Okay, first take.

A short description of what this is about; I'm compiling a MIDI pack to be used with Doom/Doom II, this basically contains the MIDI renditions of most of the songs that inspired the OST of Doom (So far this WAD has Pantera, Slayer, Alice in Chains, and Metallica)

So far 24 slots and 16 songs have been replaced, my focus now is to find MIDI songs that resemble the eerie tunes that aren't actually based on real heavy metal songs. If ANYBODY (and I mean, ANYBODY) knows about songs that could fit the place of -let's say- E1M5, PLEASE let me know about it.

I'm planning on making a thread in the ZDoom forums hoping to get some recommendations for songs, and maybe I'll do the same in Doomworld, who knows.

In the meantime, I encourage you to give me feedback on what I have so far. If you want to make some quick tests, play it with Ultimate Doom up until E1M4, and then switch to The Shores of Hell and then play E3M1; or play Doom II and start from MAP15 onwards

>You guys are assholes. Mark has made one of the most technically impressive and refreshing doom mods of all time, worked his ass off for it and you berate him for having to deal with your petty bullshit?

It seems that you believe Brutal Doom is 100% Mark's work when this is simply not the case. A great deal is from others such as Mike12, Blox, Nash, Perkristan, David G. et al. In my view these guys are not sufficiently credited and your belief that Mark did all the work only supports this view further.

The only place credits are given are on the second help screen and I don't think many people even think to press F1 once let alone go through to the second, and furthermore the screen only lists names without mentioning what people actually did. I think at the very least the accompanying text file should credit contributors properly.

Mark, please do the right thing and credit your co-creators.

One thing is for sure, if BD stops being developed after what happened, it's because of Mark himself

He could've not payed attention to those guys who were arguing about the SSG problem and he should've not replied in the way he did. What happened right after that, in the long run, is (and will be) irrelevant

He's visibly tired of dealing with the stuff that BD has generated (the bugs, for example, that seem to be endless) Also he just promised on someone to work on another project at the end of January of the next year somewhere in the forums.

Hardmode's situation was just collateral, he could've not been one of us, but like I said, what just happened won't matter in the long run

>> No.1061479

I honestly wouldn't be affected if BD did cease to be in development. Never was fond of the "style over substance" atmosphere a lot of gameplay-only tc/mods generally have.

I'll always be a maps person. Only play TC/Mods if they include maps to go with them.

The problem is, WW took everything from the DoomNukem BD mod and it seems that some custom monsters were brought up in the process, and WW felt like compensating the non-existance of revenant variants with the only custom monster with seeking missiles that has been made: Vore

The problem with including vores is that in many maps when you fight with revenants, agility is key to surviving. He thought it was cooler than I did when later on I got chex quest in the cereal box, he watched me play and was like "huh, that's basically doom isn't it?" and then took the cd to look over after I went back to playing doom since I thought the guns were cooler. First found DOOM about 20 years ago when I was ~12. I hung out with this dude Pete who was a huge dick but his dad had a shitload of PC games, we used to play it on this big monster PC his dad had in the back of the dining room.

I wanted a copy so bad for my Tandy 1000tx and asked numerous times but he was one of those types of shitty kids that tries to get you to do a bunch of pointless embarassing shit for his amusement before he'd make me a copy.

Told him to fuck off and stopped hangin with him, and found out this IT guy who was dating my friend's mom had a shitload of PC games and would just make copies and photocopy you verification shit from the manuals if you asked nicely and provided diskettes. His name was Michael and was a total bro. Needless to say, from the day after I asked him and handed him a few hi-density 3.5"s I had a copy of doom until the disks wore out from xcopying those motherfuckers so much.

I still play the shit out of doom on a weekly basis, only difference is I use mouse turn now.

Pic related, from when I covered the office on july 5th this year. Runs pretty good on a 120hz projector. Gave me motion sickness like a motherfucker though. I thought Michael was so cool I decided to be an IT guy after I finished high school. If there was ever a job with enough leeway to sneak in some vidya between service calls it's IT work.

I also burn or copy anything my friends' kids want, since I knew how important gaming was and still is to me.

And the cycle continues.

Two levels from December '98. Not great-looking, with simple architecture/texturing and frequent alignment/pegging errors. Bit of a mix of Doom 2 and 1 style, with SLAD and BROWN walls, little bit of STAR*, but with Doom 2's earthy looking textures and curvy platforms. Map 2 is more of an indoor slime cavern with lots of ledges and pitfalls (some inescapable, unfortunately).

I didn't finish either because they kinda drag on (over 300 monsters in each) and map 2 in particular has a lot of SSG click-clacking against cacos and barons. But, the combat is pretty good. The maps tend to throw shells at you but the encounters are set up pretty well and there is a variety of cramped, outdoor, maze-like, and dark places.

Pic related is probably the best-looking area.

I cant get past the 4 caco trap that spawns when you take the yellow key because you only have the shotgun.

The Library (for DOOM 2), from October 95.

Very straightforward level. These books are probably the most interesting part of the whole thing, and...well, they're just fucking books. A couple of predictable secrets, not enough enemies, and quite easy for playing on UV. Even the one Archvile wasn't too much of an issue. Two easy to find supercharges and a megasphere ensure the player never runs out of health.

It was okay for a single level while I was playing it, but in retrospect, it's rather underwhelming.

This poor bastard was stuck on this elevator that just went up and down, up and down. Even on ground level, he would just spaz out on his little square.

Oh, and my health loss is embarrassing, I realize. You'll just have to believe me when I say it's an easy peasy map, but I'm just bad at hitting the screenshot key and not getting hit. Like I said, there's a fuckton of health in this level.

There's some other screenies, but they're not very interesting. Kind of like the wad, really. The Doomworld page says that it was made for deathmatch, so I guess I was just playing it wrong.

My earliest memories of Doom were way back in the early 00's, I mostly played Vanilla, though I also recall playing Doom with a simpsons mod as well.

Anyways, between then and now I would play it kinda on and off, a level or two here and there, but I had mostly forgotten about it. A few years ago I stumbled upon Real Guns Advanced/Hardcore, I loved it, and beat Doom 1 and 2 with it, and from there I discovered more and more mods.

I started discovering wads with new and fantastic maps, like Doom 2 Reloaded, Daedalus, and others. I also found more gameplay mods, Brutal Doom was rising in popularity, and of course I jumped on board to check it out, and I absolutely loved it (even if Mark is a egotistical douche), the brutality, the stupid one liners, they're a blast, and now I'm playing Doom across various saves with mods like Accessories to Murder, Psychic, and of course Brutal Doom.
And now I wait patiently for The Space Pirate and The Trailblazer.

It's been good fun.

Did another random wad today, and I think I ended up getting something well known.

http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=7654

fistful.wad (aka A Fistful of Doom), from February 97.

Seems like a total conversion of two levels for Doom II (though I always use Final Doom, just out of preference) that is entirely spaghetti western themed. Features nothing but 'human' enemies (and some reskined pinkies in the second level), so lots of grunts and sergeants in the first level, and some chaingunners in the second. Both levels start the player in the thick of it, and the first level in particular starts with this corral to the right of the player which is just stuffed with enemies, as you can see. Enemies shoot at the player from the long road, through windows and balconies, so it's pretty hard to feel safe in this wad.

This is what the main road from the first level looks like. Enemies are everywhere, so it's not a good idea to dilly dally about. The player has to explore the different buildings to find the keys, two of which are required for the exit door.

I'm using Zandronum, so the horses are emitting a bit of a glow.

The second level starts with the player surrounded, and enemies love to take advantage of high vantage points. Here you can see a reskinned chaingunner and some other dipshits with their backs turned to me. There was a lot more enemies earlier, which explains my low health.

Another note: Probably to mask the zombie dying noise, there's the WAWAWAAAH noise from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly every time you kill someone. I found it amusing, but some may find it gets old after a while. The revolver and shotgun use a custom sound as well.

Not the sort of imagery I would expect to see in Doom, but whatever. You just press the use key behind the statue to end the level (which is rather unclear, I'd say) and it goes back to Doom II / Final Doom, albeit with the cowboy enemies intact.

Overall, I thought it was pretty decent. I really liked the theme, and since there were so many gun-toting enemies, it was pretty challenging on UV and forced the player to constantly be moving. Then again, I've always considered sergeants to be a fucking pest.

Would be nice if it was longer, because I would love to play more.

Strife can be fun, but as much as I like it, it's not very good - it has stealth, but it's not very well implemented, as robotic enemies will still attack you on sight.

The Inquisitor is the single coolest enemy I've seen in a Doom engine game, though, even if it has shitty hitpoints for something that's supposed to be the game's Cyberdemon.

The past Doom 64 speedrun that took place at Summer Games Done Quick 2013 two months ago is now available for streaming at

http://archive.org/details/SummerGamesDoneQuick2013

Game got speedran by PEACHES_, a dude who truly knew his stuff, and even he got a lower time compared to his (allegedly WR) past run which is on Youtube. Now, I wonder if they will acknowledge this when they get to upload this run on YouTube (they put the videos first on archive.org, and then on their official channel)

The Doom 64 run is #96 in the playlist, so be sure to scroll down and click on it, alternatively, you can also download it to watch it later, just check the list of files which is located down at the video player

Back when we watched it live when it happened, I wondered if he would manage to beat the time since he has died two times already, but apparently he took an alternate route and just took one of the Unmaker power-ups to save time.

>>1066257

forgot to mention, during the past run (which was Metroid Fusion), no offense, but there was almost no one in the back watching this poor dude, and near the end of it, people started getting into the room. Also when the whole charity marathon was being promoted before the event, they put emphasis on the fact that you could donate as an incentive for some runs, and Doom 64 was one of those games in which you could donate to raise the difficulty bar a liiitle bit ("Watch Me Die!" was the incentive and it got reached pretty quickly)

Run starts at 6:10

Goddammit, I've practically locked myself out of enjoying any Doom mods now. Because I've gotten too attached to the glory that is BrutalDoom. Everything else seems too slow and clunky.

I wish someone would just make mods-of-mods to make them all compatible with Brutal Doom

;_;

On the bright side, having

>skulltag_actors.pk3
>skulltag_data_126.pk3
>brutalv018a.pk3
>brutalv018aSTWEAPPATCH.pk3
is pretty much a god-tier combination when combined with Oblige maps made for Skulltag. Delicious Brutal Doom features, Skull Tag weapons that have been brutalized, AND Oblige? Hnngggg.

Only problem is fucking Zandronum keeps fucking up the saves, so every time I load them, I lose every weapon except the one I was wielding. I can fix it by doing the "give" command, but I have to manually re-give myself every damn weapon I had before (which requires me to remember which ones I had).

Any fix for that?

It's a bit easy in the beginning from all the revolver drops but the difficulty gets pretty nuts towards the end. As far as weapon mods go, I feel it fits the setting better since they look and feel more chunky/gritty. It also helps that the enemies are generally more menacing with AtM.

Doom Builder does default to Hexen when I attempt to open /pol/.wad so its not like I haven't tried it yet, I was just trying to be somewhat humorous with the mess that I get every time I try to use Doom 2 to open it.
