This pack for retroarch is easily the best Ive seen: https://forums.libretro.com/t/cyberlab-death-to-pixels-shader-preset-packs/35606

You get very granular levels of customization so you can tweak it exactly to however you want. I really dont think its going to get any better than this, this is the final frontier of CRT shaders. Need to have an HDR capable display for it to work properly.

I've started using CRT-Lottes-Fast... "Mask: 3.00" and "Sharpness: 1.00" to get that CRT look I still remember... and I love how this looks and feels!

I decided to give it a go, and my laptop's running a bit hot, but then again it's old and I really have been negligent with cleaning the vent area on its side, and it probably was already running hot way before that, I need to pay more attention when I do something besides emulating, or when I use a different shader... anyways, thank you! I've given it a shot and it's exactly what I've been wanting!

I gave this one a shot too, overall I liked it, but to be honest CRT-Guest-Advances has so much that I can tinker with that I barely know what to do... I did my best to get it to look how I wanted to still, but to me it didn't look as close to what I wanted when compared to CRT-Lottes-Multipass-Glow. I do find this to be a good shader though, and I get why the options it gives makes it so appealing.

I don't see much of a point in going crazy with the shaders because as soon as you move at all the illusion that you're looking at a tube is broken.
Just a little bit to make the pixel art look a little less nearest neighbor or smearjob is all you need.

Though I look forward to a time when we have displays that are clocked fast enough they've effectively become low persistence displays regardless of underlying tech.

If that's all you want just use smuberstep or smootherstep which have been moved to the pixel-art-scaling folder recently. Makes pixel art not too sharp and eliminates shimmering and inconsistent pixel sizes if you're not using integer scaling or if what you're emulating doesn't have square pixels

I've tuned another preset based on my preferred guest venom that looks great for pre-rendered backgrounds. Now I favor this one over the ones I used for such cases (like Royale and other flavors of guest). If you've been following these threads you might remember the FF7 screencaps I've posted on them. This one is not as coarse as the others, it's mask/scanline heavy but not as much, so you get a cleaner image and don't have to move further back from the screen like royale usually needs. It makes the backgrounds look nicely rounded and crisp without pixelation, and it's quite versatile too, it looks great for traditional 2D and 3D as well. Perhaps I need to de-tune the glow/bloom settings a little bit but I don't mind them.

I have this absolutely potato laptop and I'm sort of concerned about shaders and how they make it run way hotter, so I decided to do some tests... I've turned on FPS count, turned off both video and audio synchronization and just kept using a bunch of different shaders, mostly ones with an effect to emulate a CRT's glow, I've been a lot of them during the last few months even, here it is:

GL: Default - 440

GL: CRT_Consumer - 235
GL: CRTGlow_Gauss - 150
GL: CRTGlow_Gauss_NTSC_3Phase - 95
GL: CRT_EasyMode_Halation - 170
GL: CRT_Hyllian_Glow - 135
GL: CRT_Interlaced_Halation - 165
GL: CRT_Lottes - 75
GL: CRT_Lottes_Fast - 240
GL: CRT_Lottes_Multipass - 160
GL: Smuberstep_Glow - 320

Vulkan: CRTGlow_Gauss - 150
Vulkan: CRT_Guest_Fast - 70
Vulkan: CRT_Guest_Fastest - 140
Vulkan: CRT_Lottes_Multipass_Glow - 110

I'm surprised at how low the FPS count was for a few of these which I thought were more light, I'll admit that I have no reason to guess that though, I just assumed out of nothing, I'm also happy that Smuberstep_Glow is so light, always liked it. I've played around with CRT_Consumer a bit and I've got to say, it's looking pretty close to what I like, and I'm getting a low laptop tempeature with it.

On the topic of shaders, does anyone else struggle with 'em from game to game? Like, I'll get it to look perfect after some tinkering, just how I want, and then when I try a different game it looks a bit worse, but still good, and then in another game it'll look awful or borderline unplayable.

I've messed around with "crt-consumer.glslp" for now and, I have to say, it's looking perfect to me, I was disappointed with how hot some shaders I liked made my old laptop get, others would look bad for its relatively small resolution, and after a lot of these tests I realized that, out of the ones I genuinely liked the look of, and that had glow, it was the lightest one, and my laptop isn't so hot.

I'll probably stay with this for a little while until I inevitably change things up again, I just tinker so much with stuff and it's hard to lose that habit, a lot of the times it's good though, as it improves.

Anyways, usually I like stuff that others don't do, but if by any chance anyone here actually likes it and wants me to post my parameters for this to look how it does, I'll post them in the future too.

Also, this is how Batman - The Video Game (NES) actually looks with my real current setup on the crt-consumer.glslp shader and the parameters I went for, I suppose it's a bit smeared, but it looks clear enough for me and in a way I feel it makes it more smooth as the hard pixels stand out less, it sort of increases the definition and resolution in a way, which is why I love CRTs and the shaders.

I wish I could use MDAPT or GDAPT at 50% opacity and then throw a CRT shader on to blend it the rest of the way. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any way to reduce a given shader's opacity unless the shader supplies the option itself, so MDAPT and GDAPT remain ugly.

I've decided to run more tests using this method to get a better grasp at shaders and how heavy it might be to run some of them, so the same setup here, I turned on the FPS count to use that as my basis, and then turned off both video and audio's synchronization, starting the test without any of the shaders, and then going one by one. I'm using the GL video driver and tested out all of the CRT shaders in the CRT folder for the .glslp shaders in RetroArch. I must stress that my laptop's old and weak at this point, but I still think this serves as a good comparison between shaders and weight.

I must say that I was surprised by a few of these, some that I though were light turned out to be a bit on the heavy side, and vice versa, with a lot of shaders that I never touched, thinking they were a bit too much for my old laptop too handle, are just as tough to run as the stuff I ran instead of it.

I don't know how accurate this actually is, but I've done my best and think that this is as close as we can get to a somewhat objective comparison, and I hope this can help out at least some of you here in this thread, might do the same for Vulkan and the .slang shaders folder in the future, we'll see.

Yeah, adding individual shaders instead of presets. Though RetroArch is REALLY bad at managing shaders if you're not using presets, so it's kind of a pain. It's like, "ah, finally, I have the perfect tweaks for Shader 1. I'll add Shader 2 now. Wtf all of my tweaks have been reset"

P.S. I turned on the FPS count and turned off all synchronizations, out of curiosity, and got such impressive surprise, the FPS count was stable in over 300 FPS and often 400 FPS, which is almost as much as having no shader, so CRT-Consumer is quite lightweight from what I can tell... so sweet.

Generally you want to prepend simple shaders to complex shaders, or append complex shaders to simple shaders. Doing the reverse tends to fuck up the image (just my general experience, don't take it as rule of law).

In an ideal world, you would modify/add subshaders as new passes, but like >>10617567 here says, it resets all the settings so that sucks. Basically, only use this option if you want to create a complex shader from zero.

I went ahead and did the same for all the .slang shaders with the Vulkan video drivers. I hope it can help making it more clear as to what shaders are more light and which are more heavy, once again all I did was turn on the FPS count and turn off both video and audio synchronizations, then played for a while and wrote down the FPS I got overall, this took some time, but it was worth it.

I get the feeling that .slang shaders with Vulkan are tough to run on lower end machines, at least from what I played, but they seem better overall, so they're worth it if you have better hardware.

If you've got a potato like me, I'd just stick to the GL driver and .glslp shaders, like CRT-Consumer, which ran a lot better for me under this setup, as it got me less FPS on Vulkan and it's .slang one.

I'm probably going to switch from CRT Consumer to CRT Easy Mode Halation at this point... while I know CRT Consumer runs better on my machine, at least in GL and .glslp, the latter is still the 2nd best in term of performance for me for all of the glow/halation/diffusion/bloom shaders, and I like the effect better in it actually, anyways I've been playing around and I'm quite happy with the look.

I know that the effect might be a bit too much, I don't think any of you needs this to be fair, but I use it because my potato laptop has poor battery life by now and I need to keep the screen so dim.

I want that feel of my childhood CRTs, of a glow on a dark room, with only the CRT on, but I need to keep my screen brightness low, so I shoot up the glow and brightness on my shader, it works.

I'm loving CRT Easy Mode Halation so far, having a really fun time just messing around with all its parameters and testing things. I decided that no scanlines, while fun to experiment with, isn't the look I truly want, so I went back and tried to give it a look closer to my older CRT Consumer preset (>>10622505) which I really liked, but with a nice glow effect, which I exaggerate on purpose too.

As I've mentioned before, I try to keep my laptop on lower screen brightness, so the effect needs a bit of a push for me to perceive it well, on a more lit screen it'll look too much, but for me it's good.

Also, I'm getting a stable 230 FPS on it when the video and audio synchronizations are off, it's less than CRT Consumer, which gives me 400 FPS, but still more than all other glow shaders I've used.

I'm loving the scanlines and mask, the glow, and the overall feel of brightness and definition for graphics that I'm getting... playing around with CRT Easy Mode Halation is a recommendation from me if you've never tried it, it's an excellent shader, and if you don't dig the glow, there's the regular CRT Easy Mode aswell. If anyone wants my preset, I'd be happy to post them here too.

>>10628691
I agree, though that's on purpose, I really like the bloom effect and it's something I want to be at least somewhat noticeable even when I look at it from afar, and to do that with low brightness I do exaggerate the effect a lot, I just like it I guess...

I also particularly like the halation effect as it's a way of somewhat blending pixels a bit more and getting a more rounded and smooth look, which I appreciate. I'd say this screenshot sums it up so well for me, the bloom is way too much, I agree, but on a dark screen, it looks just right for me, and everything looks quite smooth and round, which feels appropriate considering what this one's based on, more accurate to the source material in a way, especially in cutscenes really.

There are four Lottes' masks in all variations of guest's shaders. Even gdv-mini has them. However, I'm not gonna lie, I find pretty jarring that people are using those masks with sub-900p resolutions, when they are for 4k (or 1440p minimum). You can even individually see the phosphors. For a resolution that low, you may be better with no mask or perhaps a cgwg one. I don't know if even a Triniton mask can work properly (picrel is one at 1080p, it's good, but still doesn't blend perfectly).

>> No.10632818

Mask 1 is the unique horizontal slot-style mask that originated with Lottes, which is meant to work well at 1080p (though I don't much care for it tbqh). Mask 2 is a boring old Trinitron mask, the same as Mask 6 in fact. Masks 3 and 4 are supposed to be shadow masks, but indeed they're too coarse at 1080p, especially Mask 4. Much finer shadow masks can be achieved by taking Masks 5 or 10 and setting the Shadow Mask parameter to 1.

Phosphor layouts (shadow masks). They need a minimum resolution to be properly displayed. Below that, quality starts to degrade, and a low-enough resolution can make they look bad.

Scanlines and NTSC simulations do not suffer from that, though having a higher resolution helps them to scale better. Basically, if your shader does not attempt to recreate the phosphors, you're mostly unaffected regardless of your resolution.

>> No.10633294

No one denies they look better at 4K but the attitude of many is to scoff at people who use them for lower res screens. It's a stupid attitude imo. For anything, but masks? They sure do, even at lower resolutions. The masks themselves? They only bring down the quality. Practically all shaders which have masks let you disable them and enjoy all the other benefits they provide, so why not just do that? If, someday you get a higher resolution screen, then you enable the mask back. It's advice, not scoff. But you do you.

I could try, but I'm short on time this weekend and, from the little I played around with these shaders, some of them fail to load, and when they do it takes about 10 or 15 seconds and it makes me think RetroArch's crashing, I think my laptop can handle it, but it'd take a toll on it for sure as, again from the few I played around with, none got past 100 FPS, so I have no truly light shaders for my laptop to get a bit of rest inbetween the tougher ones, so I think it's probably best for me to not do it, but even if I wanted to it wouldn't be viable for a few days.

Still, the good thing about these tests is that the execution's pretty simple, just turn on the FPS as you turn off audio and video synchronizations, it should work fine, and then you can test all of the shaders that interest you, while skipping those you don't care all that much about, it's simple.

Anyways, if you'd still like me to do it, just hit me up on the next thread, I can try it next week if I have a bit more time, it's just this weekend that I won't have much of a breathing room sadly.

Indeed, my laptop is turning 10 years old later in this year, it has 4GB of RAM and 512GB storage, also a quad-core 2.4GHz processor, Intel i3 from 2014, if you were to get, for example. the most basic entrance level smartphone by Samsung, the Galaxy A05, you'd get the same RAM and a octa-core processor, my laptop's weaker than some of the most basic smartphones around by now.

Also, the vents are full of dust, I really need to open it up at some point just to clean it from top to bottom, or else it'll start to heat up way too much. I need to take much better care of it.

I like to run my PS1 games at 6x resolution 2k. Recently discovered reshade and am unsure how heavy a shader to use. Heavier shaders make the HUD elements on games look a lot better but kind of remove the point of rendering games at a higher resolution, though some earlier games have jagged low poly counts so its not that bad.

Consumer and hyllian look very good in their stock preset form, their problem is the lack of parameters. Hyllian is great, but falls flat in two points:
1. Can't be made brighter in a less destructive way, like some other shaders (guest, royale, easymode, zfast-crt, gdv-mini, geom-mini...);
2. Doesn't have a scanline cutoff option (hardcoded or customizable), so the picture looks strange when content outputs 480i.

None. Your entire setup is bad. Either pick up-res or pick shaders. Doing both works bad, unless it's 2x the resolution at most (thus mimicking 480i content). In your game, the only 3D elements are the fighters themselves, everything else is 2D. And the Tekken 2 models are designed well enough to display in original resolution. I recommend avoiding upresing and downsampling in this specific game. Upres only in full 3D games.

But anyway, this is just a matter of opinion after all. If it looks good to you then that's the final say, even if it's a real L O O K I N ' G O O D preset.

The mask is the phosphor of the CRT. Different CRTs had different types of masks. It's something you're not gonna notice much with shaders if you don't play at very high resolution and take a really close look to the screen.

Thing is, if you downsample 2D (adaptive mode), you trick the shader into thinking it's higher res content so the shader doesn't even work right. You end up with a blurry image for 2D graphics. It's mostly for people who don't use shaders and don't wanna look at a raw image, but at that point it's more efficient to use a bilinear filter.

If you choose 3D downsampling then the shader works fine and the 2D elements should be unaltered, so they should look "right", just with the 3D models smoothed. Take a look at this gif, the 2D backgrounds remain the same, just the models change.

Here's a fully 3D game using 3D downsample. It looks like shit without the shader, and the downsampling description warns you against using it with fully 3D options, recommending it instead for hybrid 2D/3D games like the ones using pre-rendered backgrounds. Shaders do improve the look of a downsampled 3D game (it's an absolute mess without it), but nonetheless downsampling heavily alters the feel of the graphics. As I said, I prefer my PSX games to look like the PSX and not the N64. Blockiness and jaggies are part of the charm.

Very insightful, thank you anon. But as I expected, it don't look bad at all, I too prefer the blockness, in fact I fucking hate how N64 looks (with has more to do with how they "art" the textures imo), but this definitely looks the better alternative compromise to upres, that the only logical application would be for the AA (which you might as well not use any shaders at all anymore), so this fixes the the aliasing but retains "look" (I mean, more than the bazillion res anyway), and definitely helps with the 2D/3D mixing. The shader is a must, yes
Again, thanks anon

Glow generally brightens the surroundings of bright pixels with a halo-like effect, see left, the "halo". Bloom simply increases brightness of bright pixels without halo, it's good to increase overall feeling of brightness without destroying the dark aspects of the picture, see middle. Halation is more complex and and gives a general "foggy", blurry, smeared vibe, like a badly calibrated CRT, so you gotta apply it in subtle amounts for a nice effect. see right for an exaggerated effect of it.

I know I go overboard, but it's because I keep my screen at low brightness so my old laptop's battery actually lasts for a bit, so I need to exaggerate to even see the effect, but yes, on higher brightness I'd definitely turn it down a bit, maybe in the future if I manage to replace my laptop.

Three slang shaders I like to use (I favor lighter ones). A little comparison to show the differences. As usual, I'm open to suggestions and criticism.

Before the thread sinks, disregard the easymode one. I'm stupid and used a test preset with the wrong gamma balance. Next thread, I'll make another comparison with this corrected. About gdv-mini, it's actually pretty good. It's impressive what people can do nowadays with such lightweight shaders. At least for my screen, they look better than heavier ones.

I've been trying it out for a few days and I really like it. It's my favorite alongside crt consumer, which I also feel is a bit underrated, though not as much as gdv-mini.
