Well outside of gameboy the ones that qualify as retro are pretty shit.

Game Gear wasn't bad and NeoGeo Pocket Color was awesome, but GB was cheap and full of games people recognize.

Basically all other companies learned what Sony and Nintendo are learning now, nobody buys really expensive handheld with no battery life just to play 30 minutes in the car now and again.

My gameboy, the original one, would take four AA energizer batteries. They would last me two months. I know someone that had a game gear, six AA batteries would last fifteen minutes to an hour.

Game boy has some stellar titles like Metroid II, Link's Awakening, an amazing Contra game, six megaman games, and puzzlers like Megalit. And yes, I actually own a real copy of Megalit.

The game gear was roughly twice as expensive as the game boy and the cartridges were expensive. We're talking almost two hundred dollars new for the GG and sixty bucks for the first party carts. The game boy was 159.99 and the gameboy carts were about fifty bucks.

Game Gear has Sonic (runs faster and looks better than anything Shovelwareboy could do until 2001), Golden Axe RPG, Streets of Rage, the best version of the NES Megaman games, and puzzlers like Puyo Pop.

Dual slots isn't really a technical marvel, just a "meh" convenience thing. The touchscreen is quite literally fucking abysmal. I own one, I made my dad buy it for like 20 bucks in the box at some game store because it looked cool as fuck. I had sonic, fighters megamix, and it came with lights out. It barely registered the right taps on lights out, and you'd better fucking forget about typing stuff on it. The internet connectivity might as well had not been there at all, you needed a whole entire seperate modem for it as big as the console itself almost, and even then it couldn't surf the net or anything. just plain text email.

"Web access was text-only, and the later, single-cartridge versions of the "Game.com" could not access the web or send e-mail at all. None of the games had actual online play with other people, only high score uploads. The monthly fee, two extra peripherals, and clumsy and confusing setup which required users to remain close to a phone line to connect the console to the modem meant that only a small percentage of "Game.com" owners had a subscription to the "Game.com" internet service."

Even as an 11 year old, I knew I got tricked hard

I was just going to make a Game Gear thread.

I love my Game Gear. System is so underrated, it really hurts. I really only got into it this year. Now I have over 50 games. Here's a pic of my boxed collection.

The best games I have are: Psychic World, pretty much all Sonic related games, Ax Battler: Legend of the Golden Axe, Shinobi II: the Silent Fury, Land of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse, Power Rangers and it's sequel, Aleste, the Majors: Pro Baseball, Bust-a-Move, Shining Force: the Sword of Hajya, Dragon the Bruce Lee Story, Virtua Fighter Animation, Vampire: Master of Darkness, Dragon Crystal, Garfield: Caught in the Act, Streets of Rage II, Arcade Classics.

There's really just so many good games. People just don't want to give it a chance.

It's not just Game Gear, but pretty much every Sega console except the Dreamcast has some sort of Stigma of being "unworthy" in the presence of the almighty Nintendo

The NGPC is a better console overall, especially if you like action-oriented games. The Wonderswan has tons of RPGs...but you have to be able to read moonrunes to make any real use out of half of its library. If you can read and speak Japanese, it's a toss-up. But you've got Card Fighters, Dark Arms, the Metal Slug games, Cotton (if you can manage to find it), and there's more, but I just don't know all the ones worth the purchase.

game gears are well known to have faulty capacitors that start to fail about 5 years after being made. by now a good majority of game gears have weak or no sound, and dim or almost non-existant video.

it can also cause games to not read and the system to not stay powered on.

based on your model it takes about 10-13 caps and it will work good as new, very easy to replace however the crappy caps they used were these tiny surface mount style kind so if you use more traditional caps you will need to tuck them into open spaces to be able to close the case.

Due to the new gestapo rules of /vr/ you are NOT allowed to discuss NGPC anymore. It is a "6th gen" console according to Wikipedia (because we all know Wikipedia is the word of God) and is on the same level as the Dreamcast.

I repeat, NEO GEO POCKET COLOR IS NO LONGER CONSIDERED RETRO AND IS NOT ALLOWED TO BE POSTED ON /vr/.

the rules are right there for everyone to see: no dreamcast. You can debate whether or not that's a fair rule, but it's the duty of the mods and janitors to enforce it.
I can understand why you would be angry about NGPC posts not being deleted, but remember, "never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity." The NGPC simply isn't on many peoples' radar, whereas the dreamcast was a big deal and was/is hotly debated on /vr/.

>Is hotly debated
I've been here since day one. I saw the Dreamcast rule get put in place because AT THE TIME The WiiU wasn't in peoples' hands.

NOW, however. we are int he 9th console "generation". Dreamcast isn't really "6th generation" since it only existed as a competitor to the Playstation. And was killed by the SUBSEQUENT "generation's" Playstation 2.

The only problem it has NOW is that it's specifically called-out in the rules. And from observations there's really only 2 camps.

1). Strict rule-sticklers who shitpost every single time the Dreamcast is mentioned.
2). People who actually want to discuss the goddamn console and it's fantastic library.

I hate to say it, but this is very QUICKLY becoming a "My Little Pony" issue. The shitposters are attempting to make every mention of the Dreamcast look like it's the real issue causing the problems.

Bottom line and the easiest solution: Accept the Dreamcast for it's retro status. Because it is. Even if it wasn't 5.5 months ago, it is NOW.

Let the shitposters with their "GO BACK TO /V/" culture find somewhere else, and soemthing else to target.

Actually back in 2000-2001 it was considered to be looking like a goddamn serious competitor to the PS2 (especially at the 2000 E3), however all of those hopes quickly vanished when Sega threw in the towel and went third party in early 2001.
