It would be useful if it could make the light bounce so that you don't end up with those pitch black shadows that were so common back then.

Why have modern developers completely abandoned contrast, pitch black shadows and soulful lighting. And more importantly, why do they fucking LOVE fog in every scene?? I hate it so much, it saps the colour and life from everything.

they were more readable, for sure. Now all games with "pretty" graphics need markers everywhere to let the player now what's interactable and what's not.

I think it's more due to CRT back then having fast motion clarity and LCD's being slow with the blacks being purple/gray with the viewing angles.

Because they need it to hide the fact that their games look like shit. The fog helps make everything blend together so nothing sticks out or looks out of place.

I think it's edited or the jpeg compression and artifacting makes it worse, I've played most of those games and they are nowhere as bad.
Grated I've been using a big 4k OLED with HDR, but even when I used a worse IPS, I can't remember any of them looking as bad.

Proper RTX Remixes actually tweak the assets to work better with ray tracing, trying to use it as a magic "turn ray tracing on" button just gives you Wax Payne.

But in that scene it makes sense to have pitch black shadows, there are only two weak lights sources and the walls aren't supposed to be reflective. A better example of bad shadow volumes would be a sunny outdoors area where a perfectly sharp black shadow looks completely unnatural.
IIRC Far Cry 1 did a trick where in outdoor areas it uses shadow maps and indoors it uses shadow volumes, which is why it can sometimes look like Doom 3.

It was a limitation of the tech back then, if you think that was a stylistic choice you're dumber than what you appear. Shadows should be colored if the light source is also colored.

Doom 3 is another example of the pitch darkness which no one liked it back then, you couldn't see anything and always had to have the flashlight.
