I used to love Pokemon Blue but holy CRAP that game sucks. The crappier version by a mile, lamer exclusive Pokemon (excluding Sandshrew/Sandslash), less cool factor with a fat turtle on the cover compared to a freaking fire-tailed dragon. Version red was better, hell even Yellow was better. Pokemon Blue was the stepchild of Gen 1 and that was the weakest generation in terms of graphics, balance, & variety too.

I've always enjoyed Renegade for the NES. I'm not going to pretend it plays well and it has a fucking maze in the last level that can send you back to the start of the game but once you wrap your head around the mechanics it starts to be sort of fun. I also like a lot of the backgrounds and environments in the game. They trigger some odd quasi-nostalgic emotions from me and I don't know why. I think a lot of them qualify for what zoomers call "liminal spaces."

>Vileplume vs Victreebel: Glass cannons are better than being half-assed at everything like Vileplume, not to mention Vileplume doesn't get Razor Leaf
>Arcanine vs Ninetales: Ninetales has the higher Special stat in gen 1, letting it make better use of its fire moves
>Primeape vs Persian: Fighting types are shit in gen 1, while speedy STAB Slash is god-tier
>Electabuzz vs Magmar: Red wins for once, since Fire types are mediocre in gen 1
>Scyther vs Pinsir: They're both shit due to their awful movepools and them learning no powerful Bug moves to make use of their high stats
Blue's exclusives are easily superior.

Design wise, Red destroys almost everything Blue had to offer. Scyther was and always will be more popular than Pinsir. Vileplume had stronger stats than Victree. Arcanine can learn Dragon Rage and also Hyper Beam Ninetails to death. Arbok was literally used by an Elite 4 member, and was far more recognizable in the show. Sandslash is overall the type advantage, but there you go. I already said Sandshrew line was better. Also, Electabuzz would cave in Magmar's skull with his Thunder Punch. Blue was the trash version, weakest overall from the weakest generation of Pokemon. Charizard on the cover was the big indicator too. It was like the victory artwork, while Blastoise was the beta cucked version. Red also sold way more than Blue, but keep trying. I love it when 4channers get heated over Pokemon.

Deadly Towers has got to be the most shoddy game ever made, everything about it is pure glitchjank and monster hp design by random number generator, and worst of all trying to navigate its utterly incomprehensible non-euclidean map is the closest a video game can get to simulating the experience of an actual schizoid psychotic break, and I love it (carefully, from afar, without making direct eye contact to provoke it).

It can be fun but you have to really put yourself in a particular mindset. The thrill of the game doesn't come from playing with systems, or a lengthy movie-like cutscene. The thrill comes from being able to buy an axe so you can finally kill Wolf Lords in one hit. Once you accept that, it becomes kind of addictive.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories
It has one of the msot basic card system where big numbers win and you essentially just grind endlessly to get the objectively better cards, at that point defeating enemies becomes simple... but I love it, the atmosphere and OST is 2nd to none, especially the part where you go into the shrines where the High Mages are, it's so moody and SOVL, and getting better cards is quite fun.
Also, the part where you save Tea and she turns into your sex slave to thank you was a just such a major highlight for me, I wasn't expecting that at all, but I'm grateful that they put that in for me.

Mismatched designs? Are you talking about the janky real person PC models? Otherwise I'm not sure what you're talking about.
Also, the problem with Darkmoor isn't the number of enemies, it's that every single one of them spams annoying status effect attacks. Half the fun of the MM6-8 games is mowing down hordes of enemies.

It was a pretty unique game actually. It was a mix between Uncharted Waters and some of the gold box battle system.

Except the basic character generation sucked, broken reputation system that doesn’t seem to do anything anyway, the missions were super repetitive, and ship to ship fights against anything other than human crews was a death wish typically… Mass umber hulk crews with Illithids would trash you.

I still liked the calm music and buying the weapons systems on the ships for the ship on ship fights.

Horribly put together game, but Inwas still charmed.

World Cup Italia '90 on SEGA Master System
It's got 8 players on each team instead of 11, the only reliable way to score is to do a sideways pass as the keeper comes out of his goal so you can go and shoot into an open net, which makes goals in this look the same, the graphics and sounds are nothing special, passing's often intercepted and a long pass always go a bit to the side instead of in a straight line regardless of how you aim it, it sucks to shoot as the keeper always saves it if its not with the method I mentioned earlier, and the defending side of things also isn't very good as most of your tackles miss the ball completely...
I still adore it though, when I get a string of good passes going the feeling is quite nice, and it's so fun to dribble past opponents from the back, as you slowly make your way up, or just surprise them with a quick counter attack to score, I even beat this with the weakest team in the lineup, China, and teams feel so different and unique, I really struggled, but it felt satisfying to make it.

Lego rock raiders, the ps1 version and PAL version to be spefic, the usa version is even rougher in some parts, kinda feels like beta version, but anyway.

>shitty graphics, your character is tiny and everything looks pixelated mess and samey
>controls are confusing at first, and vehicles has weird tank controls
>jumping has cooldown
>characters has their own special skills but are meaningless in most cases
>one character can zoom out the view further than others, but it has glitch that when it goes back, it zooms in more than before using it, some other character spefic skills dont even work or do anything
>breaking rocks takes forever, and its not always clear which ones you can break, and then some requires spefic vehicle too, which are sometimes hard to tell even with the radar thing
>minimap that is just bunch of dots and useless at most time
>some missions has very strict time limit, especially for going gold medal
>veeeeery long loading times, especially on real ps1
>co-op missions are even worse since its not split screen so you cant leave the screen so its easy to miss jump and fall into lava/water and die
>if you die, you lose that character until you beat some missions with others, so its possible to get stuck on the slow character that cant beat some time restricted missions
>in USA version it forces you to use spefic characters and do missions in certain order, while in PAL you can choose whoever you want and whichever mission you want (I haven't completed the USA version so idk if its just the couple first ones)

I actually liked that. You could move around quickly with the camera and then when you interacted with something, Gabriel just teleported to where you were and walked in from off camera, as though he'd been with you all along.

It wasn't perfect, but I think it was one of the better solutions to make a fully explorable 3D adventure game that still felt and played as fast as an old point and click game.

>The atmosphere and OST is 2nd to none

This is exactly why I like it so much and why so many people have nostalgia for it. It 'felt' a lot different to the TV show (at least the 4kids version we all watched).

What do you mean incredibly flawed? It's a great game and certainly the best in its series.

>> No.10639401

Yes exactly this is why I liked it. You're in a 3D world and looking around freely, want to see if there's something in a bin? Float over and look down into it. Want to see something in more detail? Zoom in yourself. If it was by accident that the free roam camera became a thing then it was a beautiful accident.

This is compared to other 2D > 3D transitions where they either didn't know what to do with 3D so just added a bunch of box puzzles or whatever (Broken Sword 3) or where the basic design of the game was largely the same as the 2D games except now they had a 3D coat of paint and often the pixel hunting aspect was worsened (Broken Sword 4, Monkey Island 4).

I admit it was really janky and I think the obtuseness of some of the puzzles actually ruined the engine's potential but it did something with the transition to 3D which other games failed to achieve.

I like your way of thinking, but Gabriel Knight 3 fucking sucked. Tank controls were beyond awful, the hud/inventory was abysmal and the puzzles were obtuse even for sierra logic.

It's a shame because I loved GK1 as ine of the finest, most atmospheric games of its day and even today and GK2 is the best fmv adventure game ever made, so 3 was a gut punch in every meaning of the word.

Specifically the original ps1
>difficulty comes from complete lack of qa testing
>music takes ages to kick in, lasts 20 seconds, then cuts out again
>not using 99 code? then spend 7 hours farming for extra lives that DON'T respawn
>hoops don't work if you hold punch by accident
>clouds love to eat jump inputs

But god healp me it's fun a hell when you get into that zone, and it all actually works

>ITT: Incredibly flawed games you like
Venom/Spider-Man: Separation Anxiety (1995)

Well... it's a beat 'em up where, after you pass its 1st level, only has 3 main enemy types that keep repeating forever, with 1 in particular taking up I think 90% of the enemy encounters as a whole, if that wasn't enough, the bosses, which is where I suppose you'd get more variety, has some of 'em repeat 3+ times... it's ridiculous and lazy. Also, its grabbing mechanic is a pain because you grab on enemies constantly when you don't want to, just to expose yourself to taking hits from surrouding enemies, you also barely get to use Spider-Man's and Venom's powers, very little actual wall crawl and web sling action, it's just punching the same few enemies and getting hit in way that feel very cheap... I still really like this one for some reason, that boss rush at the end can fuck itself though.

I think it's due to a few, but very important, sides of it. In both versions, but especially on SNES, its got a killer OST, not iconic as Maximum Carnage was, but still great and fitting to the adventure, its also got a satisfying punch SFX, and this genre manages to be satisfying as long as you don't go and mess up too much, something like Sword of Sodan. I also love the look and story it goes for.

It had more than one way to interact with things, which was pretty old-fashioned for an adventure game at that time. But I liked that. Too many adventure games went the simplified click-to-interact route, including GK2.

Yeah, land battles are the worst part of the game, with Dune II-tier respawning turrets. Also surprise volcano eruption on your first island's iron mine.
Letting aside those minor flaws, the economy and visuals are just peak comfy. I also played 1404, that is objectively a better game, but doesn't have the charm of the original.
