Back in the early 2000 I used to like them, apply the biggest resolution possible to PC games, use the most aggressive filters to emulators (GB/NES/SNES/GEN), patch whatever to get "better" visuals, upscale the hardest my computer can go on N64/PSX/DS emulators, you name it.
But at one point I just stopped and now I just want the most original experience possible, even if back then it looked like shit, it is the way I want it to look.
I'm still looking for a GBC filter that accurately depicts the way the panels barely reflected light and kinda sorta made colors, plus the shadows of the screens and every little imperfection. I do have a real GBC I use to get my fix, but a filter would be nice for posterity.

re4: yes

re3 is almost perfectly upscaled. it's actually crazy. i'd say it's 95% there.
re2 is about 80-85% there, you will see a couple artifacts now and then but it's still very much worth playing over the original.
re1 is absolute trash. you're better off with a crt filter.
re4 is an insane work, the likes of which have never been seen in a hd mod pack. it is the intended way to play.

Theyre always terrible and I don't understand why. Most of them don't even bother to look the same as the original textures and just use random bullshit. There are some that get closer but then are too overly detailed and end up looking gross on these low detail games.

Some look good. Some don't. There's no single unanimous decision on which is better, it's on a case-by-case basis, usually determined by how closely they stick to the original intent and polish them to match the style and atmosphere of the original game.

There's really no better example than this one right here.

Gay when it's AI upscales like that, which often interpret grime and baked shadows as noise and artifacts to be removed. Otherwise, mostly varies but generally don't mind. Fucking stop using this gross misunderstanding of what dopamine is and does as an interchangeable term for "pleasure from affirmation".

Also, people are likely asking because they're trying to hear both sides of the argument to form an opinion. The staunchest supporters of each typically have their strongest points chambered to rattle off at all times vs. mealy mouthed horseshit articles/youtube videos that just beat around the bush and never take a stance.

And for the record:
>CRTs are ideal if playing on original hardware with composite cables, but not remotely necessary for emulation
>Game guides are often required by design for certain games to get past needlessly cryptic impasses
>Emulators are based as fuck and as long as they're "mature" emulators with reasonably accurate design to the real hardware they are pretty much the superior way to play, especially if retro on an HD screen/monitor.

>> No.10693810

>>10691734
He means tube TV you retard, these retro games were designed around the inherent smoothing effects of CRT TVs. This is why HQ2x and similar are the only right way to play these games on modern screens because they do a similar but superior version of CRT smearing to make the games look correct. CRT filters would be the choice, but they're processor intensive and often come out way too dim on HDTVs/monitors.
