I never really liked Half-Life 2's level design, the game feels like a road trip in the worst way.
It's comprised of long stretches of themed filler with the occasional physics or combat oriented roadblock.
Unless you get stumped by a puzzle, you almost never spend enough time in an area to make it feel like a place.
Combat is also unlikely to hold you up, most of the game's enemies are trivially easy, which doesn't help.

in the doom community, there's sort of a trend towards custom content getting more and more difficult as peoples' familiarity with the game's mechanics increases. wads from 98 are typically not nearly as hard as wads from 2015.
it's also much more common to find maps that are significantly harder than anything found in the original iwads than maps that match the same difficulty.
is the same true for quake? i haven't played a ton of custom quake maps but from the few that i have it seems that quake doesn't really have a like, the quake equivalent of slaughter maps.

Limit removing ports and stuff vastly pushed the capabilities of what you can do in maps even before you even start with map formats.

You do get a fair share of wads that aren't the hardest shit ever but you also get stuff like say Headless Chicken where it expects you to be pretty good at the game.

It's a horrific trend, exacerbated by speedrunners getting a wild hair to become Jack of all trades by pumping out garish overly difficult meme slaughter in an attempt to continually one up each other.
Challenge maps should still be fair and despite what any genderqueer speed demon feels, something being possible one in a thousand times does not excuse poor balancing.

Using Ironwail:
Whenever I load into the game, I always have to change my brightness and my UI scale. Even though in the settings window they show as the correct position, they aren't. Changing the value makes it work, but it doesn't persist after I exit the game.
Weirdly enough, the brightness setting seems to be below the minimum somehow. In the video I moved both sliders to the left. Brightness increase, and the UI scale increased as well.

This ends up feeling the same for Quake just because the bar was set lower: It never received an expansion as hard as Plutonia and the original levels were strict with the techbase enemies. I haven't come across too many "slaughter maps" compared to Doom but that could just be the popularity contest.

Didn't quite work how I wanted it to, I'll just make some togglewalls or toggleinvisiblewalls I think; I wanted the eye closed position, then a trigger opens the eyes for the fight, then when enough shooting has occurred, the bloody texture is switched to. However with all three textures corresponding to +0, a, and then b, when the wall is triggered, they swap between a and b in an animated fashion.

Thinking BFG consumes 40 cells per shot, you can only fire it about 7 to 15 times with backpack ammo upgrade before emptying it. That is unless map maker conveniently dropped large cellpacks for you to pick up. BFG also has a wind up before each shot and a small grace time after each shot.
Compared to Plasmagun at the same ammo consumption, it deals around tripple damage up close but falters at the long distance and has no continuous fire like Plasma. With 700 cells beat per minute, continuous fire from long distance can out do the BFG's dps per minute.

With super shotty, you have 25 to 50 trigger pulls with ammo upgrade backpack decimating everything on its path. Also it fires instantly with no wind up but only a mediocre reload time. Its ammunition can be found from cannon fodder enemies besides its ammo packs. Compared to normal shotty it deals tripple damage but only 40% slower. I don't know about anyone, but unless my mathcraft is off, I wouldn't call SSG any tame or balanced.

I think Quake 1 has the best balanced weaponset for singleplayer out of all the classic Doom and Quake games. Yeah, I think the regular nailgun is more useful than the D1/2 pistol.
I'll admit that I've played Quake 2 the least out of that set of games though.

Lemme try.

>Chainsaw: Two blades, more DPS and a little more range, overheats if used too much
>Fists: a little more range, has Baratus combo
>Pistol: More damage and way more accurate. Can maybe use its own ammo supply
>Shotgun: Fire rate increased a little
>SSG: doesn't need a change, but let it gib monsters at close range because that's funny
>Chaingun: Make it the Quake 2 chaingun

I can't think of anything for the rocket launcher because it's just a well rounded weapon. Plasma could do with something as well but that one's a little trickier in my eyes because it competes with the BFG.

Damage and killtimes are also important. You're looking at roughly 40 shells under the best circumstances to kill a cyberdemon. The BFG can kill a cyberdemon in two, or four if you're not feeling that frisky. That's a lot quicker than twenty goddamned super pulls.

IIRC Doom 2016 allows you to change difficulty mid-game unless you pick one of the highest two at the start.

I do the same. No saves mid-fight, but save freely otherwise, specially before obvious traps.
SPECIALLY on larger maps. I love them and I think there's a lot of ideas you can explore in one single large map that wouldn't really get across to the player if you split that into multiple maps, but for playing without saves, those are just pain.

this is just a test here. it's a little cumbersome... because it's retroarch and i'm fairly unfamiliar with it... but if I can get the controls working properly and make it easy to add the wads, I'll probably switch to it. runs a lot smoother than a java dosbox instance.

It's been going a long time, there's probably many duplicates as well as stuff which I probably don't even like anymore which I could get rid of.

I didn't use to sort my Doom stuff at all, but when I finally did do that, it helped shitloads with handling and accessing files, and keeping my projects in order, so I need to sort all that smut some day too.

It's fine, you're better off not getting caught up in other people's weird obsessions over how other people play it.

Maps were designed to be able to be pistol started because they weren't done in any order and needed to be able to be tested, which isn't the same thing as that being the intended way to play.

Just play it how you want.

man the transition from doom1/2 to doom 2016 is rough, suddenly maps are very vertical, you can jump and have to actually aim in all axis which i lost the ability after playing with only horizontal aim for so long, the check point system imo is better than save scumming but also frustrating cause i decided to go higher difficulty which seems to be over my skill level for now, having to melee every demon for ammo and hp is annoying and seems to be crucial but often leads to me getting hit after combo.

The maps are good but the mechanics are bloated for the sake of variety.
The designers wanted the player to vary their weapon use but it comes at the price of freedom of choice(Eternal is worse in that regard).
A huge chunk of the fanbase love the classics because of their straightforward and versatile mechanics and that simply doesn't transfer very well in a twitch stream because watching someone using his favorite 2 weapons 80% of the time gets redundant for the viewer...

Eternal is actually better in that regard because there's more combos you can do, because the playstyle is measured in them rather than individual weapons, it's just that this is unorthodox in FPS (until it and Ultrakill popularized it). >do you feel that the pistol, uzi, automatic shotgun, and minigun need spread?
Well, part of it is that Malice seems to have been designed with the intent to straddle the expectations people would have from Doom (extremely fast movement and general pace) with a more realistic tone. As both Doom and more realistic shooters had bullet spread for hitscan weapons, it just seems kinda natural to me. The pistol, uzi, and minigun also use the shotgun firing function (FireBullets()) with multiple shots fired at once with very low spread - which makes me think they intended some sort of spread but simply didn't know how to go about it.
I also want to differentiate weapons that share ammo types a bit more, and having the auto shotgun and minigun have more spread than the super shotgun and uzi is an easy enough way to do it. I'm also thinking of making the minigun and auto shotgun rev up a bit - albeit not as dramatically as Quake 2's minigun.
I'm not usually big on trying to 'balance' weapons in a case like this, but the weapon redundancy is genuinely a bit worse than NG to SNG in vanilla Quake. The pistol also needs at least some kind of drawback since it has infinite ammo.

I don't have any nostalgia for old versions of Brutal Doom, I'm not old. I'm just objectively looking at the newer versions and they all feel like this boring sludge of mechanics and systems stapled together without a clear vision. Older versions were more coherent and direct with what they wanted to achieve.

https://blood-wiki.org/index.php/Voodoo_Doll
>It picks the closest target to the player and hurts it. Some monsters are more...affected by voodoo magic. Zombies, for instance, are greatly affected by the voodoo doll and disintegrate when destroyed by its power. In Bloodbath [multiplayer] play, the voodoo doll attacks have a different effect. For instance, a stab to the groin does a monumental amount of damage. Stabbing the voodoo doll in the eye will blind your victim for a short time. Fun gameplay is still important, though, so we don't just blank the screen to blind the other player. Blood darkens the screen cumulatively, so the more eye shots you get in, the more blind the victim becomes. Sometimes you can even make the other player lower his weapon by nailing him in the shoulder. The voodoo doll truly rocks in Bloodbath mode, but the napalm launcher and Hellstaff really have our attention right now.
Does the voodoo doll in Blood ever have any body part detection system, at least in mods or does Blood 2 actually do it?

Raze is easier to play. It has GZDoom like slower speed increase. Aiming is a lot easier. I kinda like it better in some ways, but it feels too slow after eDuke32.

I might. I'm on the fence since I like the idea of "lesser ranked" knights being stuck with low tech gear.

Perhaps true this time, but it's still possible to find HoMs that only appear when you aren't playing maps in a compatible port (due to unsupported line and sector specials)
It's best to encourage testing in a correct port in all cases.

Ironwail runs larger maps better, while QSS has better netcode and supports more QuakeC functionality and more advanced particles - the latter you'll only really see in AD.

Should be trivial to fix, whenever by mapper or even by the lead on compilation.

I liked it well enough. Felt like you had 1-2 bad ones, 1-2 great ones, and then the rest were mostly just inoffensively okay. Not mediocre but not really notable in how nice it is. If it weren't for the entryway remake I'd recommend it, but I also only would recommend it because of how well it worked for its theme.
