GBA SP and OG DS are really the only /vr/ examples. The series X controller has an amazing dpad if you can get over the asymmetrical layout. The Retroid handheld also have top-tier dpads and it baffles me that almost all the other chinkhelds use rubber domes.

In my experience I found the satellite dish on the elite controllers the most pleasant for fighting games and such. Can just roll your finger over and it gets far less sore, and swap it out when needed.
Unfortunately the elite controllers have dogshit paddles and other issues which make them not worth it in comparison to other controllers, but this thread is about dpads.

There's a few different variants that feel very different
Other than the regular Sega dpad you'd see on a Saturn pad or a 6-button Genesis pad, there's also a couple different 3-button Genesis dpads
The most notable is the reverse dpad on most 3-button controllers where the contact pads are mounted ass backwards on the wrong side

I like the SNES classic controller, basically a 1:1 SNES pad but not 30 years old and a used by retarded kids. The Xbox Series one is solid, as was the Xbox One, basically the same shit with a different shape. Nintendo Switch Pro Controller dpad is absolute ass, and the switch’s “button” dpads are a joke. The Hori Switch dpad joycon has a decent dpad, though a bit too stiff to press, but made me realize how awful and uncomfortable the switch is with an asymmetrical dpad anyway. Speaking of handhelds, the new 3DS XL has a good one, also in an unfortunate position but imo not nearly as bad as the Switch. Original 3DS dpad was tiny and squeaked on my unit. DSi XL is peak handheld dpad, best of the DS line, DSi dpad and buttons were too mushy, PG DS also decent. Thanks for coming to my TED talk

The way this baby just clicks into all eight direction with practically no travel makes it perfect for precision-based left/right/up/down inputs in puzzle and rhythm games, flawless directional executions for shooters and fighters, and is viable enough to be used for pseudo-analog control for 3D game like for the DS and PS1 which are designed for a d-pad. Even with SM64 DS's ahead-of-its-time touch screen controls, the original phat DS's d-pad is still infinitely superior.

It's similar to the phat DS d-pad in how it functions, but overall the Xbone controller d-pad is just a weaker version of the Hori d-pad, specifically thew Pokken Tournament Hori d-pad. But the Xbone d-pad is close enough to it.

The Sony SCPH-1080 (not the SCPH-1200) has the most versatile d-pad in existance. I can execute a lot of horizontal-based movements more times consecutively on this d-pad than I could on others.

The Logitech F310 has my favorite second d-pad. Mainly because it feels great for fighting games with a lot of dialing. If I had to play fighting games on a controller, I'd use this d-pad because pretzels are easier on this than they are on the SCPH-1080.

Lastly, Razer Raion simply has a nice modern circle d-pad, but it's a little too wide and feels flat with minimal tactile feedback but it outperforms other wider circle d-pads.

I love how they're the only ones currently with a SEGA styled D-Pad, it's just a shame that being a controller with asymmetrical analog sticks stops me from truly enjoying it for 2D, and enjoying its D-Pad to its fullest. P.S. Mega Drive/Genesis (6-Buttons) is still king of all controllers, at least for 2D video games, I love how it feels in the hands, and the buttons.

This is probably my favorite pad I've ever used, it's like the official Saturn pad but just feels nicer to hold and I like the flatter, larger buttons compared to the official pad's smaller, rounded top buttons.

I'm pissed that one of the shoulder buttons stopped working after just a month or two of usage. Feels like those are always the first thing to go on Saturn pads in general.

I can only think of two N64 games that I used the d-pad for. One being Resident Evil 2, which I used exclusively. Thew d-pad always felt fine to me. The big N64 grips made it nice to use.
