How was your first experience with Super Mario World? Did you find out about the secrets yourself all on your own, read magazine tips/guides, got friends who told you?
Like do you remember your first Star Road, and how long did it take you to get to Special World? How much time to beat Special?
As a kid I never made it past Tubular, and it took me a lot to get there. Not sure how much but maybe a month or two until I found the Donut Plains star road, not even sure how long until I got to Special.
I believe I found Star World before I got to Forest of Illusion, but not sure. Vanilla Dome was also a huge filter for me, them magikoopas.

The Mario theme easter egg when you let the special world music play out for a couple of minutes completely blew me away.

When I got the final exit and unlocked Halloween mode it was like 2 in the morning and legit scared me.

It was like my first video game along with DKC. Fantastic game and perfect for beginners. I prefer it over SMB3, mostly because I'm a scrub and that game is way too hard for me, but I also like the look and feel of it, the cozy soundtrack, using Yoshi's abilties, the cape feather, etc. Land 2 is the only game that comes close, I also slightly prefer it in some ways, but World is still great.

It took me a while to discover all the secrets. Some of them I remember reading about on game magazines, like top secret area.
I remember getting to the secret exit on vanilla dome 1 by doing tricky cape fight before finding the red switch palace.
No game ever did secrets as good as SMW. It was secrets within secrets within secrets.

Super Mario always gave me unsettling, surreal vibes. In a good way, though. Not the sort of Disney vibes the series picked up after 64. World was great because the gameboy games I'd played previously, while cool, were obviously very limited in scope and presentation.

Super Mario series is pretty damn surreal and strange, it's just that we take it for granted since we're so familiar with it. If it was a new franchise that nobody hear of before, it would be seen as very strange.
It's also not a secret that Mario is more based on cartoons like Popeye, not Disney.

First experience:
Demo kiosk located on the north wall of a Sam's Club. Started with stage 1. Seeing a Banzai Bill for the first time was amazing.
Actual playthrough:
Honestly I don't remember too much of my first playthrough. Pretty straightforward, seeing Torpedo Ted in the credits made me curious to find more hidden levels. Eventually made it to Special world, where Tubular gave me a tough time. I don't think I had much spoiled for me, except maybe a friend showed me how to get to the Top Secret Area?
