How do you guys feel about playing retro on phones? What games do you think lend themselves well to the funky controls. I'm thinking anything like a platformer would be out of the question.

>> No.1068478

I found the biggest issue more than anything was holding down multiple buttons. It's harder to do something like hold B to run and press A at the same time and hold right on the D pad while holding the phone at an angle so that you can see and your fingers don't cover a majority of the screen. That and some touch screens don't handle being touched in three different places very well.

But then, I have an old phone. I think most people here recommend getting one of those controller docks.

Touch controls are okay for turn-based RPGs, but if I was going to play anything else I'd get one of those fancy bluetooth controllers.

OH BOY TOUCH RETRO THREAD

I play my touch retro portrait style. It mimics an original game boy (or gba sp) so my fingers don't get in the way.

As for pressing two buttons, it really depends on the emulator. If you have a good one, you start to get used to doing a quick slide from B over to A to do that kind of shit. If you have a bad one, you're fucked.

I really like that screen protector D-Pad idea. I'll have to try it. It's better than my idea of duct-taping a wii remote to the side of my Otterbox.

If you have a wii remote, I'd use it over buying a Bluetooth gamepad that you probably will never use for anything else.

I use one of those Ipega myself. It's cheap and does it's purpose well. It's kind of comfy when you're not mounting the device but if you're mounting it then it might be a little annoying depending on your phone.

It's a good cheap solution. If you want a better one you might as well wait until the iControlPad 2 comes out. Still, if you wouldn't use one in public then it's kind of pointless.

IMO touch controls are garbage. Only turn-based RPGs and other such games that don't require any manner of fast and precise inputs work on them, and even then I'd still stay away.

Thankfully, I found a way to hook up my old Sixaxis to my phone, so I have proper controls now. All I'm missing now is some kind of stand to prop the phone up so I don't have to stare down at my phone flat on the table.

turn based games only

even very easy action games like kirby would be frustrating because the controls wouldnt be as responsive, you might still be able to win at it but it wouldnt be very enjoyable

Was trying to use Retroarch and the iPega controller that was posted. Not sure what type of phone exactly since I wasn't there when it was purchased. It's and LG and it has a pretty large screen.

>> No.1068708

>>1068702
Well, did you read the instructions bundled with it? Some of the ipega modes don't support different phones. (see: anything besides an Iphone) so you have to switch it up.
If I recall right it's the home button+ one of the face buttons. Play around with it and eventually you could enter it into keyboard mode. After that just enter Retroarch settings and configure the keys.

>> No.1068716

>>1068714
No that shouldn't be it.
I should have probably mentioned it but you need to hold the home button + one of the face button. Simply clicking won't do it. It would probably unpair the device to switch mode.
Like, just play around with it until the device you're trying to pair is a keyboard.

I do believe I figured out my problem.

When going through the input options on Retroarch, after scrolling past what I needed to select (iPega 9017 mode 2), it DELETED IT from the fucking menu. So if I missed it while scrolling the first time, it would activate it for the MENUS but nothing else, and would then not allow me to select it for the game. However, stopping on it (which is very hard because the touch screen often detects two taps instead of one) will actually allow me to use it for any emulator except GBANext for some reason because it doesn't assign a button to the A button.

Woo.

>> No.1068941

>>1068826
And after posting this, my A button stopped working in every other emulator as well. So yeah.

I know it's not the controller, because I downloaded another emulator and the A button worked with that, but the music for the game I was playing wouldn't play, and fuck that too.

I used to have an N64 emulator on an old(ish) Android a few years back, and nothing ran smoothly except for Super Mario 64. The controls were easy to get used to, but I ended up with over 15 stars or so.

I tried more greats like Goldeneye 007 and WWF No Mercy. No go and no thanks.

>> No.1070994

Probably not, since different emulators have a different d-pad placement, and you would end up shredding your screen protector to where its pointless to even have anymore. Perhaps someone should invent a touchscreen sensitive suction cup/other d-pad and button solution. This would be amazing, provided it isn't so stiff and sharp as to ruin the screen.

Bluetooth mustard race reporting in. Why wouldn't you use it in public? It's like people want to look like casuals. If not Bluetooth there's always Xperia Play or just go with a JXD gaming tablet.

>> No.1071020

Without a dedicated bluetooth controller, you can only really play RPGs, puzzle games, and the occasional odd man out (Sonic spinball comes to mind.) Anything else might have you throwing your phone in a fit of rage due to piss poor d-pad accuracy and the inability to hold down one button while tapping another.

That being said, it's GREAT for RPG's. The ability to use save states means that you can squeeze in 15-30 minutes of dungeon crawling or grinding during breaks at work/between classes/on the subway/whenever else you have a few minutes to spare. I never would have finished Earthbound without phone emulation.

Well the problem is that different screens are different sizes so they need to be moveable. you could just stick those to your flip cover though.

There are also these things if you're trying to look as casual as possible. I really can't stress enough how much better a proper game controller is than any of this touch screen stuff. I figured that out for myself.
