how can such a simple game feel so magical?

Don't know. I normally don't get into games like this, but PSO is perfect and I've spent countless hours replaying it. Everything about how it looks and feels works for me. Even offline it's enjoyable just running through Forest for the millionth time. The simple combo system is satisfying. It was also my first real experience with an online game, so that itself was a magical experience. Lots of good memories of just hanging out in the lobbies.

This, this, and this

PSO is literally my happy place. The private server community is such a wholesome community too. Not to sound like a fag or anything but everyone currently in the lobby is like a family. Everyone knows each and we just shoot the shit in the lobby when we’re not grinding & doing quests. The soundtrack just brings the experience together.

It was made with sovl, inspiration and gamedev experience, but also a kind of naivety about online games that led to bold and unique choices. These days, online games are just copy paste, many aspects are considered "solved". Modern games also don't operate within the same limitations, which leads to less artistic expression. Limitations are what make something art and not mere reproduction.

It's still fun but playing online is even better in my opinion and you'll usually progress faster. Only downside if you play PSOBB, your characters are saved on the server so you need internet access to play at all, but it's also the best way to play online (Ephinea has the biggest playerbase), plus PC lets you assign items/techs/etc to numbers on your keyboard which is definitely an advantage.
If you want to be able to play without internet access or want to play local split-screen, play the GameCube version

A combination of character design, setting design, and music made PSO a cool experience...Especially when it dropped, and the whole MMO thing was relatively new.

The reason it's so simple is why its so good. People especially today get trapped into thinking that if a game has MORE things you can do it is automatically better. Sometimes adding more just distracts from and waters down the good stuff. PSO works because it's only the good stuff on constant loop and theres no bullshit filler to distract from it. It's why every sequel to PSO has been lame. How do you expand on something that works precisely because it is so compact and efficient?

PSO is the only game I ever wanted to actually live in, much the same way tons of faggots fantasize about Pokemon being real. Despite how dangerous it all fucking is, because the online multiplayer aspect was the main drive, all of the promotional and concept art just focused on teams of four just chilling out in beautiful places. The only thing to have ever come close to ever giving me that sensation since has been, maybe, VRChat but just fucking barely. Eh, I would argue Tetris DS as a package is a better experience than the original Tetris on its own. The key is not have any experimentation replace or distract from the core enjoyment. Crafting was only optional if you grinded so much you could afford to buy the crafted shit from other players to avoid the headache of crafting, and even though PSU had far better gameplay and variety than PSO's simple 1-2-3 rhythm for everything, going through any PSU level already feels like you've already been there a thousand times before. There's variety in scenery but not layout or design. It's the same fucking hallway and groups of mobs nonstop and it's not fun. It especially didn't help that PSU was plagued by so many promises of new areas behind literally locked doors and gates but never fucking opened any of them.

PSO was an online game before the days of WoW, where normies were obsessed about having the best gear at all times instead of the actual experience of playing the game for itself. Sure you could hunt for specific things in PSO but it was rare I remember anyone playing it the same way people played WoW, where they insisted on using fifty mods to track quests and teleport you to npcs and basically play the game for them.

>> No.10579591

First of all they're not compatible since PSO is a lobby-based game and not an MMO. You'd have to compare PSO more to Diablo (which it is directly inspired by). Second, people absolutely did min/max PSO and pre-WoW MMOs in fun killing ways too. You just were too young to be aware of it.

Gamecube version is best for single player and split-screen multi. But be warned that if you ever decide to go online, going online with the console versions is possible but dangerous. On Dreamcast, you risk losing your character data. On Gamecube, you risk losing all unequipped items on your character. These versions have very few players playing online anyways. If you think you might want to go online at some point, just play Blue Burst on PC on Ephinea private servers.

NGL I wasn't being entirely honest in that post, I just didn't feel like going into detail. At launch, PSO Version 1 for Dreamcast had the highest player count I'd ever seen. Over 1000 IIRC. But the game having no subscription fee was the reason for it's high player count. Version 2 on Dreamcast bumped the level cap from 100 to 200 and introduced Ultimate difficulty, but it also introduced a monthly fee. PSO on Gamecube had the same monthly fee, and so did Blue Burst later. So, these games had a significantly lower player count. Based on what I can recall, I remember the player counts for GCN and BB being about 80-180-ish most of the time, maybe 200+ when GCN version was still somewhat new. Ephinea seems to have between 100 and 250 players at any given time. Even if my numbers are completely wrong due to my shit memory, what I can tell you for certain is that Ephinea has more players now on average than GCN or BB did. No doubt this is due to Ephinea not charging a fee and being much easier to get online with than any other version, official or not.

I couldn't get into PS Zero for one single reason: you were restricted to only 6 actions on your buttons, period. Out of the dozens you could potentially use. These included very important actions like basic attacks, techniques, and items. It was SEVERELY restricting, and made the game difficult and frustrating to play, especially if you were used to the quick-menus of GCN and the number hotkeys of BB like I was. Utilizing the DS's touch screen for additional actions could have made Zero exponentially better! How Sega overlooked this basic QOL feature is beyond my comprehension.

A kid at school had PSO and convinced me it was worth a play. Best price I found for it was ~$10 new on Amazon. This was 2003 so everything was bottoming out on Dreamcast stuff. Had to fight with my mom to order it (blah blah blah I don't want my credit card stolen) and got it, only to discover they sent me Version 2 by mistake. I asked them to do a swap or refund, which would entail paying for return shipping, which dumb kid me did not know how to do, nor could broke kid me afford, and I sure wasn't about to tell my mom they sent me the wrong version, which by extension also meant no online, so I played solo. Also coincidentally was able to grab the strategy guide at a local Babbage's. Ended up being the last winter my parents were together and my dad watched me play PSO and Seaman off and on in our sun room until I had finished both games. You're goddamn right that three-hit combo system kept me occupied. Still have the game, the guide, and the poster that came with the guide, too.

On the versions that charged a fee, the vast majority of players would be playing Ultimate difficulty, unless they were starting a new character. Ultimate is where the real game truly begins. Since Ephinea is free, there are alot more casual players, and people who are just curious to try it out for a bit.

PSO had soul because like Diablo that it took inspiration from, and the games like Runescape and Everquest that were out at the same time, all these games were just forging new worlds. They were trying to attempt to try new things, or improve upon something that was still fresh and most people hadn't tried it yet. Everything hadn't become so formulaic yet. And development costs hadn't ballooned to the point where experimentation was a dirty word. PSO just also managed to carve out such a unique, and fresh aesthetic that has yet to ever be copied, or matched. Even PSU and PSO2 are nothing more than soulless zombie clones.

Its genuinely amazing its any fun at all. On paper it should fucking suck, its slow, extremely repetitive, doesn't have much variety and its entirely a grind with almost no goal. And despite all of that its somehow a ton of fun, addictive and just oozing with pure soul. Something about the environments the music and just grinding away with the fellas keeps me coming back time and time again.

Incredible its still supported by the community too, I played the Dreamcast version all the way through online with a friend 2 years back and there were still a bunch of people actively online and we even got into some hilarious hyjinx with some randoms in a way I hadn't experienced since the early days of online gaming. When you die in the game you drop your equipment and my friend stole this dudes insanely rare and powerful weapon on accident and after the fight we gaslit the guy into thinking we didn't take it and he ran all the way back through the long ass dungeon and then just left the lobby. Later he made a lobby called NO THIEVES and we were crying laughing. We joined and tried to give it back to him since we were just messing around but he was butthurt and "didn't want it back anymore" lmao.

I recently found my network adapter for GameCube and am planning on playing through it all over again especially since Ive never done Episode 2 before. See you guys online.

I actually liked PSO2 rather quite a bit when I was playing it on Xbone, maybe it didn't quite HIT the same way the first game did but that might have been an issue of me being older and less focused on games but I did like hanging out on the hub world and going down to the different planets. New Genesis killed it for me though. I just don't like the hub they have there and a lot of the new teaks kind of bug me. But really I just want my space station hub back. I liked being there, I liked seeing all the warning lights go crazy when a big nasty event boss was attacking the ship. It was alright.

For me, it gave me that 'ache'
it's hard to explain, and I've only felt it distinctively three times when playing a game, and one of those games was PSO
it's where you're playing a game, taking in all the sights and sounds, enjoying it, and then you see THIS and someone is playing THAT and he's got THIS move and you just picked up THAT item and someone told you about a skill you can learn that you desperately want - you're sort of overloaded and want to explore absolutely everything everywhere at once and you've got that feeling in your chest like 'aaaa where should I go, first maybe this way, or that way, screw it lets go over here'
it's an odd feeling, and a very, very rare one for me

The thing is, with PSO and even Diablo, when I make a character I feel like I'm playing that character. A lot of builds and options are more skill/gear based rather than meta based like so many other MMOs. PSO is my favorite game of all time, but a lot of people in this thread are praising it for reasons that are just plain inaccurate. I know this feeling this 'Ache'. Its happened to me three times before as well. The first was Phantasy Star Online, just as I had described it. The second was when I booted up World of Warcraft and I heard Elwynn Forest for the very first time. It was magical. The last one was the most pronounced, the one that I believe has had the most effect on me. In 2008, I came across a video on Youtube. It was a huge, half-man half-machine creature speaking down to the player from atop a cliff rock. His voice was metallic, his belly huge, and along his neck was a collar of cannons. The battle was strange, the player fighting in a huge chamber with tall walls and using paint and orbs to destroy this cybernetic creature. By pure chance, that game showed up in my algorithm in 2017 again and I was able to learn what it was. Typгop - The Void. That game left me with an ache I never knew before - a haunting, longing feeling that stays with me even now.

That's one reason I love it. The community has always been pretty chill, and most of the time people don't care if you're not playing optimally or even messing around a bit with a goofy build. Neither PSO or PSO2 are MMOs.

All of PSO2's problems early on were because they added unnecessary shit that wasn't needed in PSO (leveling subclasses, skill trees, dozens of quests to collect vendor trash), stuff from PSO that they didn't commit fully to (Mags not tradable, you need to pay to have more than one) or else just plain misunderstanding the philosophy of PSO to begin with (short missions instead of long dungeon crawls, waiting at level cap instead of an absurdly high level cap you work towards over time)

I really don't want to discourage anyone from playing online, but I want to let you know that going online in the console versions of PSO is risky, especially on Dreamcast. The odds of you losing your character data to some dickhead with a gameshark is high. If you insist on playing the Dreamcast version, either find some way of backing up your saved data beforehand, or only use a character you don't mind losing. If you think you may eventually want to take PSO seriously at all at some point in the future, just play Blue Burst on Ephinea. It has far more content, more items, better character balance, more reasonanable drop rates, better controls, an actual playerbase, a functioning economy, and countless QOL improvements. Dreamcast version is fine if you just want to check out the game for a few hours to satisfy your curiosity, though.

You're right, I wasn't being entirely honest. That peak was hit in the early days of Dreamcast Version 1, before cheaters destroyed the game and it's playerbase. Then Sega charged a monthly fee for Version 2, and every version of the gane that came after that, reducing the player count even further. Much further. The early days of DC Version 1 was the only time the game ever hit such high player numbers, and the only reason that happened is because the game was the new hotness, and had no monthly fee. I left this information out of my post because I didn't feel like explaning all of this at the time. So, allow me to correct myself; Blue Burst on Ephinea has a higher player count than any legit version of PSO aside from Dreamcast version 1, when you could literally burn a CD for the game and play it completely for free.

This is not WoW or FFXIV. Pick whatever class you think looks cool. However, >>10593375 is correct, I would avoid FOrces until you know what you're doing, and have some items already collected to give your FOrce a good start.

>>10593380
>>10593384
RAnger is easiest, HUnter is intermediate, FOrce is hardest. The game describes HU as easiest, but it's wrong.

>>10593389
This is also true. Casts (androids) are a bit harder to use than fleshy races, but are the best race to use in multiplayer if you're not playing a FO. Like I said here >>10581703 , the ideal multiplayer party is 3 casts (any combination of HUnters and RAngers) and 1 FOrce. Fleshy races are better for soloing though, due to being able to heal and buff themselves with techniques (magic), albeit weaker techniques than what FOrces have access to. This is not a game for hardcore minmaxers though. Don't feel pressured to play a cast. RAmar and RAmarl are the easiest classes to play, and do just fine despite not being the "best" choices. The true ideal party is exactly 1 FOrce and any combination of 3 non-FOrce classes.
Playing as a big titty elf is a more than good enough reason to play HUnewearl. Fun fact: Rouge the Bat's sexy alternate costume in Sonic Adventure 2 comes from PSO's HUnewearl, if you're into that kind of thing.

Also the attack combo system works exactly like it does in Chrono Cross; each successive hit is more accurate than the one that proceeded it.
Most Accurate: Regular attack.
Less Accurate: Powerful attack.
Least Accurate: Special attack.

You trigger the next hit in the combo by pressing a button right before the end of your current attack's animation.

This one dude in a mag feeding room got really pissed, so I kept coming back with alts and doing it. Then I made an alt with super generic name (Kate), joined the room. Then, waiting after gaining his trust, I played it again and started dancing.

HUcast and HUcaseal are probably the most difficult of the non-FO classes to use, but they're very rewarding, especially HUcast. WIth high-level Shifta from a FOrce or a photon blast chain, they hit like a truck. Traps can also be very useful when used at the right time. There's a reason you always see casts use freeze traps on specific spawns in TTF runs.

>>10593865
It's not just projectiles. RAngers do have lower defense and evade than HUnters on average, but I don't think this small downside outweighs them not needing to get up close to the enemy, and being able to continually pound the enemy with uninterrupted attacks due to not needing to dodge as often as HUnters. The differences in defensive stats are also more pronounced at lower levels, and are actually less noticeable at Lv 120+. Granted, this is all somewhat subjective. In my 1000+ hours of play, I have personally found RAngers easier to use than HUnters, but your experience may differ.

> The developers aren’t gonna classify these classes like that for no reason.
Lol. Lmao even. This is Sega we're talking about. They absolutely do get shit like this wrong. The class descriptions also claim that FOrces are the highest damage dealers, which is laughably wrong once you hit Ultimate difficulty. Sega probably INTENDED for HUs to be the easiest to use, and for FOs to be the highest damage dealers, but that's not how it worked out. There's speculation that, due to the unusual way that technique damage is calculated, enemies in Ultimate difficulty ended up with higher technique resistance than what Sega intended.

PSO is a game where you get your inventory filled with so many shitty rares that are good for low level players. So I always gave tons of item away to low level people. Sometimes I worried that I'd be seen as a simp giving them to girl characters, despite handing them out to everyone. It's weird how people still treated girl characters like they were girls sometimes, considering that with PSO the different classes are locked to genders so there's gameplay reasons to play as the opposite sex. Yeah the main classes are HU, RA, and FO, but the specific class of character is a set race and gender. FOmar and FOmarl for example aren't just different genders, they have different stats, so you might choose FOmarl over FOmar purely for gameplay reasons.

What are you guys on about? Melee FOmar is one of the most popular FO builds in high-level play. The fact that damage cancel exists, combined with enemies having high technique resistance in Ultimate difficulty, makes spamming attack techniques a bad idea. So it actually makes sense for a FO player to melee instead, and with the highest ATP of all FO's, FOmar is basically meant to be a battlemage.

PSO is a janky game. It does not follow the usual RPG meta of tank-dps-healer. FOs are not the glass-cannons that mages often are in other RPGs, even if that's what Sega originally intended. In fact, in Ultimate difficulty, FOs will typically be doing less damage on average than the HUs and RAs. Their value mostly lies in support. Their level 30 support techniques can GREATLY boost the attack power of their teammates, making quests much faster and easier than they would be without a FO in the party. Any damage done by the FO themselves is basically just a bonus. So, even though a FOmar's melee attacks will be weaker than that of a HU, they can still do respectable damage (buffed by their own level 30 Shifta of course), and by using melee for damage instead of spamming attack techniques, they avoid the risk of damage-cancelling high-damage HU attacks with their low-damage AoE techniques. Damage cancel is a real bitch, and needs to be taken into consideration with any FO build.

On top of all of this, FOmar can still use level 30 attack techniques like any other FO for the situations where a specific attack technique is useful. Also, like the other new classes added to Ep1&2, FOmars have some unique attack animations. His unique melee animations are generally better than those of other FOs, which makes sense considering his role. He holds katanas like Sephiroth, which is kinda neat. And he can actually look pretty cool if you choose a nice color scheme for his robes, and avoid choosing one of the dumber-looking hats.

>> No.10598616

The major downside to a melee FOmar build is his low ATA. You can counteract this by acuiring weapons with high Hit. That makes melee FOmar a build for serious players, who are willing to put the time in to acquire high-Hit weapons.

TLDR: FOmar is good actually.

I love this game, my only criticisms are that the speed of play is way slower than it needs to be (which maybe has to do with hardware restrictions) and the fact that you have to grind an absurd amount of matches to raise to level enough to unlock the full drop pool. Online it wasn't so bad but offline you're looking at doing the same story mission on loop 10+ times.

Also because card collection is tied to characters and requires grinding, it's impossible to try and show this game to my friends unless we want to use nothing but the starter decks.

In terms of story, it's actually quite a throwback to Phantasy Star 4 with the same manga style cutscenes and dramatic plot twists. It takes place 20 years after Episode 2, so it's cool to see how that world evolved after they defeated Falz

I remember having fun until I tried to play the Dark Story side, holy fuck is the game completely one-sided for Heroes against Darks. Dark team can almost exclusively only use mob cards while Heroes get to use all sorts of characters, weapons, items, etc. It isn't anything like Kingdom Hearts: CHain of Memories where Rikku's unique deck makes for an interesting challenge... team Dark in PSO epIII just fucking sucks.

Came out while the internet was still in its adolescence. IIRC WoW hadn't released yet so it was THE MMORPG for consoles. It also had a cool sci-fi aesthetic before the genre started being done to death by stuff like .//HACK. And finally, split screen multiplayer meant your buddies could level up and grind with you without having to lug their PC over for a LAN party.

I am going through the list of items right now. Armor and shields do not actually top the strongest armor from v2, but it's not like defence stats do anything anyway. On the bright side there are a lot of shields with cool models. Every weapon category got at least one weapon stronger than the previous stronger weapon. According to my understanding of damage formulas, they are going to do, on average, 20 more damage per hit, which is not much. On the unit side there are units that increase stats by five more points that older units. The standout is Smartlink that removes accuracy penalty for shooting with a non-Ranger class. There are also QoL changes, like quests where you have easier time geting some rares from earlier versions and a wandering tekker that sells almost all of them, the caveat being that it's a 1 in 25 chance to win a real rare rare for whole 100000 meseta.
Bottom line: don't tell that anon that there are games these days that update every few months and add new tiers of gear, it would melt his brain.

I assume he was talking about some items being straight-up upgrades to classic EP1&2 stuff or new units/armors giving set buffs and improving very specific loadouts in order to make EP4's enemies less of a pain in the ass to deal with. It's easy to get attached to stuff in PSO since your playstyle is based on your loadout.
Personally I don't mind Red Saber being a bit more relevant for a while (thanks to armor buffs) even if Excalibur invalidates the whole saber category or hunter-exclusive armor having built-in attack speed units and telling me to throw battle units in the garbage bin. For me EP4 was ass because subterranean desert was shit and government quests sucked (the port to PC wasn't perfect graphics-wise either but same can be said about every port/remaster/etc. I guess). I still appreciate PSOBB for being so easy to mod thanks to the community (both graphics and enemy/item data).
>don't tell that anon that there are games these days that update every few months and add new tiers of gear
Honestly I appreciate that PSO is a "complete package" rather than a corporate rat race simulator. Items in PSO don't just suddenly lose value and that adds a bit of extra flavor to their uniqueness. I would tell you to ask PSO2NGS' players how they are enjoying their bi-annual gear grind but I assume at this point all of them gave up on it thanks to the pre-built welfare sets they get in every event.

Modern grindfest-as-a-service titles are too much about the "next new thing" (and every now and then an option to turn the "previous old thing" into a cosmetic). I wish more games had mechanics like PSP2i's Extend feature, or tried to keep old weapons relevant with various systems like Warframe (even if half of them ends up with being huge grind with a shiny "pay2skip" button next to them).

There is no rush to the "end" in PSO, every step is enjoyable and starting fresh characters is even more fun than endgame shit imo. That's why I love Challenge Mode, though finding 4 people to run it with has always been a pain

Don't spout your dumbassed opinions like they're indisputable facts when you've put no time into the game and have no idea wtf you're talking about. It's an online RPG for fuck's sake, they're meant to be played for a long period of time. If you just want to check out PSO for a few hours before moving on to another game, that's perfectly fine, but that doesn't give you the right to spout incorrect nonsense based on your meagre 20 hours of easiest-difficulty gameplay like it's fact and not be called out on it. Instead of saying "this class is shit", say "this class seems shit from what I've played so far".

> you need to appreciate that you weren't the average player and not everyone obsessively scoured the meta end game through PSO-World. Even within the PSO community, rarely anyone cared about that shit.

You're wrong about this too. The official servers charged a monthly fee. This meant that it was very rare for the official servers to get new players. You're right when you say that I wasn't the average player; I was an outright casual compared to most other players on the server. Almost every game being played was on Ultimate difficulty, and the few that weren't were long-time players starting new characters. Again, you don't know wtf you're talking about.

I started over on Ephinea recently, and I must say, it's very refreshing to play PSO with such a large playerbase, with players ranging from complete newbs to grizzled veterans. I have been having an absolute blast introducing the game to new players and helping them out, as this was something I almost never got to do on official servers. It's so much more satisfying to help out new players than it is to do the 12th TTF run of the night, and the gratitude that these new players give me is far more gratifying reward than the EXP I could have grinded out with that time instead. I always make sure to get them off to a good start with their first mag, and get them into the habit of feeding it constantly.

It was also alot of fun being a lowbie and having high-level players join my game, introduce themselves, and offer to introduce me to the game, thinking that I'm new. "Thanks for the offer fren, but I'm actually familiar with the game. I'm just getting myself established on a new server. Can't wait to get to Ult and start hunting for my old gear again!" Next thing I know, I'm a Lv 18 having in-depth discussions about late-game gear with a group of Lv 180+'s, before they help me powerlevel my way from Normal to Vhard in one night. Good times. This is such an easy game to make friends in.

>I was talking about FOmar's completely-unique-to-him attack animation when equipped a katana
You mean this? FOmar uses male hunter's melee animations, at least in PSOBB. I'm fairly sure this also applies to EP1&2 and EP3 (Break uses this animation too) but I can't test it. I agree it's neat (I enjoy fucking around with him every now and then), but it's not FOmarl's "2000's girl power set" kind of neat.
But FOmar have unique animations for other weapons (like fist weapons), just like the other EP2's classes and FOmarl with her "2000's girl power" set.

What's the actual worst class in the game? HUmar? RAmar maybe? I can't imagine it's any Force, buffs and debuffs are too good. People always want a Force on the team. I guess best classes change too depending on solo vs. team play. It's a game where you can get away doing fine with any class, so it doesn't matter all that much I guess in the end. Just interesting.

What's the best resource/community for PSO these days? I haven't played since SCHThack in the mid 2010s. Might start a new character on Ephinea, this thread has me in the mood to play again. Maybe I'll actually get to 200 this time.

It's hard to say. It depends on alot of variables. Like, RAmar is indeed not the ideal choice for team play, but him and RAmarl are probably the two best choices for soloing. And you certainly wouldn't be holding a party back by playing as them. HUcaseal and RAcaseal are a bit redundant, as they're basically slightly worse than their male counterparts while filling the same niche, but again, that doesn't make them bad or not worth playing. FOnewm is probably the worst choice for FO, seeing as he specializes in attack techniques in a game where attack techniques are effectively neutered. But I could be wrong; it's entirely possible that there's a good build for him that I'm simply not aware of. Any competent FO player is welcome in pretty much any party regardless of which FO they play. They all have level 30 shifta, deband, jellen, and zalure after all.

The thing about FOs is, you want exactly one FO in your party. No more, no less. Every FO in the party after the first is somewhat redundant. It's one of the big reasons why I personally don't main FO. It feels great to be the one FO in the party, until a 2nd FO shows up. Of course though, even a party with multiple FOs can do just fine. This game really isn't hardcore enough to warrant worrying about the ideal party setup. Play whatever class you like, and join whatever party you like. What classes are you considering?

Seems pretty damned cool to me, I just can't say much about it since I've barely played it. Those are all solid choices. I went with RAmarl myself as my main this time around, knowing full well that she's not as ideal for teamplay as RAcast, but her level 20 support techniques combined with ranged attacks makes her independent and versatile. Those Lv. 20 support techniques makes her an okay faux-FO if your party is lacking one, similar to HUnewearl. I generally don't recommend starting out with a FO as your first character on a new server, but if you're up for the challenge, go for it. I like to already have some high-level technique disks saved up for my new FO, and a MIND mag to use them with, but it's absolutely not necessary. You're likely to get gifted some good tecnnique disks from other players anyways. Both FO classes you mentioned are excellent choices.

PSO on Xbox doesn't need online to play, it just needs an Xbox live account saved to the hard drive. There's a program that can create an "Xbox live account" onto a USB stick and then you can use a special connector ($5 on Amazon) to transfer it to your system. Sounds like a pain in the ass but only takes 5 minutes to do. I think the only thing is that you have to use a certain kind of USB stick (or a PSP, apparently) that the Xbox can recognize. You can finish the main story but it's so bare bones, most of the heart and lore is in side shit which very little is available in offline single player. You'll miss things like getting a Tails Chao for Sonic Adventure 2 and story elements with side characters that are richer than the main cast such as Rico.

PSZ just felt like a really downgraded version of PSO to me. Like >>10582270 said, there was no quick menu for swapping weapons or using techs, the camera felt like it was lower to the ground (making it harder to see what was in front of you), something about the attack animations just weren't as satisfying, and perhaps the biggest problem for me was the god-awful Nintendo online system. You couldn't join games that were already in progress, parties were put together through matchmaking that never seemed to work right, and you were stuck to only being able to run one dungeon or quest for the duration of the lobby. And if you wanted to play with friends, you had to deal with Friend Code bullshit.

It was just a poor substitute for PSO.

The old version of Tethealla is still open-source, and you can find old executables (servers and localhost-linked game.exe) based on this version on a pinned thread on Ephinea's forums. Unfortunately this old version have some bugs (like luck material drops being entirely replaced with monomates) and also lack all features current Tethealla have, the default drop table doesn't include any of the JP-only items, and you need to find all of the editors and server management tools to properly use it.
I was able to "fix" the material bug and added one feature (being able to select your SectionID) back then when the Tethealla forum still had people talking about it. It's fun to be able to edit stuff like giving Excal's multi-hit propriety to katanas and sabers, adding Zonde-boost propriety to Raikiri for my FOmar, messing with drop rates so I can put more swords on Skyly, etc. But honestly it was too much effort since there are no tutorials for any of the tools and data is all over the place (item stacking and races' material limits are saved on the game's executable while the rest of the character data is saved on the server, the same item data needs to be saved in different files, every bit of info have a different editor, quest creator is a mystery to me, etc.).
Even if you just want the "plug'n'play" experience (like a typical emulator), a bit of tinkering is required to turn the servers on for the first time, you need at least the server management tool to make your login routine a bit more smooth, and the old executable is kind of fucked on W10 (the game crashes if you use alt-tab on fullscreen mode). The emulator is mostly smooth sailing after that, at least.

tl;dr If you want to play offline just play EP1&2+. Only use Tethealla if you somehow fell in love with EP4's dumb desert and yet really dislike the idea of having your save attached to a server (because you have Schthack PTSD or something), or if you want your own Zonde-boosting Raikiri.

I have tried to return to PSO and found that i can't bear how little control you have omer your characters movement. On the bright side, I rediscovered PSU that passed me by when it was new. It turned out it improved everything, without going full action gameplat like PSO2.

>> No.10600964

>>10600938
PSO is a janky game. There is a trick for this. You know how your character goes into a battle-ready stance that slows you down when enemies are nearby? Bring up a menu, any menu, to negate this. Could be the chat menu, start menu, quick select menu, whatever. You can now move at full speed, even when surrounded by enemies, and find a gap to slip through unharmed.

>> No.10600987

>>10600938
The one thing PSU did not improve on was the actual level design. Even though they have far more variety in themes, the actual layouts of the stages become very dry very quickly. PSU is a chore to go through for even the fifth time while PSO was still enjoyable even after the 500th time. It all comes down to PSU's level design, but Phantasy Star Portable 2 fixes most of those issues and even improves upon everything PSU did well.

I couldn't get into PSU, despite being so hyped for it that I preordered both the PS2 and PC versions of the game, knowing that they were cross-compatible and that I could use my online character on either system. And while most folks hated that the offline and online were completely seperate, I actually thought that that was a great idea. By keeping the multiplayer portion completely online with server-side saving, you can avoid many of the cheating and griefing issues present in the online modes of previous console entries. And for single player, you play a proper single-player action-RPG, with a predefined character who has a proper story arc, and is uniquely powerful and adaptable compared to player-made multiplayer characters, who goes on to become a legendary character in the story told by the online multiplayer mode. On paper, it sounded perfect. In practice... Sega gonna Sega. PSO hooked me as a game that you could just pick up and play, yet had plenty of depth that you could sink your teeth into. PSU just felt really bogged-down and player-unfriendly. I'll admit that I didn't really give it much of a chancr to grow on me, but PSO didn't need to "grow on me", it was compelling right from the get-go.

I don't want to bore you guys with a detailed description of the things I didn't like about PSU, but Phantasy Star Portable 2 surprised the hell out of me. It was like PSU, but fixed 90% of my problems with PSU, by being more like PSO. PSPo2 is literally the only other online RPG I've ever been able to get into other than PSO. I just wish that that there was a way to use a keyboard to chat.

>>10600995
This is one of so many examples of how PSO got things right purely by accident. If you know the traps are there ahead of time, have a menu open. If not, you might get hit. It reminds me of crawling over mines in MGS.

PSU was god awful at launch, it didn't actually get good until over a year in with the Ambition of Illumimus expansion, after which a lot of people had already written it off.

On top of that, only the Xbox 360 version was really good, as the PC/PS2 shared servers were overrun with hackers which Sega of America could not keep under control. And this was back when 360s were still RRoD'ing so they weren't really a good investment.

But yeah these days if you want a PSU fix you really should just play Portable 2 Infinity.

As far as I know the only direct connections (no easter eggs, just in-game storylines) to PSO in other games are PSZ's post-ending quest and maybe PSP2i's true ending (and that goofy "friendship is time/space magic" quest), though in the latter's case it's a bit hard to say if the reveal is an intended part of PSO's timeline or just the devs fucking around with nostalgia fanservice (or both). The goofy quest only exists so people don't blame Nagisa for killing millions.
That said, I believe it's possible to assume PSO have an indirect connection of sorts with the classic series, if you are into fan theories.
>PSZ mentions that "Earth" (PSZ's planet) used to be called "Coral" before Mother decided the only way to fix Coral was to genocide humanity and all of their toys
This is the bit of information (plus newmans being technically failures and Mother Trinity project) that connects PSZ to PSO. Despite its name, Phantasy Star Zero is actually set hundreds of years after PSO's events.
>Pionner 1 brought mostly military and scientists to Ragol, and Pioneer 2 was full of civilians and mercenaries (and criminal organizations full of knife-ear womanlets for some reason). I assume the corrupt politicians who ruined Coral didn't just decide to die with their planet, so maybe a Pioneer 3 was built at some point, especially because P2 cut communications with Coral in EP3.
>both PSII's Earthmen and PSO's Coral are advanced civilizations of humans who left their dying planets and invented super-computers (both of them called Mother) that are capable of modifying the landscape of planets
And maybe a possible Pioneer 3 ended up on Algol somehow.
All that said, the series is full of intentional parallels like that, and maybe PSZ's writers just wanted a cool reveal and the name "Earth" is just a coincidence. As a side note, did you know this series have at least three (possibly four, maybe even five) planets called EARTH? Funny stuff.

>> No.10613264

I would just log on, join an open room or make my own non-password room, and chill out while getting to know every rando who dropped in and admire their cool stuff. If anything this part of the game is still alive and even better because you don't have to worry about hackers as much. Sometimes you'd join a trade room where you showed each other your collections and worked out a deal. Sometimes some really high level guy would show up and drop all the junk rares he didn't need any more. Sometimes you were the high level guy.

Some online games you really can't capture the same community and atmosphere they had back during their peak but PSO is so simple in design that it hasn't changed much

i played BB during Open Beta, It was comfy.
Most of gameplay was Government Quests (had to do them to unlock next difficulty) and new Zones.
EP2 was not available, let alone EP4.
Starting Hard Mode i'd mostly just run free field with other players, farming DB's Sabers and Kaladbolgs.
One guy gifted me G.A. Sabers one time, it was the best experience ever.
My Mag was a LV80 Varaha, and i was a Red Hair Red Suit HUmar, with ofc. Skyly.

Do you think wols jumping out of holographic walls was a Bradbury reference?

>The Hadley family lives in an automated house called "the Happylife Home", filled with machines that aid them in completing everyday tasks, such as tying their shoes, bathing them, or cooking their food. The two children, Peter and Wendy, enjoy time in the "nursery", a virtual reality room able to realistically reproduce any place they imagine, and grow increasingly attached to it.
>The parents, George and Lydia, wonder if the automated house's functions have rendered their roles as parents superfluous. They are also perplexed that the nursery seems stuck on a wild African veldt in which lions eat what they believe to be animals. There they also find recreations of their personal belongings and hear strangely familiar screams. Wondering why their children are so fascinated by this scene of death, they decide to consult psychiatrist David McClean, who suggests they leave the home, move to the country, and learn to be more self-sufficient.
>Peter and Wendy strongly resist and beg their parents to let them have one last visit to the nursery. They relent and allow the children more time in the nursery. When George and Lydia come to fetch them, the children lock their parents into the nursery with the pride of lions, and the two realize that the screams belonged to simulated versions of themselves. Shortly after, David comes by to look for George and Lydia. He finds the children enjoying lunch in the nursery and sees the lions and vultures eating carcasses in the distance, which are implied to be the parents.

When you approach enemies it switches into the second part that remixes battle themes from the same game.

Started with Dreamcast version. Average day was hanging out in the lobby, joining random rooms and running through levels (occasionally quests, but usually just levels for me). It was a roll of the dice who I'd meet or what I'd be doing. Eventually I'd have a big list of players I played with, and we would mail each other when on to come join each other's games. Sometimes I'd solo run through some areas or do quests. Other times I'd sit around feeding my mag, or make funny symbol chat faces. I'd also just hang around in the lobby or in a game for a long time just messing around and talking to people. I had a few offline friends playing at the time too, so occasionally I'd play together with them and talk through the game.

Sometimes a guy would join my games and give out good items (often hacked or duped back then). Later on I'd join people's games and give out cheap rares myself.

It became this a lot of days when I started playing on Schthack, but the rest still happened. There was also some funny people I met, like one guy who turned the lobby into a "PSO Idol" event where people competed (pretending to sing or other mini events). I won that, which was cool. I miss the guy who organized that, wonder what happened to him. In general with PSO, there was no shortage of people messing around and trying goofy stuff.

I found a tool to extract resources from Blue Burst that happened to work on Card Revolution. These are the high-res versions of card art. Each was stored in four pieces, I composited them. Things yet to do: remove black bars in the bottom, rename images.
Dummied art included. The game actually has more cards than you can get in the official release and there is a mod that restores them:

Apparently, there are fully functional cards for all Ep1&2 enemies except bosses, almost all weapons (except s-ranks, alternative versions of agito/flowen/DB, second berill hands, second neiclaw, second hitogata and colored cards) and all photon blasts (these were supposed to be the only cards that required two players to use and this mechanic works, albeit without the photon blast sound)
