Nitro Racers. Comes with a management mode that has you earning money and upgrading your car as you progress. Hard but satisfying.

Absolutely not the same to handle cars. NFS is arcade, GT is simulation.

Ignition is good simple fun. My second favorite DOS/Win95 racer behind Nitro Racers.

Sega rally. Remember the car exploding at the arcade. Have never seen evidence that is true.

Does anyone here play F1 games? There's a fucking ton of them, 90% of them play the same and barely try to even look or sound interesting. Which ones do have an actual personality to them? And by that I mean a creatively designed UI, non-forgettable music, eye-catching graphics and AI opponents that bothers to try racing you. Real effort that goes beyond the very basic prequisite of having decent driving physics.
The ones I got are Winning Run 88, Ace Driver Victory Lap, Virtua Racing, F1 95 and F1 97. Currently trying out Formula One 2000 on PSX (not the EA version).

A little bit. I think it's a little faster, maybe like F Zero, but the big thing is you're a person in power armor with wheels attached so you can still move your arms and legs freely. This lets you attempt to input various tricks while driving straight which is how you build up boost, so you kind do like Tony hawk tricks while boosting to keep yourself boosting and making sure you end the trick before you have to turn.

Fastest futuristic racer i've ever played. Made by GRIN, who later evolved into Overkill and made the Payday series. Excellent game.

Played both of these a tonne when I was younger. I've got Ignition setup on DOSBox and I've still got my CD for 3D Ultra: Radio Control sitting around somewhere.

Enduro Racer on the Master System. The trick is pressing down on dpad when you hit a jump to maintain speed. The Japanese version comes with quite a few extra levels but the streamlined US version is good to start with.
