>Where to buy
Aliexpress, gogamegeek, litnxt, keepretro, mechdiy

>What to know about brands
Retroid: Well built, powerful, but expensive (100$+)
Anbernic: Balance between price, power and build quality. Many available products
Powkiddy: Cheap, low quality builds, interesting shapes (square, clamshell, big screen)
Miyoo: One hit wonder
Game Console: Copycat popular products with low prices

>How do I get games
Google: cdromance, tiny best set

>What do I buy
Post your preferences: Money (20$ - 200$), Shape (horizontal, vertical, clamshell, square), Pocketable or not, OS (Linux, Android, Both), Systems (Pre PSX, PSX with extras, 5th gen + Dreamcast plus some PS2/GC, PS2/GC capable)

>Recommended devices
Prices depend on when and where you buy.
- Retroid Pocket 4 (SOON)
- Retroid Pocket 3+ (150$, horizontal, 4.7" 16:9 Screen, can play some PS2/GC, android)
- Anbernic RG405M (150$, horizontal, 4" 4:3 Screen, can play some PS2/GC, android)
- Retroid Pocket 2S (100$, horizontal, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, can play some PS2/GC, android, pocketable)

- R36S (40$, vertical, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, up to PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)

>Things I need to know
- Handhelds come with low quality SD cards. Throw them away and buy new ones.
- It takes some tinkering, specially linux devices.
- Overall quality of these products is very cheap.
- Reviewers get free handhelds, caveat emptor.

I bought an odin 2, and so I'm sorry to say it, but I'm leaving you. I can now actually enjoy playing games instead of just shitposting about handhelds all day. I'll miss you all. Except the Analogue Pocket owners, because they're gay.

The RG505 could have been great instead of just okay. They always cut a corner or make a design choice that keeps them from making a truly killer handheld. I play with it a few times a week, and using GrapheneOS helps a lot for battery life and performance. They would be more popular if Chinese people cared to tweak Android better. They would be completely worthless without reddit and archive carrying them.

How is the RK3566 chip an utter Nigger chip, anyway? Its no Snapdragon nor even a T618, I know that. It is still better than glob top glued Famicom clone carts, most Z80 clone chips from the former USSR, Eastern bloc Czechoslovakia, Poland, Yugoslavia and Brazil, and early Blackberry CPUs from the 2000s; still not saying all that much, though. The way I see it, the biggest problem is over-saturation of it these days. Indeed, time to move on somehow.

so theres a lot of misconception and hate for the sf2000 for some reason, so i thought id clear it up...

It does gb, gbc, nes and md\sms perfectly. snes is almost perfect and only slows down when theres a heap of shit on the screen (similar to the actual console). gba is pretty fucking dogshit though...things like mario advanced and all the dkc ports are unplayably slow (but things like pokemon and sim city 2k work fine). the "modified firmware" adds a heap of other retro systems which all work near perfectly (pc engine, segaCD, gamegear, atari, c64, etc). the few mame games i have tried also seem to work perfectly (not a big fan of mame).

for reference, i have 100% dkc 2 and megaman x2 on it (mmx2 was basically flawless with 4 small graphical glitches in the whole game, which is down to the emulator, and dkc2 had slight slowdowns when there were a heap of sprites onscreen, which is the same as on a real console).

if all you want to do is play pre-ps1 consoles, then this is perfect. dont listen to the trannies that say to spend another $50 and get something that does the same but with partial ps1 support (unless u actually want to play ps1)

>$100 just for “up to PS1”
The RG35XX can do all of that for less than $40 on sale, AND it has better controls, better software, and a better screen. Sure, being able to play 70% of that library for half the price is theoretically more “performance-per-dollar”, but I feel like human beings have a certain bare minimum when it comes to retro emulation. After all, would you rather have a burger for $5, or just the bun for $1?

90% of “retro gamers” don’t give a shit about NES and GB; the graphics are old, and the libraries full of shovelware. SNES and GBA are what modern retro gamers look for, since it’s what most modern pixel art indie games draw inspiration from. If you give them a $15 brick that plays those systems at half speed with crackling audio; they’re not gonna think “maybe I should buy something at a higher price point”. They’re gonna think “I guess old games were shit after all. Welp, time to go back to Palworld!”

No need for the snarky jackassism because you don't understand the basic bitch first steps of emulation, such as your hardware needing to be able to run BOTH the emulator and the OS that the emulator is running off of, holy fuck you twit.

AND IT FUCKING ROLLS ON A BALL INTO A FACE BUTTON WITH A SWITCH.

The ONLY excuse I can fathom is that because in modern times it's so systematic for a new parent to just give their infantile child a tablet or smart phone that Fisher Price-tier toys need to go to radical new extremes in terms of design and quality just to justify to a lazy parent their handheld is worthwhile even though the kid already has a tablet/smart phone.
Regardless, this is actually deeply upsetting as it has made me realize how fucking lazy and innovative EVERYONE at Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo are.
Feels so weird to write as they were all originally Microsoft Game Studios, Sony Computer Entertainment, and Nintendo but around the the time of the 360 and PS3 releasing alongside the tv series The Apprentice, Donald Trump continuously conflating the development studio at Sony and the product name "Playstation" they literally changed themselves to be called "PlayStation Studios". Literally because Trump kept calling SCEA, "PlayStation". Fucking aaauuugh

it runs ps2 and gc and anything prior fairly well, but youre gonna have trash battery life and a loud ass fan going off while you play
not every ps2 game runs perfectly and you have to tinker with settings a bit, but a lot of it comes from the emulator being dog shit and now unsupported so dont expect it to get better either
the display sucks and has ghosting and goes green until the system boots and forcefully corrects it

>What is the “money is no object” end-game retro handheld device?

There's no such thing, it doesn't exist. For some it's OLED Steam Deck or ROG Ally for their sheer power, but tons of people would rather have something like a 405M or a Retroid 2S for portability. Some would say it's the Analogue for it's ability to use real carts and high quality screen. And hell, some would probably even prefer an RG35XX for how easy and convenient it is for 2D gaming.

At the end of the day you can't rely on the internet to tell you what you want, gotta decide that for yourself.

It's a fun little project.
There's some smart foolproof design to it. Like little plastic tabs will prevent you from putting things in backwards. Plugging in the connectors for the speaker, battery and screen were probably the hardest part.

Can't be overstated, really gorgeous even though they all suffer from minor light bleed at the bottom.

Weird top vents for the speaker that slightly smother the sound, little weird initially but not bad. Probably the best audio out of my chinkhelds after the RP2S, though I hear faint interference (wifi?).

Cheap plastic, but feels good to touch. Heard others complain about easy scratches.

I'd recommend it on discount prices for those well familiar with RK3566's flaws and weak performance, who know it's a gimmick chinkheld and understand they're going through powkiddy's QA lottery.

PCE is 16:15.

x86k has Castlevania as 1:1.
Wonderswan with the screen orientation switch gimmick.
Enough for TATE to look good.
Some ports run at 1:1 like GTA:VC, Blood, SM64.
Integer 3x scale with GBA.

sharp-shimmerless fixes non-integer scaling and 4:3 looks okay too, so much so it got me to neglect the several times stronger, better built, quality d-pad having RP2S for a while. It's a fine side chinkheld, assuming RK3566 is enough for what you want to run (seems to fall apart in non-basic bitch arcade boards) and you buy it discounted (think it was $60?). umm no sweaty. Aside from GBA (which he listed for 3x integer scale and is still no smaller than on a typical 3.5" 4:3), everything he listed that is wider than tall still uses more screen space on a 1:1 than a 4:3. Trimui make very few devices compared to the shotgun approach of most others. Like there are dozens of powkiddy devices with small followings that add up into a lot of powkiddy users, but trimui only has like one device really that has any kind of serious userbase, the smart pro. Other other two were more novelties than anything else.
Anyway, as a TSP owner, I can easily recommend it for anything up to n64/nds, and some psp and dreamcast as a bonus. The triggers are crap but few devices this thing emulates need them, and they're apparently getting updated in a new version of it, and I didn't like the sticks at first but I've gotten used to them.
Software updates are a pain in the ass to do and the sdk they released was crap so jelos team said they're not gonna bother with it. Now on their github it does say that it's the first release of the sdk, so maybe they'll post a better one in the future, but that's just speculation at this point. I have the 35XXH and it runs sonic adventure 1 and 2 pretty well. I haven't noticed any real problems once I fiddled with the settings

Haven't really tried much N64 but mario kart runs well on it. Not sure if it can do Smash Bros and I hear Mario 64 has a few problems.

If all you want from the dreamcast is SA1 and 2 you should be fine. Can't ask for more for 70 bucks or whatever it is and it might get even better once cutom firmware catches up.

What is the big difference between the RG35XXH and the RG35XX Plus besides name and the obvious differences in the former being horizontal vs the latter of them being vertical?

>> No.10643751

>>10643747
the horizontal one has sticks, and I think that the SoC it uses is different.

Horizontal uses the old d-pad because Brother Zhou thought it would be funny.

It is an improvement albeit a small one. I hardly use them, and when I do it doesn't feel that uncomfortable. But the real issue is that, due to the size of the triggers plus the distance between the top and the bottom of the console, it is very hard to rest two fingers on them, there is not enough surface. The also fixed the orientation of the speakers, but I did the same with my unit anyway. With these issues fixed at that price, it is hard to justify other consoles like the rg35xx.
