Retro handhelds spreadsheet https://pastebin.com/ZyqXr19r (embed)
SoC Comparison https://versus.com/en/mobile-chipset

>Where to buy
Aliexpress, gogamegeek, litnxt, keepretro, mechdiy

>What to know about brands
Retroid: Well built, powerful, but expensive (100$+)
Anbernic: Balance between price, power and build quality. Many available products
Powkiddy: Cheap, low quality builds, interesting shapes (square, clamshell, big screen)
Miyoo: One hit wonder
Game Console: Copycat popular products with low prices

>How do I get games
Google: cdromance, tiny best set

>What do I buy
Post your preferences: Money (20$ - 200$), Shape (horizontal, vertical, clamshell, square), Pocketable or not, OS (Linux, Android, Both), Systems (Pre PSX, PSX with extras, 5th gen + Dreamcast plus some PS2/GC, PS2/GC capable)

>Recommended devices
Prices depend on when and where you buy.
- Retroid Pocket 4 (SOON)
- Retroid Pocket 3+ (150$, horizontal, 4.7" 16:9 Screen, can play some PS2/GC, android)
- Anbernic RG405M (150$, horizontal, 4" 4:3 Screen, can play some PS2/GC, android)
- Retroid Pocket 2S (100$, horizontal, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, can play some PS2/GC, android, pocketable)
- Powkiddy x55 (90$, horizontal, 5.5" 16:9 Screen, PSX with extras, linux)
- Powkiddy RGB30 (90$, horizontal, 4" 1:1 Screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)
- Trimui Smart Pro (60$, horizontal, 5" 16:9 Screen, PSX with extras, linux)
- Anbernic RG 35XX Plus (60$, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)

- R36S (40$, vertical, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, up to PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)

>Things I need to know
- Handhelds come with low quality SD cards. Throw them away and buy new ones.
- It takes some tinkering, specially linux devices.
- Overall quality of these products is very cheap.
- Reviewers get free handhelds, caveat emptor.

Ok, so I ordered the chinkplay fpga GBC. Going to have fun with it. My original GBC (modded with an IPS) is with my kid now. And yes, I know about the shortcomings. I just want something to put all my carts into and just play without having to fiddle and fumble with a launcher like my rp3+. And fuck analogue for their prices, no matter how good the screen is.

I never knew about this anon, that's pretty cool especially for the price. Wish something like this existed for consoles as well

>> No.10615875

>>10615868
Be warned.
The clock speed is SLIGHTLY faster or lower depending on setting, never the exact same as an original GBC.
It shits itself with some flashcarts, but it’s a matter of luck, some work, some don’t.
Cable Link works, but sometimes gives graphical glitches (solved as soon as you disconnect the cable).
Charges slowly.
You might need to select the GB or GBC core depending on the game, or it might give you wonky colour palette options.
Some of these might get addressed in future firmware updates, but don’t get your hopes up.
That’s it, I think.

got a rg35xx+. gave my old rg35xx away as a gift over the holidays, but thats starting to feel like a mistake. this thing needs cfw so badly. muos is dogshit & none of the other stuff works at all. i wanted to use it for psx, but the stock emulator had like 2 seconds of audio delay and it lags to shit on muos.
also, super disappointed in what im seeing in rp4pro reviews. so close to my dream device, but i had a delta fan in my steam deck and theres no way im going back to absurd noise levels on an even smaller device. is the regular model silent?
>>10616138
8:7 on the analogue pocket is unbeatable. the best snes experience of any device ever. i dont think i can use any other device for snes ever again.
4:3 is just purely promoted because
people have nostalgia for the distortion. like 95% of snes games were clearly made for 8:7, and that aspect ratio is only going to look good on a square screen.
maybe that new rgb30 device would be nice but i already have my pocket and im not going to be tricked into buying a powkitty device.

You won't find them because that would be expensive. However more often than not these reviewers don't receive the handhelds directly from the manufacturers, but from shops. However, because they get early previews you can assume they won't be too harsh on them not to get mad their overlords.

Yet you may find some individuals who own a couple of handhelds and posts their impressions. But for that there is not a single dedicated channel.

I make no choice because era-specific displays made little distinction between "proper aspect ratio" and the picture could be displayed across a wide gradient of styles and contortions, not to mention the ability of the user to make individual analog adjustments. Furthermore I find anyone that fixates on this dichotomy to typically be a rather useless, dull person, obsessed with some meaningless sense of "correctness" that betrays a certain trend towards authoritarianism, adherence to consensus, and the need to signal their personal virtue for the same. Such r-selected behavior earns little of my respect.

Because anyone who does that wants views, and to get views you need to be one of the firsts to review them, which means getting access to dev units, which means being in good terms with either manufacturers or some shop. Otherwise you always come late to the party, and I assume a person willing to spend that much money on handhelds to review them wouldn’t like. Just about the vast majority of reviews you see on YouTube are directly sent by some shop. That’s what they advertise actually, acquiring the item at some online retailer.

Fellow handheld gaming niggas, I already have dsixl (amazing screen) for ds and gba library, but I was thinking of getting a used psp for ps1/psp library and maybe better snes/gba emulation. Should I get psp (preferably 3000) or ps vita? Is it worth it? I don't want it to be too big or stick out due to thumbsticks in vita, but maybe more games will be worth it

Something horizontal and with stacked shoulder buttons, but not too small (see >>10620181). The cheapest stuff is limited to PCSX Rearmed which is on the low end of emulation but gets you by, plenty of power for 480p. If you're used to sticks on bottom I'd recommend Pocket 2S (cheapest one), which granted is overkill for PS1 but nets you the best d-pad and sticks for chinkhelds AFAIK. Some complain the brick format is not comfortable and require a grip, but works on my hands™. The case is cool if you need it, pretty good quality despite the tacky look, doesn't ship smelling like death like others.

GBA simply is unplayable.
GB/GBC runs fine.

Too bad because I wanted something to play SNES, and the form factor is simply perfect.

Either they release some new firmware, but it seems like they don't really want amateur programmers to go around it,

So, for now, it is still my phone + phone support and BT joypad.

There's a custom firmware that fixes some issues with the device, also you should be able to run most Genesis games just fine. SNES is down to what chip the game requires so Mario or DKC should be fine but you may have trouble with something like Yoshi's Island, but you can always just emulate the GBA version instead. Hmm, that's not a bad argument, the reason I got a dsi xl(and considered ds lite/ds phat/dsi too) instead of 3ds is that the 3ds library didn't really seem attractive to me and original ds and gba games which I wanted the most just look better on the OG family and feel washed out on 3ds. If it's the same with psp and vita then I'm inclined to get psp2k/3k
>it has by far the worst handheld library ever,
Still didn't look into that, I seen some nice indie games I liked on PC ported to vita, like spelunky HD, hotline miami and even terraria and minecraft - though these may be really subpar compared to the PC experience
>The only good thing about it is the second stick
It probably is much better than the nub, and maybe even good for ps1 games with DS support, but I'm a bit off put by the form factor and portability of vita because of it - it's bigger than og psp models and the analogs seem to stick out - maybe it's not a problem in reality but on photos I feel old psp is more aesthetic to me

these pretty much true from personal experience. 3d gba games dont run well at all, and i mean unplayable no matter the frameskip. snes runs surprisingly well... except for mode 7 games. it's funny because back in the day people who wanted to play yoshi's island would just play gba demake instead, because that ran, but original snes didnt

My gripe with the rp4 pro is that every retard is creaming themselves to the think of being able to play ps2 games when is really not a good machine for it. 4.7" 16:9 is too small for default 4:3 ps2: not only the fonts are smaller than previous consoles, but on top of the screen being on the small size you get black bars on the side.
That and the stick at the bottom which makes long sessions unplayable (well, not like the battery will hold anyway)

The 556 seems a better machine for ps2, but it is underpowered and probably expensive, so we will have to wait for now

Some of us want both PS2 and pocketability and are willing to take the smaller screen for it. And again, the font complaint is retarded because the PS2 went up to 480p max. Font being hard to read didn't become an issue until the next gen with the upscale in resolutions.

>4.7" 16:9 is too small for default 4:3 ps2: not only the fonts are smaller than previous consoles
Pretty much all pre-HD consoles have stupidly readable text, odds are the letters will be bigger for PS2 games on the RP4 than any Switch game's text is.
>you get black bars on the side
A lot of PS2 games have widescreen modes in their settings, and even if they didn't, widescreen patches are more often than not decent. Even if only half of the library has good widescreen, I'd rather have that half available and deal with black bars on the rest.
>that and the stick at the bottom which makes long sessions unplayable

I've got one. It handles ps1 with ease, does really well with n64 and nds as well. If you're willing to forgive some occasionally choppy performance it's ok at dreamcast, and it can run some psp games really well, and some other really poorly.
The triggers are shit which everyone knows at this point, but you don't really use them much due to the selection of systems. The bumpers are good.
The sticks took some getting used to because they're quite small and with little travel, but they do a good enough job. The dpad and face buttons are good.
The software is serviceable, the sleep function does an amazingly good job at retaining battery life, especially if you exit out to the menu beforehand. Updating the firmware has been a pain in the ass every time I've done it however. It's got some custom firmware being worked on, although sadly the most promising one, jelos, probably isn't going to happen because the sdk has a ton of binary blobs and the devs don't want to work with it.

So play PC games on it? Dock it and use it as a desktop? Have access to tons of games that aren't even on the Switch? Use it as a tablet PC?
You act like you'd use it exclusively for Switch emulation. Anyway, the point is that the Switch isn't "1/3rd" the price of the Deck. Stop being retarded.

It's less graphics pretty and more holy fuck my 3rd party games are not broken ports and I can play them all. No nuPiracy fuckery where you need a launch window model stuck on year one firmware just to own your handheld either.

Pretty sure he's coming at this at the angle of people telling him he should have just bought a Steam Deck instead of a Switch. And you're both right. It's annoying as fuck watching people wave the Steam Deck around as if it's only function is to just be the fanciest portable emulator.

Using daijisho. Is there a way for it to detect a new game without resyncing the whole platform? I just wanted to add 1 game and now it takes a few minutes to scan through 1000+ games just to add that one to the list.

Fine, technically, twenty years ago, it was an adequate way to play SNES games. But even back then gba flash carts were a thing and were significantly cheaper than PSP, which cost nearly $200 back when it launched.

The real question is why are you so passionate about whether or not things were viable 20 years ago
