Lotta talk about the new GTA map this week. Got me wondering, what's the largest /vr/ related map? Back in the day the FF7 map seemed enormous to me.

Too bad the FF7 map was so empty.

Nigga what?

Probably Daggerfall. I don't really count that though. I can't think of anything else at the moment.

What was that game where you're exploring an alien planet where the dude wears an awful orange sweater and runs like he shat himself?

Also, Ultima 7's was pretty big and detailed for something not procedurally generated or just endless tiles.

That's it.

God, that fucking jersey and running....

Daggerfall of course, or maybe Ashes of Empire.

I don't think Daggerfall should really count for the same reason that space-sims don't : there's nothing there.

>> No.1067942

Questron, Legacy of the Ancients, and Curse of the Azure Bonds had strikingly large maps for their time. The Dragon Warrior series also had some surprisingly large areas to explore.

square miles: dagger-fall

scope of the map: any one of those civilization like games thats place across galaxies

I thought the FFVI map was more interesting

http://gvgmaps.com/ffvi/

I pretty much shat myself when I got to the world of ruin after Kefka wrecked everyone

The Link to the Past one was also pretty bomb too

Confirmed for always having fast traveled. There's tons of stuff in-between, it's just boring stuff. Nothing comparable to the emptiness of space

Scale-wise? Probably something like pic related or Elite or something. In-game-wise? It probably is Daggerfall.

I didn't play FFVII until January of this year, and it still blew me the fuck away. I really wish I hadn't missed out on it back then, but I was an N64 guy busy playing Zelda instead.

Anyway, this was the first 3D FF I had ever played that featured a world map (I had previously played IV, V, VI, X, XII, and XIII), and it just made me HNNNNNNNGHHH in the best possible way.

The world map is an integral part of classic Final Fantasy, as is the ATB, a relatively easy to understand story with lots of party banter, lots of optional dungeons and equipment, and a sense of adventure. Final Fantasy VII has this all in spades, with the added flair of the 3D FF's cinematic sequences. It is by far my favorite Final Fantasy now that I have played it, and it improved on VI in every possible aspect, including the world map. When I got the submarine and realized you could explore all of the world's oceans, my mind was fucking blown.

One of the reasons I have hopes for XV is because the world map will finally be making a comeback, complete with vehicles and everything. I'm really hoping on that game to save FF.

Nope. Linear turns only. I always hated atb.

Flat ground (even in the "mountains") and trees? There might as well be nothing.

What's the difference between that and space?

There's really no difference between 1 square of nothing and 100 squares of nothing in terms of manufacture. Even more so when said manufacture is done automatically.

You can do the same with space.

Just randomly generate all the star systems and there, you've got a world 1,000,000,000 lightyears across.

One thing I really wish Daggerfall had was forests.

Like, there are trees, and I guess technically you could call them forests, but you never really get the feel of being in a dark and gloomy RPG forest.
