What the fuck were they thinking with 64 rainbow road? This is such a slog to play through. Easily the worst mario kart track.

i always liked it because if you do a hop at the exact right time when going down the first big hill, you'll fly through the air for a bit.

I don't mean to defend bad design, but I think Rainbow Road is meant to be a massive pain in the ass. It's the final track. Plus MK 64 has much worse tracks. The snow one is absolutely fucking egregious. Nintendo clearly spent one weekend on that piece of shit.

They can definitely fuck you up, but only rarely if you actually know how to play. Beginners get btfo by them.

I prefer the longer tracks and I wish they wouldn’t have made them shorter in later games where every race is over in less than 2 minutes. The longer tracks really make each race feel like an event.
Also, 64’s Rainbow Road is not only the best track in the game, but one of the best in the entire series.

It was great at the time because of the novelty of 3d. It really isn't: all the characters are sprites and. Best tracks are Wario Stadium and Bowser's Castle. 4 player multiplayer sucks because they have to switch off the music as a compromise and all you hear is 4 buzzing karts. It's fun, but I like Double Dash and the DS one better.

only retarded kids and fat people did that

true chads pulled the hop off angled to the left perfectly to fly over to the other side and skip half the lap.

>> No.10634754

All they had to do was to remove the rail on a few parts for a bit of challenge.
Driving along this long ass completely flat track without any danger aside the occasional chain chomp is a bit unenthusing compared to other tracks. Some parts where you can fall down would have helped with this

>> No.10635454

I suspect it was. There's probably less detail on the tracks in 4-player mode as well. Diddy Kong Racing and Snowboard Kids managed to keep the music on during 4 player mode, so Nintendo sucks at programming for their own console, basically.

AI will cheat and always be on your ass regardless what you throw at them, and if you fall behind too much for some reason it becomes impossible to recover for that race.

I love Mario Kart 64 but understand that this is pure nostalgia on my part, going back to it won't be that great

>> No.10637271

>>10636621
Rubberbanding sucks. Most satisfying thing was using a lightning powerrub or some red shells on your direct opponent right before the big jump in Wario stadium. They'd falll in it and it would put them half a lap behind and lose them some points if you could do it in the final lap and finish quickly.

>> No.10637978

>> No.10638435

Yes, unlike every other console before and since the N64 doesn't actually have dedicated sound hardware, so turning off the music leaves more CPU for game logic.
