mid-game.

An emulator not being able to play a stored image is ridiculous.
I have a cue/bin pair mounted virtually, I still get this then it quits.

A 'practically perfect' emulator is useless if it can't even start.

Don't blame the emulator if *you* can't get it to start, I have no problems with it.
As I said, the UI is not ideal, but the emulations works.
Try changing your drive in the settings, you're probably not pointing to your virtual drive. Either that or it's a bad cd rip, unfortunately most saturn rips are terrible

>> No.1072647

>>1072530
>An emulator not being able to play a stored image is ridiculous.

No it's not. It emulates the game hardware, not an entire CD drive. Plus you have sixty different image formats to consider supporting as well, at which point it's easier to use a virtual drive. Kega can also load cd images, but anything other than a cdrwin4 bin/cue will have issues with it. And it's still simpler than using, say, MESS.

That image is supposed to say "利用可能なCDドライブがありません." by the way, meaning that there are no usable CD drives. That can mean either that you have motherboard chipset/sata drivers fucked up, or some compatibility issue in your virtual cd software (possibly also driver related). I use the free Daemon Tools Lite and it works just fine with SSF.
I also recall SSF not starting if I did something that locked the CD Drive, like burning a disc.

I have a few saturn questions if anyone more knowledgeable than me has time to answer.

1. An action replay (4 in 1) pretty much covers everything I need to play any US/JP saturn game, right? Do I need any mods if I'm not planning on getting PAL games or doing more advanced things with it?

2. Is there any reason to get more than 2 analog controllers? Are there any games that are both Multitap and analog controller compatible?

Action Replay works as a cheat device, a region bypasser, and a 4mb ram cart. You can also use it for saves but you have to rely on the internal memory because you can only save on the cart from its own menu, not from games.
Which sucks because it takes long, can get confusing once you start juggling a lot of saves, and some games use huge save files that either take up the majority of the internal memory or don't even fit in it.

Also the Action Replay tends to die too fucking often, and while it can be saved by reflashing, you lose your saves. So getting an extra save cart is a must. Also you might want to install a region switch or region free bios (or a modchip and then region patch your games) so you don't have to go through the ARs stupid fucking menu every time.

>2. Is there any reason to get more than 2 analog controllers?

I can't even think of a reason to get one. Nights doesn't count. I think Quake used it for a kickass control scheme though?

>>1072747
>Better than the other ones. Far better.

Yabause is only good for its debugger, which they are progressively developing backwards. SSF had some ~80% of games properly playable going as far back as 2007.

correct. Most of the images floating on the net are bad rips. Especially now with Underground-gamer dead. Tosec and TRURIP files are all good.

To everyone having problems with SSF, remember that it uses PER-GAME SETTINGS. That is, if you configure it once, and change a game, you'll have to configure it again for that game.
To get around this, run it with no games mounted. Whatever you set up then, will be the "default" options for any games that don't already have their own ini files. Also, delete the "setting" folder from the emulator to reset all per-game settings you made.

Just a week ago I picked up quite a few Saturn iso's and had the exact opposite experience. Yabause and satourne were both having a mess of problems with radiant silvergun while SSF ran it like a champ.

Protip: Japanese memory cards works on US Saturns, and in general I think memory cards are region free. I got an official Japanese Sega memory card for $20 when all the US versions were selling for $50.

In comparison to PSX memory cards, the Saturn cards are faster and have much more space. I can't see every possibly needing more than on Saturn memory card.

I love Saturn. Have a NTSC-U model 1, a NTSC-J model 2, and looking to get a modded NTSC-U model 1. Some of the games I love and recommend are:

-Nights into Dreams (seriously like my favorite game of all time. Look into getting the 3D controller for it, as it will make it a lot easier)
-Earthworm Jim 2
-Clockwork Knight
-House of the Dead (goes for like 80 bucks though)
-Road Rash (only really if you like the series. Port of the Sega CD version)
-World Series Baseball 98 (if you're into sports)
-Fighter's Megamix (not really a fan of fighting games, so I can't really say how technical this game is... but it is a nice little fighter with friends with some interesting unlockable characters)
-Any of the Panzer Dragoon games
-If you get region-free (look into Action Replay 4-in-1 cart; available on racketboy and Sega Style store), I suggest checking out the Saturn version of SOTN, if you're a fan. There are some shitty loading times and lag, but Maria is kinda cool to play as, and the two bonus areas and items are kinda cool too. Again, only if you're a fan of SOTN and want to explore it a bit more... if you've never played it, I still recommend the PS1 version

The SSF author actually suggests ripping your games into disc images (raw with pregap check) and running them from Daemon Tools, because PC optical drives don't have fast enough response time and cause some games to crash.
