Imagine a modern game requiring you to memorize and actively use this.

I loved this shit. You had to be pretty good at it, cause you don't get shields til something like halfway through the campaign. Some of the missions were bullshit hard too.

Colony Wars is also based.

It's 90% fluff, eg full throttle and match speed are all you actually use for dogfighting
You had a whole keyboard in front of every player, no need to compress it since some shit you use once every couple of missions is better to have on a key than not

To be fair, it's perfectly plausible to play through the entire game without using a lot of these controls. Some missions are more difficult without memorizing, but not impossible. Some of them are also redundant controls, like the throttle controls. You really only need Increase and Decrease. The 4 other buttons just make it faster switching to specific throttle speeds.

kek I remember dominating the early Star Wars space combat sims doing that, I think X-Wing Alliance fixed the AI to make it suicide though iirc

>mission: use your single a-wing to scan the enemy cargo ship then escape into hyperspace
>me: single-handedly destroy the entire imperial fleet consisting of multiple star destroyers and fighter squadrons? roger that

It is a small wonder, but I did memorize and actively used a lot of those for the games at a young age. Given the high difficulty, a lot was necessary for success.

Don't flight simulators still have controls like that when using the keyboard? I miss games like this though, where it's like a simulator, but for a fictitious ship or vehicle.

Yes, in fact, even more-so now, since the flight autists have taken over the genre. Now it's just about bloat-budgeting your setup as much as possible and doing flight test runs in VR for videos you're going to upload on youtube and masturbate to. All fun has been completely excised.

I wouldn't know.
I was a kid without a PC in the 90s.
All I could do is gaze at the box in the K-mart PC gaming aisle and wonder.
