I've started playing Bomberman II on NES for the 1st time, after only ever playing the SNES ones... so what am I in for, my fellow Bomberman /vr/os?

>> No.10632330

So what's the lore behind Bomberman? Is he a robot or a guy in a weird futuristic ninja suit carrying bombs?
Are there AUs? What's the continuity? Is the original Bomberman actually the last episode in the Bomberman saga, considering it ends with Bomberman revealing himself as Lode Runner? Is it really a Lode Runner prequel?

>> No.10632754

>>10632330
There isn't defined lore or continuity because the creators just threw their hands in the air and said "let the kids imagine whatever they want".
Quote from interview:
> To be honest, I never reveal where the bombs come from. I think that's the difference between Mario and Bomberman: Mario has an established fictional universe, but nothing in Bomberman is set in stone. I think I'm coming over to the notion of everyone fleshing out the universe with their own individual ideas; it's somewhat addicting... Going back to the antenna, I think kids are the only ones who can answer that question with authority. It might not even be an antenna, but a solar power cell (Bomberman's energy source).

He's supposed to be a robot with a TV screen (or monitor, in general) as a face. The way he looks that we're familiar with is actually chibi-ized "retcon" of what he originally looked like, as seen as on both the Japanese and US covers for NES (Famicom) Bomberman which is actually what the Bomberman: Act Zero reboot on Xbox 360 was referencing

Ironically, they made chibi-er versions of his classic, established look that we all know and love, such as on the mediocre Bomberman for DS.

However, the fact that he is (now) a robot is ALSO a retcon, since the original PC releases show that he is just a guy with a hat on (similar to the UK's edition called "Charlie and the Floaters).

A lot of the games' lore is probably in-gags playing off of previous lore established in the series.

Tl;dr: He's a cartoon character like Bugs Bunny and other Looney Tunes, so don't think too far into it. It's a gameplay/hype-focused series full of retcons, but there are some design artifacts that still exist in the series (regardless of what the current Bomberman game's backstory is).

Bomberman Quest (GBC), Bomberman Tournament (GBA), and Bomberman Generations (GCN) is basically a trilogy of games. Aka, "The Charabom Trilogy"

There are also spiritual sequels to those games: the anime-based Bomberman Jetters games (the GC one is based off of Generations' gameplay and the JP-exclusive GBA one is based off of Tournament's gameplay).

It’s all over the place. You could argue there was a bit of continuity in the games made between the early 90’s (starting with the 1990 Bomberman game) to the late 90’s (arguably ending with Hero), but very inconsistent. Bomberman himself switches between being a robot, alien, humanoid depending on the game/continuity, but most games, including the recent Super Bomberman R games have him confirmed as a robot. There are some AUs, like Bomberman Land, B-Daman Bakugaiden, or Jetters. There’s also Bombergirl, although that occasionally makes nods to the mainline games or even Jetters. None of those are canon to the mainline games. Even some of the mainline games are ambiguously canon like the IREM made arcade games or Atomic, like where do they go? You can also argue the 64 duology are their own canon.

Mario doesn't have consistent background either, does that make him a bad character?
Bomberman is sort of a Mario-esque character in terms of lore, you can freely give him any background and it works except that one time on Xbox

Hudson went a little bit of Sonic route during the days of Jetters sub-series but I'm glad they didn't make ol' White an edgy talkative teen.

I don't. There was enough variety over the years and not so much bullshit to taint good memories of the franchise. I've had lots of fun with some spin-offs like Land! Touch, weird how nobody tried to copy that "micro-game amusement park metroidvania" setting, even Nintendo doesn't do that.

This is kinda present in Super Bomberman R, you can blow up pieces of terrain to lower it down and trap enemies (or yourself). But yeah, that should've been a thing much earlier on.

I haven't played them all, there's a lot of curiosities that are fun to talk about but honestly? I wouldn't personally recommend them in a "go play this one" kind of way.
Excluding the Super series since you already mentioned them, the ones that still I remember fondly are:

>2D
Bomberman 94'
Saturn Bomberman

>3D
Bomberman 64
Second Attack
Fantasy Race (kino if you can survive the rough start)
Bomberman Hero

That's in terms of singleplayer mode, there's a bunch of other games I think have a neat Battle Mode (including the extremely underrated second Jetters game on the GBA, JP-only of course).
I also would recommend the Jetters anime itself but that may depend on taste.

Bomberman 64 and Atomic Bomberman had insanely fast multiplayer if you have friends, my favorites. I had lots of 6 player Atomic Bomberman matches in college, even then it was already an old game but I got my friends addicted.
Bomberman Hero was a great single player campaign. It did make me uneasy though, even as a kid in the 90's, I don't know why. Not trying to start a new meme here but the music and visuals make me unconfortable for some reason. Am I the only one?
