I picked up Z Gundam for the saturn the other day and for some reason none of the FMV sequences show any picture. The audio plays fine and the actual game plays as well. Anyone have any experience with something like this?

I was reading up on the saturns video playback and it sounds like all the codec software is actually stored on disc, so maybe a tiny scratch can throw everything off?

I have no experience with consoles that use CDs, however I do know my optical discs. Rub some toothpaste on your disc with a piece of toilet paper, then wipe it off with a coffee filter soaked in water. Don't do it roughly, just a light rub will do.

Some Saturn games require a VCD card?

>> No.1064851

Only 1 game requires the VCD card, and it's a Lunar something-or-other MPEG Edition. A dozen or so titles and few demo discs can use it to enhance video as well, but they do not require it.

Many Saturn titles, especially the later ones, store video data on Mode 2 tracks, which have less error correction. As a result they can store more videos on the disc, but they less resistant to errors. So scratches might just be able to fuck them up.
But personally, I've had multiple Saturns that could read cracked-in-two discs without as much as skipping the audio tracks (which have even less error correction).

Personally I just gently rub the discs with dishwasher liquid using my thumb. It deals with grease marks very efficiently.

Worst case, you can buy a disc polisher, but those are expensive and only worth it if you have hundreds of bad discs.

So, apparently your NTSC-U saturn need to have its language setting on Japanese in order for the FMV to play correctly, for whatever reason.

I wonder if any other saturn games with licensed video segments have a similar stipulation.

I really enjoyed the first MSG side scrolling saturn game, so I've decided to arbitrarily collect these cheap gundam games for the saturn. Even the Blue Destiny games are pretty cheap, so I'll probably pick those up next.

The Blue Destiny are the ones you should have picked up first

Well I've already played the games, it's just a matter of availability. The other games I found in local stores and on ebay. The side story games I found on Rakuten pretty cheap, but I wanna save up some money and get a whole big batch of games to make the shipping worth it.

why was the saturn's disc drive so good, anyway? PS1 and even Dreamcast are notorious for drive failures and loud seeking

>> No.1065435

>>1065316
I knew that the 1001 model PS1s ran very hot, but- wait nevermind. They do have awful disk drives. I remember now that I have to turn one of mine upsidedown if I want to run games.

Haven't had a problem with a dreamcast, but I've only ever owned 2. The PS1 and Dreamcast noises are quite nice sounds if you get used to them.

Yeah, if you play games on CDR, because the system has to seek constantly. It barely chirps on most legit GDROM games.

bullshit. My first dreamcast was super loud and I never pirated games.

That's a blatant fucking lie, besides cd-rs I had Blue Stinger, Quake 3, and it was still one of the loudest pieces of shit ever

The fan is very loud in my dreamcast.
