Yeah I thought it was terrible, sorry. 9/10 enemies are poisonous, even robots somehow, and there was no development of the characters. I had people joining me who spoke at most one sentence and that was it, I had no idea who they were or what their motive was. The whole thing felt like it was made on a cut budget, but it's not all together awful - it is still playable, and the concept of different generations is great, just the rest of the game is so dull I had no desire to re-play to do the other paths. The twists you mentioned were pretty cool, though I don't remember that last one.

I liked PS3's setting and connection to the other games a lot. The branching of the story through the different generations was also very nice and it made for some pretty interesting paths.

That was sadly about it though. As much as I try to like it, it's a game with its fair share of flaws and I don't think I'd really want to replay it anytime in the near future.

It was very nice to see it being referenced in PS4 though, as it could have been easly left out.

I agree with this. I also want to add that dungeon crawling was absolutely a chore because of how slow the characters move and how random the layouts were.

It would be neat to see another Phantasy Star game take the generations idea, but then again we'll never get another non MMO Phantasy Star again.

You move at a snails pace, have you even tried to go around that lake for the first time? Takes like 15 minutes, just to cross a lake.

The encounter rate is too high, you run into an enemy nearly every 3 steps.

The bosses are bland, look terrible, and easy as crap. And every enemy can poison you I swear and even Wren and Meiu? They are robots, how do you poison robots.

The town soundtrack and both dungeon soundtracks are awesome, but the overworld is ear piercing and the battle soundtrack is absolutely uninspiring and loops too quickly.

Needs more story line too, not enough going on, no side quests, no communication between you and your party members.

And lastly. In Japan both the ground and the Sky had parallax scrolling, we just got the sky. Now this isn't a big deal until you get to Darkforce, when the bottom clouds should scroll since there are no top clouds, and they don't, so since Darkforce isn't very animated beyond an occasional finger twitch or scrunch of the nose, it makes the battle look empty.

Fix these things and you have an amazing game.

I loved ps3 , childhood game , i remember the starting scene and being totally fixated on the story, i manage to complete it when I was about 8 years old

The twist about it being a space ship is an awesome idea, but the lack of exploration of its implications really sucked.

Let's see what I can find in my Phantasy Star folder for 3...

This is the second Phantasy Star game I played. I played in the order 2,3,4,1. I lent this game out to a lot of my friends and they all liked it. While I don't think it was as good as the others I still enjoyed the game.

I think it would have been better with some more work. Wasn't it unfinished? There are caves you can't even get in to. I remember searching every nook and cranny for hidden items to open those caves. But it wasn't until I got the internet that I found out they were just plain inaccessible. But looking back it was still fun trying.

While I thought the character portraits were great, I'm on the fence about the enemy designs. Some were decent. I always thought the chirpers were cute. There were a lot of palette swaps but back then that was the norm anyway. Some enemies were just weird. Like that big scary head that wiggled its ears. I thought it looked like Freddy Kruger without his hat. Some enemies were a little indistinct and it took me awhile to figure out what they were supposed to be. Although I guess you can't say they weren't unique.

The animations were just too repetitive. How is a giant Freddy head hurting me by wiggling his ears?

This is one thing about the game I never understood. Why did they use Darkforce as the final boss. He had already been a final boss and a sub boss in the last 2 games, and also taking into account that there was a different dev team working on this game, they wanted to take it in a different direction and i figured they mind fine someone new terrorize the gang.

I loved PS3 as much as the rest in the series. I feel it gets a lot of hate for being the "black sheep" of the series, despite having fantastic moments just like any other of the games.

I like it too but I don't really get where those fantastic moments are beyond, Finding out your on a spaceship and beating the game. Hell the most dialogue you get is the first 5 minutes of the game, about 5 lines in between generations and the end of the game.

I doubt we'll be seeing a remake of the game like 1 and 2 anytime soon, but integrating this kind of artwork into it would give it some points.
