CRT Thread
I managed to get my hands on a JVC TM-2100E for cheap. While the tube is in a great condition I have never had this much trouble setting up geometry, linearity in particular is bad there's no service menu I gotta do it on the board. There's a service manual online but, the manual seems to be missing half the capacitors that are on the board.
Anyone here ever dealt with these? Information seems to be pretty scarce, is there a US version of this monitor? As I assume the E stands for Europe.

One thing you could try is a yoke research which can help linearity. Or find a service manual and add the missing component/trimpots yourself. It should work it is just voltages going to various ic's and circuits.

I hope it's this , when I try to increase v-size it doesn't even get close to fully expanded, it's like it stops scanning the upper image.
V-size-2 currently doesn't do shit.
H-size coil seems to be stuck or something, it doesn't budge despite having the proper tools.
When adjusting V-linearity now and then it goes ballistic and completely loses sync.
Piece of crap service manual is incomplete and doesn't contain a full capacitor list, so I have to fully dissasemble the whole unit and write it down first before ordering.

What a pain

There's lots of little tricks you can try to improve the geometry including placing magnets near the yoke, yoke adjustments and even making sure convergence is dialed in tight, often there are extra pots on the neckboard. Also see if you can improve anything with the east-west geometry circuit in the service menu. As well as making sure the rgb drives are calibrated nicely along with brightness levels.

That's what I guessed, unless it has enough adjustment for focus to gain some distance, but I guess I could DIY some lens assembly for focusing.

Would be a cool project, CRT projectors are impossible to find or expensive, meanwhile projector TVs are given away free all the time.

I don't know how much you know, but from my experience the last few years since getting my first CRT since I was a kid is that flat panels are only ever going to be so good. Both of mine are flat, and the corners are just atrocious with test patterns. It's less noticeable in games, especially 3D, but it's definitely there. I just try to tune it out, so the more fun the game, the better the geometry.
I don't understand what the perceived advantage of a flat screen was. I saw some source mention viewing angles? That seems kind of dumb to me.

>> No.10620990

>>10620958
As far as I know, flat panels are a crazy idea. I am not even sure the viewing angle argument holds up except maybe they make the screen look more futuristic or something? Flat panels work by projecting on to a rounded internal screen that is covered with glass at the front until it flattens out. Obviously depending on manufacturing quality this can introduce a plethora of distortions by itself. You then get a secondary east west correction circuit that adjusts the beam into a shape that looks relatively good on a flat screen, failure of this circuit and you just get a round blob of image in the corner of the screen. The exception would be LG who made truly flat front tubes and even they still have flaws. Not to mention the weight of the yoke is much heavier to account for this digital correction so you get a lot of yoke sag and bendy screens.

You could if you use extra hardware like linedoublers or emulate (or have a multiscan monitor that accepts both 15kHz RGB and 31KHz+ RGB), but generally having a CRT TV and a separate VGA monitor is better. On a different note, I think you guys here would be surprised by the amount of TVs/Monitors s, of all shapes and sizes, are just lying around in TV stations and Studios collecting dust

They don't put in modern normal projectors. They usually put in esports or gaming quality projectors. Basically very high end stuff that can fit inside the cabinet.

Be careful with air purifiers that emit ozone. They really shouldn't be in the same room with anything you wish to preserve or people for that matter. Ozone accelerates the degradation of plastics and paper, harms the lungs, and not only does little to actually remove pollutants from the air but it can create additional pollutants when it reacts with certain VOCs.

Hi CRT general.

I'm searching for information on Chinese made CRT tubes. Someone told me that the Chinese still make brand new tubes? Is this true? Has anyone tried them and where can I order it?

I have several arcade cabinets with old bad monitors. I bought some new (old) stock K7000 monitors that had been sitting in a storage warehouse unused for years. I replaced the caps just to be sure. They worked fine for a few hours/days. Looks amazing, but then they started smoking and eventually shut off. All 3 of them broke within a few weeks. All started smoking out of nowhere and shut off. All of them in different cabinets.

I decided that these monitors are just too old to handle being run anymore. I need some new monitors. I don't want to put in an LCD, but I'm running out of options.

if not open mvs sells kits you can use as a makeshift gun
then use a pc laptop style psu

i love having the AES but it is much more expensive for carts
there are adapters that let you use mvs carts on aes but theyre so comically expensive you might as well just hoard redundant mvs-1c boards instead

not needed
flat panel = gaming monitor, upscaler gun and game (you can use a cheap hyperkin genesis hdmi as the rgb/hmdi for $30)

I actually got zapped pretty damn hard from a CRT. I had one unplugged for 2 weeks. I opened it up to repair work, and when my finger got near the PCB it zapped my hand. You could see the electricity zap my hand. It knocked me to the floor. It hurt like hell and felt like I got hit with a taser.

Thankfully I had the thing unplugged for 2 weeks. So I doubt it had a full charge. They aren't joking when they say CRTs can kill you. Who knows what would have happened with a fully charged CRT. Don't mess with CRTs unless you know what ur doing.

it takes slightly less than one amp of electricity to stop a human heart permanently
so if you touch something with a LOT of current with your hand on accident
you could injure yourself, damage equipment, or both
or death i guess but you would have to be alone and accidentally grab onto something within the chassis
electricity causes the muscles to contract so you wouldn't be able to let go (electric chair example)

consumer CRT are dangerous because they can hold high ampere and voltage even unplugged sometimes for up to a couple weeks

You need to leave America or mainland Europe. CRTs are gone in the rest of the world. And it's too expensive to ship replacements to my country. Not worth the cost.

I found an old school Pac Man in the basement of my neighbor who gave it to me for free if I took it away. The tube was necked and busted. There is an essential distinction between arcade monitor and arcade machine you're apparently too dimwitted to understand here. An arcade monitor need not have an accompanying cabinet.
It's a display device to play arcade games, which can be delivered in the form of a supergun, emulation, FPGA, or console/PC port.
When I'm playing an arcade game on a component television it is being used as an arcade monitor.

>This adopted the slotted shadow mask and in-line electron gun pioneered by the 1966 GE Porta-Color and used by most then-current television tubes to computer monitor use.

>The Porta-Color set introduced a new variation of the shadow mask display tube. It had the electron guns arranged in an in-line configuration, rather than RCA's delta arrangement.
> By the early 1970s most companies had introduced the "slot-mask" designs, including RCA.

This, that's the most standard use of those types
Shadow mask - computers, mostly PC and older TVs
Slot mask - TV's and older computer monitors
Aperture grille - TVs and computer/PC monitors
Plus there's PVMs with any of those types

Slot mask gives a nicer overall picture but shadow mask was used with computers because font rendering, for which it was better, hence why older computer monitors were often slot mask too

Just bought this 27" D-Series off Facebook today. Geometry is kinda fucked in the top left corner and I think the previous owner fucked the colors in the service menu, is there any way to factory reset?

>> No.10644106

>>10644061
Try some magnets on the tube to correct geometry. Also try find a service manual that might have sane defaults for resetting as often factory reset is non existent.

>> No.10644119

>>10644061
you don't wanna factory reset shit. That will make it worse almost always. it's hard to tell what the problem is from that pic alone. You can change the intensity of the colors with the R, G, and B cut/drive settings. Just put up a test pattern and experiment. There's like a dozen weirdly named settings that have subtle affects on the color too.

What arcade cab uses an 800TVL tube? Are you sure those aren't bullshit marketing numbers? JVC would do that for their D-Series, claiming 800 when it was more like 500.

>>10644565
It might even be worse than that because arcade monitors didn't have the same quality assurance as consumer sets. A lot of times tubes that didn't pass the checks for televisions were sold as arcade tubes. Now this rarely meant anything meaningful to the end user, and they still looked great because they were typically hooked up via RGB but it's something to consider. Plus finding an arcade monitor today that doesn't have a billion hours on it is like trying to catch a leprechaun riding a unicorn.

if it comes with the remote, try not to smush the buttons too hard, they liked to get stuck inside.
