>Where to buy
Aliexpress, gogamegeek, litnxt, keepretro, mechdiy

>What to know about brands
Retroid: Well built, powerful, but expensive (100$+)
Anbernic: Balance between price, power and build quality. Many available products
Powkiddy: Cheap, low quality builds, interesting shapes (square, clamshell, big screen)
Miyoo: One hit wonder
Game Console: Copycat popular products with low prices

>How do I get games
Google: cdromance, tiny best set

>What do I buy
Post your preferences: Money (20$ - 200$), Shape (horizontal, vertical, clamshell, square), Pocketable or not, OS (Linux, Android, Both), Systems (Pre PSX, PSX with extras, 5th gen + Dreamcast plus some PS2/GC, PS2/GC capable)

>Recommended devices
Prices depend on when and where you buy.
- Retroid Pocket 4 (SOON)
- Retroid Pocket 3+ (150$, horizontal, 4.7" 16:9 Screen, can play some PS2/GC, android)
- Anbernic RG405M (150$, horizontal, 4" 4:3 Screen, can play some PS2/GC, android)
- Retroid Pocket 2S (100$, horizontal, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, can play some PS2/GC, android, pocketable)
- Powkiddy x55 (90$, horizontal, 5.5" 16:9 Screen, PSX with extras, linux)
- Powkiddy RGB30 (90$, horizontal, 4" 1:1 Screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)

- R36S (40$, vertical, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, up to PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)

>Things I need to know
- Handhelds come with low quality SD cards. Throw them away and buy new ones.
- It takes some tinkering, specially linux devices.
- Overall quality of these products is very cheap.
- Reviewers get free handhelds, caveat emptor.

had my sf2000 for over a week now, and its actually really good for the price. running multicore 0.10 with fw 1.6. does nes, gb, gbc basically flawlessly. snes is 90% fine with slight slowdowns when theres a heap of sprites on screen. gba is actually near unplayable...pokemon seems fine, but dkcs, mario world and yoshi island all run at around 20% speed. final fantasy origins is completely glitched and unplayable.

the custom cores i have tried are awesome though...doom 1 and 2 work 100% speed flawlessly, snatcher on segaCD works flawlessly too. wonderswan colour emulator (tested final fantasy 1) works perfectly. the custom gba core runs most games iv tested around 10%-20% faster than stock, but still massively unplayable (ff origins no longer crashes, but lags heaps during a battle)

overall, for $30AUD its 100% worth it. if any anons are thinking about getting one for a specific game, let me know and im happy to test it

I'm still very happy with my RG35XX that I got last week.
The speaker is awful for anything past 8bit consoles, and GarlicOS is very buggy though
If you exclusively launch games through the Retroarch menu though it behaves reliably, and it's quite a decent experience compared to Retroarch on the Switch and Deck.
I wish someone would build a handheld with this form factor and Nintendo looking design, but with higher quality components. Anbernic is almost there, but an OLED, better firmware, easier to press shoulder buttons, and a much better speaker would be worth like $150 to me.
The Analogue Pocket is way too big and should really come with an OLED at that price.

out of the box its pretty fucked desu...just need to extract a zip and copy files to the sd card to "update" since it boots from microSD. super simple to do, and theres even an awesome program that manages pretty much everything to do with the sf2000 (themes, firmware versions including custom, roms, thumbnails, etc) called "tadpole" - just need to pop microSD in your computer and run the standalone program to manage it all.

MegaCD - only tried snatcher, but had 0 issues with it. you will need to be running that modified firmware though, it wont do it out of the box. currently u cant remap the custom cores, and one of the buttons for megaCD is mapped to "R" which would be annoying for platformers.

TurboGrafx\PCEngine - it says it supports it and runs almost perfectly but i havent tried. if you rec a few games to try im happy to test it and upload some pics and maybe a webm for ya.

MAME - honestly only tried a few games that came with it and they all seemed fine. I tried to download simpsons arcade (few diff versions) and copy it over, but it wouldnt load. I AM a complete arcade retard tho, so could just be me

the modified firmware is still in its very early days, and theres a spreadsheet from the devs on the git somewhere that shows the status of each emu\system. It looks like dosbox and ps1 MIGHT be coming soon (they mentioned it missing files needed to compile), but not sure how well they will run

just be aware, the button mappings for custom cores are fucked and theres currently no way to change it ("R" being a main button for some reason), the jittery screen on nes\gb\gbc (i dont mind it\dont notice it when playing), theres screen tearing on some consoles\games but again, i dont mind it. L & R are microswitches and so are pretty horrible to use consistently.

just for reference, i have 100% completed megaman x2 and dkc2 SNES and only noticed slowdown when theres a heap of sprites on the screen (and on the dkc2 underwater levels which is odd). for $30 its a steal, and ignore all the tards that say "spend an extra $6 and get RGXXX"...the next cheapest handheld is around $80AUD, which is way too much if you just want to fuck around with old games.

i hope you enjoy it anon! i know i do

Retroarch is the back bone of all custom firmware on these devices.

A retroid pocket 2s might be what you want, (but it's android) but Im fairly certain a powkiddy rgb30 can do everything on that list. But it's also ugly to look at.

PS2 is the most demanding system that those devices can even emulate acceptably in any capacity, so it's understandable. Simulators aside, this thread represents both extremes of the spectrum (when it comes to gaming). On one end, something like SF2000 is probably the best value for money, and on the other, something like Analogue Pocket is some of the worst.
Don't get me wrong. I love my pocket, and I gladly throw money at my hobbies, but to convince someone who just wants to play these games that Pocket is worth the difference between it and SF2000 would be pure cope.
That being said, at least the custom GBC kit would give me something to assemble and have a little fun around with, even if it ended up collecting dust later.

You spend hours pirating roms and setting up retro arch so that the emulator mimics being on actual hardware but it looks like shit with a shit filter on an IPS screen that’s fucking 3-4x the resolution so all the pixels are overblown just to take a screenshot of yourself playing a Pokémon rom hack on an airplane and you convince yourself this is superior than actual hardware where you just plug in a flash card and then play with proper screen res and looks with no effort.

Its sad you've sullied your first playthrough of some classics by playing it on objectively crap hardware, with cramped controls nand a microscopic screen. This is what happens when people don't care about having proper memorable gaming experiences.
The miyoo mini player is just speed running life, he doesn't care how he does things he just wants to say BEAT IT, and move on. The settler, the 9-5 minimum wage no ambition type.
Talk to a miyoo mini player about the game they played, all they'll have to talk about is how they got it working or where they played it.
And no one who plays on these handhelds can convince me they give a fuck about any video games ost.
Its the fake gamers choice, the one who wants to play catch up and play through all the games on every classic game list you can google so they have "cred" to talk to older gamers online. Its cringe, and stop stuffing 2 million games onto your console, its not impressive, it just shows you have no favorites because you have no identity, no soul, you're just living a life of following youtube instructions.

I emulate already on my steam deck. I get 5-6hrs at full charge with emulation station emulators, and while I don't have the oled version, the colors are already pretty solid for a lcd. I honestly just found my ds lite. It's in perfect condition other than some damage to the outer shell, and I honestly like owning my games. it's like personal good boy points. I didn't support the publishers or developers, but I supported a local used game store for the same prices, eBay scalpers charge, if not cheaper on most games.

except for gba games sticking out a little farther than I would like. It doesn't get in the way of the comfortable and lightweight feel of the ds lite. question for those who it may concern; would you suggest upgrading to a dsi xl if I don't mind having to emulate gba games? how much better in brightness and color vividness is the dsi xl screen compared to the ds lite? what systems can the dsi xl emulate well?

Enough with this dead Youtuber meme. You can get the RG35XX for less than $40 on sale, and it has better controls, a bigger screen, and a bigger selection of systems right out of the box, without even considering CFW. If you start a newbie off on the cheapest handheld there is, all that's gonna do is give them a bad impression of retro handhelds, maybe even a bad impression of retro games entirely, and they might just avoid using them altogether.

What do you want to play?
The SF-2000 is one of the most comfortable, ergonomic handhelds ever made but even with a firmware update it can JUST do up to SNES and GBA. Don't bother with shit like playing PS1 on it even if the CFW scene claims they have it running, they don't.
The R36S is the best low-range handheld on the entire market, being able to do DreamCast, N64, and PSP. But its shoulder buttons really fucking suck and, even as a vertislut myself, it does still get uncomfortable to play after awhile.
SF-2000 is infinitely better shaped and built than the R36S, but the R36S can do three generations more than the SF-2000.

Also, I own a Miyoo Mini V4 from October and an RG35XX from February of last year.I have never had issues with any devices' screens becoming loose, but after almost 200 hours of playing DreamCast games on the R36S the bottom left corner of the screen has started to just subtly come loose, likely from the heat of the device (not that hot) gradually drying up the adhesive used to glue the screen in place. And I've had my RG35XX fall off a shelf directly onto its top left corner without a scratch to the screen, let alone it popping off.

Not really, only "downside" is that they can get uncalibrated in shipping sometimes but anything with calibration software renders that a moot problem.

Only reason a lot of companies don't use them anymore is because "modern" sticks are a lot more affordable. It's basically the mechanical keyboard problem, except modern mainstream controllers are somehow stupid expensive.

Like how the fuck does a $70 controller have cheaper sticks than the 2S which is a whole ass console for $90

Question for any Retroid Pocket 2S users here. The compatability charts say Pikmin 1 should run flawlessley, but when I play it on my 2S something feels off. Performance itself seems smooth, but as someone who's played it both on original hardware and on PC dolphin, the controls feel weird in a way I can't exactly put into words

Anyone have this issue and know what I'm talking about?

Lol the reason why you see so many chinese using them is because theyre using cheap no q&a sticks. Sure they work when you use them, but if you actually played these things for hours on end (you wont) you'll see how fast they degrade. Not even taking into account how poor they actually are for analog movement accuracy but what does that matter? Youtubers say theyre immortal sticks so you gotta buy em up yum yum yum!
