>Where to buy
Aliexpress, gogamegeek, litnxt, keepretro, mechdiy

>What to know about brands
Retroid: Well built, powerful, but expensive (100$+)

Miyoo: One hit wonder
Game Console: Copycat popular products with low prices

>How do I get games
Google: cdromance, tiny best set

>What do I buy
Post your preferences: Money (20$ - 200$), Shape (horizontal, vertical, clamshell, square), Pocketable or not, OS (Linux, Android, Both), Systems (Pre PSX, PSX with extras, 5th gen + Dreamcast plus some PS2/GC, PS2/GC capable)

>Recommended devices
Prices depend on when and where you buy.
- Retroid Pocket 4 (200$, horizontal, 4.7" 16:9 Screen, up to PS2/GC, android)
- Anbernic RG405M (150$, horizontal, 4" 4:3 Screen, can play some PS2/GC, android)

- R36S (40$, vertical, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, up to PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)

>Things I need to know
- Handhelds come with low quality SD cards. Throw them away and buy new ones.
- It takes some tinkering, specially linux devices.
- Overall quality of these products is very cheap.
- Reviewers get free handhelds, caveat emptor.

The only DS ones in production are clones of clones of clones and they work totally fine, you're looking at $10-20 from China. $20-30 from Amazon. Don't try and get something cheaper, as those $4 ones are clones of ye olden R4 and only work on actual DSs, they're firmware blocked on later machines. Of course if you have a hacked 3DS you can get around it, but the modern cards are easy and support (much) more reasonable SD card sizes.

God, I wish the software on the Smart Pro was better. The ergonomics are great, and I love the tactile click of all the buttons. I don’t even care that it can’t do full PSP, since I bought it for comfy GBA and PS1 with widescreen hacks. But the stock OS is trash; the options are pitiful compared to something like OnionOS or ArkOS, and all the systems are preconfigured with individual overrides that you have to manually delete and reconfigure one-by-one. The screen would be great for watching anime on, but there’s no dedicated video player, and I can’t even use Retroarch, since you can’t load Retroarch on its own; you can ONLY access it while in a game. And no one owns this thing, so there’s zero documentation on how to do stuff like boxart, or what to do if I turn it on and it stops reading every system that isn’t GBA. I’d normally return it, but I love the hardware side of this thing too much, so I’m just gonna leave it in the box until TomatoOS is smoothed out.

Is there any reason to replace the OS card if I put my roms and save on the 2nd card slot?
Aside from the inconvenience of needing to reinstall the OS of course, I guess I'd just be losing some retroarch settings like controller remapping? I'm new to the emulation handheld thing so I'm not sure if those setting build up over time to the point that it would be a real pain in the ass to lose them.

I posted the PSP Go the other day. I got the component cables and a Dualshock 3 controller and tried getting it all set up.
Turns out it's really finnicky trying to get direct capture going. The PSP has an oddball resolution, and my capture card really doesn't like that. Whenever I try to set it up in OBS it struggles to find the input, and then my whole PC goes through a BSOD. I didn't understand why this wasn't working for me when it looks like everybody else can manage it just fine. Then I found out that having an analog-capable capture card is rare among youtubers, they were all feeding the PSP through a Retrotink or OSSC to convert it to a normal HDMI signal that their elgatos can handle.
I don't have anything like that, so I had to use an ancient piece of software that nobody ever uses anymore in order to get the PSP captured: AmaRec. It actually works too because with AmaRec it can handle the resolution and signal feed in a way that OBS simply doesn't. Kind of works anyways, you can see here that it doesn't look right on AmaRec's feed so I still need to go into OBS and do a window capture to fix it, though it's fine because I was going to have to crop it in due to the way PSP games get letterboxed into the center anyways. It's ridiculous and a whole bunch of shit to get through in order to just capture a fucking PSP for youtube videos. But this works, and I can even use the preview window to play the games directly.

The worst part though? AmaRec can't handle the resolution switch when playing PS1 eboots, so I can't even use the PSP to capture PS1 games. If anyone has experience with this horseshit, please let me know.

>Then I found out that having an analog-capable capture card is rare among youtubers, they were all feeding the PSP through a Retrotink or OSSC to convert it to a normal HDMI signal that their elgatos can handle.
Yeah, those types of modern weirdos can fuck off with their overpriced hardware!
It outputs in a fairly standard resolution, I think it was 576i/p or 480i/480p or a 3:2 ratio then from there you just have to crop and resize back down. I used to do it with my ancient capture card and breakout component cables. Although I guess older cards wouldn't suffer half as many of the issues with detection as new ones do. If you're not seeing the entirety of the PSP UI then that's a red flag.
Sony had garbage fire software for the PS3 & PSP so it'd be worth checking while it's plugged in if you can change the resolution.

Fun fact: The PS3 would pull this shit too when booting content and run in resolutions it wasn't supposed to rather than scaling them internally.

Going to jump in and give a PSA on buying an amazon tablet:
While they are using a 64 bit version of android on their new ones now (I haven't checked), a lot of them are still 32 bit, have locked bootloaders, no root access etc on top of an ever more locked down OS where even things like workarounds are updated out.
If you can get one very, very, very cheap w/ a 64 bit OS and don't need to connect it to the internet then you can play the waiting game on it ever getting root access, bootloader unlocked or fire tool devs getting it to a workable state. How long is that waiting game? Currently even the 2019

Yeah, they've been running on 64 bit HARDware for years but they were only developing 32 bit for the longest time, apparently the new ones are all 64 but there's still way too much spook scripting for my likes,
Their weirdo walled garden and ever-enshittening ecosystem is really bizarre. I'm sorry Mr. Bezos, I know you want me to use your clock & timer application but it's shit. Their weird war against sideloading is too much when you put it in the context of small applications like a functioning alarm clock or calendar. You can see why their line of phones completely and utterly failed but there's less competition in the tablet market.

>I couldn't even sideload SEGA NET MAHJONG.
I'm not a huge phone gamer, I've played fantasian and NieR (64 bit) but I think the PS2 emulator is 64 bit only on android iirc and idk about some of the others. If anyone was thinking about getting one I'd definitely recommend researching it first and returning if it doesn't do what you want.

I have 2 basic questions:
1) Do the Linux handhelds allow connecting up a keyboard somehow and use as a microdesktop or terminal in a pinch?
2) How easy is it to synch an existing retroarch setup with a handheld based on

To be honest I hardly get the time to set up my normal desktop games anymore. Maybe this is too much power for me.
But then again the way tech might get locked down in a few year perhaps I should splash out now.

Anbernic is great and I doubt you can find a better 640x480 device, but make sure you get it for a reasonable price. The $40 handhelds like the R36S are very noticeably worse but serviceable as something you can take anywhere and not care.

Has anyone tried Ape Escape on the R36S? The analog sticks basically don't respond and I can only sometimes trigger a movement or item. Wonder if it's a AmberELEC CFW issue or if the sticks are just that terrible.

>Isn't it essentially just the Odin Lite but with different Android and better sticks?
Not him but I'm most interested in seeing how the battery life comes out with a less power-hungry screen but also a smaller battery. Kinda expect it to even out to Odin Lite levels, which was phenomenal, but it'd be nice to have it confirmed.

Well, that and I'd like to see PS2 tests done with a post-1.4 version AetherSX2. All the Lite reviews came out before that massive jump in PS2 performance.

It was a big buy (especially with Indiana state tax pushing it closer to 600), but considering how clean the animation is and how easy emudeck is to setup, it was worth it. Where as the LCD models I recieved had weird issues with the input (something about the way the buttons were had a LOT of deadzone) this one just feels way better to an autist like me that notices that stuff. It has me playing more of my steam backlog than retro titles admittedly. Lot of indie souls knockoffs.

Should I dip my toes in with a cheap $40 unit, or just go ahead an splash out on a good $150 or $200 unit.
Or should I skip over it all and just get a Steam Deck? Less portable though.

I barely get time to play games anymore. I don't really know if I'm looking for a good device, or a good way to just to get me to play more games.

Depends on what you're after and what you want to achieve with it. To some, pocketability is SUPER important, but that often comes at the sacrifice of power so pocketable devices can't usually reach ps2/GC emulation and beyond terribly well.

Now if you just want something to play on the bed or couch while you've got a background movie/noise on? Steam Decks your best bet as it'll handle everything including most of the ps3's library and due to the drivers being pretty well refined, a lot of the games on Steam as well... trade off though is that premium price, but if you're willing to spend 200-300 on a handheld that isn't pocketable in the first place, best just save the money till you've got enough to comfortably get an OLED Deck.

So yeah, big questions will be in.

Never hurts to start with something cheap to find out if a portable system will even appeal to you. Steamdeck isn't worth it for emulation alone. It's great for retro but that size and cost isn't worth it if all you want to do is play old games and not your actual Steam library with emu as a bonus.
Honestly it's not the cheapest but I think the best starting point for anyone will always be the Miyoo Mini+ or RG35XX+. Both are good, cheap-ish starting points if you just want to try things out for now, but depending on your needs they might be all you need.

So the FPGBC finally arrived (photo is not mine, didn’t bother taking one, might take it tomorrow).
It certainly has its quirks, but it’s a good low cost option for cart shovers compared to an analogue pocket or a modded gbc.
Pros:
>screen is nice, full non integer scaling is almost non noticeable, has pixel frame option for integer scaling, which I use
>runs games perfectly fine, with the following settings
>gbc - use gbc core
>gb - use gb core
>gb on gbc - use gbc core with gb block fix setting, otherwise some sprites turn into black blocks for whatever reason
>color palettes on gb core
>you can overclock the cores a bit, great for RPGs (the core speed seems now much better than what the YouTubers reported with the 1.0 version and on par with original hardware
>cable works!
>good battery life, better than an original gbc on batteries or a modded one on a LiPo battery
>charges faster than reported by YT bing bing wahoo people

Cons:
>audio is too loud and shit with a bit of hiss, I suspect the amp on the board or the transducer itself
>flashcart support is shit, I’m on the latest firmware version and the EZflash he still doesn’t work, ever drive x5 works. I’ll try updating the EZflash to FW 1.05 and report back (it’s on 1.04)
>no IR, fucking cunts have all the hardware needed but didn’t solder the emitter and receiver, might try it myself and see if it’s programmed on the FPGA (probably not)
>the boot logo HOLY SHIT THE BOOT LOGO MAKES ME WANT TO STRANGLE THE FUCKING CHINKS WHO DEVELOPED THIS THING FUCK

And that’s it. The worst is by far the boot logo, for fucks sake it’s fucking HORRIBLE.

7/10 would buy again.

The screen's nice, great for handheld stuff though a little small for FF admiring something like FF V.

Would like to disable the reset button if I could but I'll look into that later.
Battery life was okay for me, ran it down to 30% and only issue with battery so far is that it says it's charged waaay ahead of time. Like it reads 100% when it's at 40% etc so you need to unplug it for a minute to check what it's actually charged at. Not a problem if you leave it plugged in, but if you autistically charge lithium to 80% or so then it's gonna require some getting used to.

>SSH should give you full access. Check the location of the folders in 'Directories' on RA.
Does that require a network adapter? 'cause I don't have a USB C (M) OTG adapter atm.

I managed to install a virtualmachine on windows with xubuntu so I could mount the card directly there but the directory was write restricted so I don't think I'll get access that way.
I do have access to USB C to USB C and USB C (M) to USB A cables but so far I can't find a way to connect this stuff. Plugging USB C to C into my tablet or my windows PC really got me nowhere so far.

I'll see if it's possible to change the directories within RA instead or something fpr the short term. Would be easier for backing up and copying saves altho backing up over network sounds nice too.

The point is that it doesn't have anything over any other option, and was not conceived with the intention of that ever changing.
It exists to be yet another option, but offers nothing to justify using it.

I hope you and your uninspired emulator can eventually find some wrong to right, but until then you've developed the GBA equivalent of iDeaS.

bit too big desu
I'd have to punch the numbers into my FOV calculator but prob just a tad too big for handheld, 5" would be good, 6 too, 7" 4:3 might be pushing it.
It's like TV sizes but also the content you're playing. Handheld games scaled up on a big fiddy to sixxy teevee are awful to play if you're not over 2-3 metres away. You need to start scaling to FOV.
Same as handhelds and console games intended for a TV being on small <4-5" screens, there's details lost and it's harder to track.
2nd post kinda shows that even that PS2 era game is pushing into the limits of it, way too big.

The real enemy is rigid screen sizes. Why do we have to choose between 4:3 or 16:9 or 1:1!? Why can't the screen morph to the exact AR we need and size we need!? PROJECTION TECH WHEN

I owned one for a while, sold it to get an NA XL and I have borked hands but.
N3DS XL is okay but still too small imo, needs a grip to be perfect, nu 3ds reg is alright, great size and while I can't dedicate my life to owning four 3ds, I would get one again with a nice wide grip if I could because I think the screen/size was right, maybe not perfect for games like SMT IV but great for DS stuff and light 3DS gaming.

If your problems with the XL/N3DS XL are because of big hands, a smaller console won't help you where a grip would tho.

>I feel similar with my RG35XX H. No real point in two sticks since everything it runs only had a single stick at most.
I am a fucking huge noob to chinkhelds, I have broken hands, I need reading glasses to make the most of the 3.5" screen glued to my face in bed to make out all the details buuuuu-
-I switched dpad to analogue setting in retroarch and change it to the right stick to play onehanded with my left hand holding it.
I do get the 2 sticks being useless otherwise stuff tho, maybe for some PSX stuff, if retroarch really, really went deep with it's SDL2 implementation to match the heavy hitters like steam, even at the first hurdle, you could be using those sticks for any number of binds; before layers.
I think it's one of those things where you need to think outside of the box, be where the box needs to be or have experienced life outside the box first and foremost to understand why a "why the fuck did they do this" can be good. Although in this case clearly the implementation itself is lacking!

So I can kinda see the value, at the same time. I also see the value in buying like a cheap 4:3 LCD monitor or picking up an old cheap TV from freecycle and using a wireless/wired controller in bed w/ retroarch to experience the same thing with roughly the same FOV without reading glasses and without needing to map the dpad to the right stick to help my aging hand, in fact, with steaminput I could go many, many levels deeper but can my TV go in the bath u.u

Neat. I mostly use it while traveling and usually stick to systems that did not have/use sticks. I got it because I prefer the horizontal form factor to the vertical one and the sticks are just a bonus. I'm in my 40s but my eyesight isn't to the point where a 3.5" screen bothers me in my use case. I like to set it up with the HDMI to my TV whenever I am in a hotel or whatever.

If I didn't need it to be small enough to fit easily into a jacket pocket then I would have definitely gone for a device with a bigger screen.

>playing DS games feels like garbage outside of using an actual DS
>an actual DS can't do fast-forward for grindier JRPGs like Pokemon and Dragon Quest
>The Aya Neo Flip DS, which does have two screens, and can fast-forward, gets TWO FUCKING HOURS of battery life on average
Will my search ever end?

The only way your search will end is if Ayaneo can somehow do a Flip equivalent for Android. Windows handhelds are just completely unreliable due to their poor battery life.

Two issues, mostly. First, games who integrate the top and bottom screens into gameplay simultaneously (instead of using the bottom screen for menus or a map or whatever) don't look right unless the screens are oriented vertically.

Second, the DS touchscreen is just different from a normal smartphone touchscreen. It assumes you're using a stylus instead of your finger, so some games require a lot more accuracy than a finger would allow.

Feels like garbage on an actual ds too.

>> No.10699903

>>10699891
For the first issue I guess there is nothing that can be done, unless the odin allows you to swap screen orientation and controls (ala tate mode). But for the second, don't touchscreens allow to use stylus or equivalent on them?

What's funny is he said he watched a bunch of other videos about the device but
>complained about not being able to turn down the stick LED brightness, even though it was shown in other videos how to do exactly that
>didn't know he had to change the control scheme to xbox mode to enable analog reading from the triggers. this was also shown in other videos and makes sense considering switch controllers have digital triggers and some games/emulators actually need or benefit from that
>claimed the power was right between rp4 and rp4p. in reality the cpu is on-par with the rp4 while the gpu is about 20% weaker. in no way does it make sense to suggest it's stronger
>got worse perfomance on GX then most people do on their t618 because he very obviously didn't know to enable the dual-core setting. could almost be forgiven if every eceleb and their mom didn't run into the very same issue and talk about it in their rp4p videos just a week or 3 ago
>couldn't figure out how to display to his tv. admittedly this could actually be a fault with his hardware, but considering all the other mistakes he made I think it's fair to assume he's just retarded
>mentions the blue tint on his screen, actually a big concern I personally have, but waves it off as "anbernic will probably fix it with an update" even though they're notoriously horrible for not fixing shit through software updates with many of their devices literally NEVER getting a single update
>equates weight with durability because????
And on that note, I really hope he's wrong about it feeling heavy. At least one other eceleb said it felt nice and light at least, while another said it felt on par with the RP4P despite being objectively heavier (implied good weight distrubution).

Got an analogue pocket as a gift. Set up an the emulators I could find using the updater gui. Confused about ngp, ngpc, and mame roms. Anyone got a quick rundown on these specific cores?
Also extremely interested in the new screen filters (crt style, etc), how do I set those up?

UPDATES REGARDING THE FPGBC

So, an update for the firmware came up today and:
>flash carts work, even the shitty EZflash Jr!
>as I said, they solved the menu transparency problem, it's transparent now, but nice looking
>volume slightly lowered, but still has hiss, probably an hardware issue
>THE BOOT LOGO IS SOLVED AND BACK TO THE ORIGINAL GBC AND DMG LOGOS
So, my purchase went from an 7/10 to an instant 9/10. All it needs is the sound solved to be a 10/10 purchase.

Use the update on this link
https://github.com/makhowastaken/GWGBC_FW/tree/main/HWv1_1/2024.2.7/patched_bootlogo

It's the one that fixes the boot logo, otherwise you'll have all the updates but will keep the shitty FPGBC logo.

you're right anon and desu I do expect that to even out the slight GPU disparity in the real world at least, but these retards have no real world testing to actual base those claims on. that's one of their only jobs and they can't even manage that. They showed absolutely zero comparison footage with something like an Odin Lite (d900) running the same games with the same settings. Hell, they can't even properly test the one handheld the videos are actually focused on. All they have are the same meme benchmarks we have that show the gpu in this is a literally weaker while cpu is almost exactly the same... I say that, but in reality I know they couldn't even be assed to look at benchmarks either.
