There is no lore to Bomberman games. Every single game is like it's own self-contained thing. Throughout the 90s they re-used characters here and there, but for the most part all the games were separate and there's pretty much zero continuity between any of them.

Not really deep, most of the series are from different universes and they don't even focus so much on a story so i guess the two most lore focused Bomberman series we have are the Bomberman 64 + B64 The Second Attack story and the Jetterz universe.

The robot angle originally worked in the first NES game where he was a factory robot. In this world, Bomberman doesn't make the bombs himself, he is simply an automated factory worker who has access to bomb making materials. Then the second game has him walking out and about in the streets. The lore now involves him making bombs internally with his robot parts.

All bets are thrown off in '93 and beyond. It is now established that he is part of some intergalactic space force. He is not a human-made robot, but a fully organic being from another planet, which just happens to be able to make explosive byproducts out of their own organic matter.

His appearance also goes from overtly-robotic machine to where he now looks basically like a humanoid wearing a silly leotard. And yes, each white bomber is most likely a different member of the same species.

They were going with the robot angle as late as the Dastardlies, which captured Bomberman on basis on him being the original model. I'd say it switched to the biological angle when they redesigned the planet, plus Bomberman Wars.
