Has anyone made a decently high end "universal" retro controller with six buttons for N64 and Saturn? Niche I know, but the whole hobby is

I don't know but DualShock 4 was such an abortion of a controller. I know you have to innovate on the original DualShock shape but those nub grips were not it. Glad they righted the ship with DualSense.

Some might disagree, but this controller is excellent. I've been using it to play the classics like War Gods and Razor Freestyle Scooter on the 64

This thing is great but it isn't universal since it only has one thumbstick.

I like both, though when I finally got to use my friend's DualSense for a proper playing session, the thing felt much better than I though, it just feels like a XBOX controller, which I like the feel of, but with the PlayStation button layout, that I think is perfect for retro overall, need to get one.

there isn't a universal retro controller and there never will be
closest you'll get in feel and general usage for basically everything is a 8bitdo pro 2
for anything you feel isn't suitable you may as well go out of your way to buy a controller for that specific system you want to emulate

>> No.10718495

>>10718187
Do it anon. I bought an extra with my PS5, my wife wanted one for some emulator stuff she plays, every time I pick one up I'm tempted to get another color. I'm holding out in case they do a transparent or a classic grey with classic multicolor face buttons. Sony is a hardware company afterall, they really hit it out of the park here, probably the best part of this generation for them is the controller.

Got one of these thinking it'd be great for fightan games, but it is a lightweight, cheaply made hunk of shit. Binging different controls in retroarch is a fucking headache, too.

I'm still mad about this. I was hyping for a dual analog Saturn controller ever since I saw picrel but when it eventually came out they ruined it by having shifty flat sticks. I know their excuse was bigger sticks might get in the way of buttons, but that's a skill issue I'd be willing to take the time to adapt to, plus they could have placed the sticks lower too.

I think the assignment was a controller with 6 frontal buttons for N64 and Saturn, that one doesn't look like it has an analog stick for N64 games. Looks nice for fighting game stuff though.
I think that's the issue, controllers either have good analog positions and no 6 frontal buttons or 6 buttons or lacking analog. There isn't a really good universal answer.
I used my Sidewinder pad for ages until I started playing games that needed analog so I had to switch to a controller with dual analogs but no 6 button layout.

Oddly enough it is the n64 co troller design which has the best implementation of analog stick, d-pad and 6 front buttons.

Any other design needs to compromise on the location of the d-pad or analog stick.. weirdly the n64 controller has pretty optimal locations for both d-pad and the analog stick.

>>10720334
Here is another that looks quite nice. But you can see the compromise of the location of analog stick and d-pad. It's as though they are wanting to occupy the same spot on the controller. This looks decently done and is probably comfortable in either use case.. but the n64 co troller is so weird because nintendo was trying to do something that no one else had.

>> No.10720813

>>10720797
Maybe it's because I've never hold one that's in a good shape, but is there really anything special regarding N64 stick area being larger than other controllers or does people make a big fuss about it for nothing?

>> No.10721009

>>10720813
The n64 stick had a pretty long throw.. it was still nice and precise for racing games, FPS or w/e. If anything the longer stick travel gave it greater resolution. I know they wear put on the OG controllers and become crappy but you can get replacement analog stick parts for those OG n64 controllers.

sadly the DualSense d-pad is bad news bears, I uninstalled the PS5 version of Street Fighter 6 just to keep using the PS4 pad on it. Inputs register all crazy and fucked up on SF6. I do play fighting games with d-pad though which might put me in a minority

One of the only good things to come out of a poorly received non-retro fighting games. There's four shoulder buttons that are assigned L1, L2, L3, and R3 to achieve four shoulder buttons + six face buttons.

The singular downside is only one thumb stick.

Fightpads generally don't have analog sticks. Also I think in a lot of them, including the one I'm posting and the one here >>10717249, the buttons on the far right are just duplicates of the shoulder bumpers which means they wouldn't actually accommodate N64 and Saturm properly.

I think OP is looking for an all-encompassing controller that has six unique face buttons, two analog sticks, D-pad, two shoulder bumpers, two analog shoulder triggers and start+select. This would accomodate every modern game and the vast majority of retro systems aside from weird shit with phone keypads the Atari Jaguar.

A decent Dpad which is the most important thing for retro games, and also a six button layout, which is less important but 6 buttons is really useful for megadrive, PC engine, 3do, jaguar, and N64.
