Its really not that bad.
The sonic levels are actually pretty fun, its only the stuff after it that bogs the game down. It's a cool concept to see the story unfold from different character's perspectives but it ultimately doesn't matter if the gameplay is subpar compared to what came before. Just feels like needless bloat.
Double the amount of Sonic levels and get rid of everything else (except maybe have Tail's missions be relegated to unlockable side content cuz I'm a sucker for rail shooters) and you've moved Sonic Adventure from a good game to a great one.

Sonic Adventure 2 is better

It really has not stood the test of time in my honest opinion but it's a perfectly serviceable 3d platformer if you're willing and able to look past its flaws.

It's one of those games I tricked myself into liking because "it's Sonic and I have two whole games to play on Dreamcast right now." Once you do Sonic and maaaaybe Tails it traps you in a Stockholm Syndrome scenario where you feel obligated to play through the other characters even though they aren't fun in the least. I guess it at least apologizes to you at the end with a pretty good final boss.

The only annoying part for me was Big the Cat and his story doesn't last that long anyway. Anyway this seems to be the only good Sonic thread on /vr/ right now, feels like we are being raided again sadly

Agreed, Sonic's genuinely well done and plays a lot like his 2D counterpart, but in 3D! It's great, I agree that the rest of the adventure isn't up to par, but Sonic's campaign is by far the longest, so it's fine. It was a good transition into 3D for sure. I wish SEGA had built upon this gameplay style.

Sonic Adventure was always good.
Sonic Adventure 2 was always good.

If the game was sonic levels only but also more polished it would have rivaled mario 64 as best launch title. How come systems have been launching with B content since 7th gen?

Sonic Adventure is the game that comes to mind whenever I think about this hard-to-articulate concept where players are in a state-of-mind to pay actual, genuine attention to the art, music, and other peripheral content of a game they're playing.
Essentially, the difference between going through a game on auto-pilot and being actively-focused and engaged with a game is something that is determined before you even start up the game, and is a huge factor of whether you'll like something or not.
Now, Sonic Adventure is a completely mediocre game, but because it was a Sonic game people in 1999 were (perhaps undeservedly) actively paying attention to it while playing it, which is why people fondly remember its art, music, style, etc., while people that played it well after aren't in that state of mind and don't necessarily pay any more attention to its content than if they were playing Vexx, or Ty the Tazmanian Tiger, or Voodoo Vince, etc.

Basically if you're willing to be impressed by a game you're going to start thinking shit like Azurik is deep and cool so don't do that.

Sonic Adventure's overall reception online is, to me, one of the most blatant cases of historical revisionism in video games, it's quite ridiculous.

I blame Sonic haters who jumped on the trend, but mostly YouTubers and people who suck at Sonic, but like sounding smart about sucking.

>> No.10612009

i love the Adventure games, but i don't defend the Adventure games. i know what they are. SEGA waited too late to transition Sonic to 3D and so when the time came, they had no idea what to do with him.
Adventure was born the minute someone in a room full of SEGA execs said
>Quick, what's our best selling games? Sega Bass Fishing? Put it in.

>> No.10612115

>>10606084
It's a fun game with a great storyline paired with amazing music. Probably the last truly sovlful Sonic game. It is of course a glitchy, buggy mess but it's easy to look past that and just enjoy it. Not a fan of the DX version, they should have left the DC version alone.

& I love just wandering around Station Square and Mystic Ruins, both feel like the most beautiful and serene environments. It's a shame they weren't bigger.
