The hardware was decent to good in the aspects which mattered, and the games it had were not bad. Sega really did a good console that time, like with the Genesis, and people liked it while it was supported. It's a shame their finances were completely fucked and they had to throw in the towel.

If Sega had more money, they could have rode out 6th gen and the Dreamcast would have ended up with a pretty full fledged library with a lot of good hits, which could have stood pretty well against the PS2, might even have dwarfed Gamecube, and XBox might not even have existed with DC still in the picture. Likely there would have been hardware revisions with a quieter CD drive at some point too.

DC wasn't a flop. It was only on the market for about 18 months. Based on sales data, it was projected to sell 25 to 30 million units over four years. Similar to Sega Genesis sales.

The big problem was that Sega was in a very bad financial position (before they made the Sega Dreamcast). Sega had spent way too much money on the failed Saturn. The failure of the Saturn put Sega in a very very bad spot. They were in deep debt.

Sega actually didn't have enough money to make the Dreamcast, and took out loans just to build it. But Sega was still broke. The loans weren't enough to cover everything.
Sega literally didn't have enough money to stay in business after 18 months. By the end they weren't even sure they could pay employee salaries, or keep the lights on in their buildings. It was THAT bad.

Had the Dreamcast stayed on the market longer, Sega probably would have released a re-designed controller like they did with Genesis and Saturn. Probably with a more comfortable handle, and extra analog sticks for newer games that supported it.

Even in the 90's, it was "what Saturn should've been", and I mean that in a good way. Finally an actual 3D Sonic game, better multiplats like Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, and just overall better quality in general. Considering how badly the Saturn failed and how much it put Sega in debt, then yes. Sega should have just skipped a console generation and waited. They unironically would have been in a better financial position with the Dreamcast and not in massive debt.

>> No.10605034

The 64-bit and 128-bit values refer to the data bus width. Those values are only useful in determining how many bits of data can be transferred in a single bus cycle and have no relation to the size of address space. Address space size is determined by address bus width. Nothing is technically stopping a device with 16MB of RAM from having 64-bit memory address bus width, it's just really suboptimal because the upper 32-bits will never be used but still occupy space inside the chips and on the PCB. This is why no such designs exist in practice. Dreamcast uses 32-bit numbers as addresses, but its address bus width is only 29 bits, the upper 3 bits are used as flags and not actual address values (https://dreamcast.wiki/Memory_map).). It doesn't really need more than that. In fact, 24 bits is enough to address the whole 16MB of RAM, but realistically you'd also want some addresses for memory-mapped devices, so those 5 additional bits will come in handy.

>better than decent
I meant of individual qualities. Like how the controller was not excellent, but passable, or how the CD drive was kinda loud.
Overall, it was a good console, and like >>10604891 said, it wasn't a flop, it would probably have continued to do well in the market if Sega hadn't already gone into the red from previous flops (the 32X and Saturn).

They could have just continued making SEGA CD and 32X games which already had a decent install base, Genesis was still alive and well into the mid-90's (literally when I got mine) instead of moving onto a completely different platform.

>>10605035
Let's say for argument's sake they did skip the add-ons.
>Sonic CD is released as a regular cartridge game, no FMV opening, no CD soundtrack, probably recycled Special Stages from Sonic 1
>Knuckles Chaotix gets released as 'Sonic Crackers' with no 3D Special Stages or scaling effects
>Popful Mail and Snatcher get basic cartridge ports with no CD audio or voice acting
>Virtua Racing Deluxe uses the standard SVP cart
>no Virtua Fighter 32X
>no Shadow Squadron
>no Tempo
>no Ecco CD
It would have undoubtedly affected the development of the Saturn, but not necessarily in a good way. Without any experience using CD's, they may have even ended up going the Nintendo route and sticking with cartridges

1. Sega built an economical console that was both powerful, but also affordable for them to manufacture. They didn't just throw money at it like they did Saturn.

2. The internal design was streamlined. No more "dual CPU" nonsense.

3. GPU was first to have Anti-Aliasing resulting in very sharp and crisp video.

4. An actual Sonic game was made for this machine.

5. A real focus on game quality. Really great hits like Sonic, Power Stone, Read 2 Rumble, Crazy Taxi, amazing sports games, Marvel VS Capcom, arcade perfect ports, etc.

6. No silly add-ons like Sega CD or Sega 32x.

7. The online service for people to play multi-player

8. VMU had some cool features. For example in American football games, you could choose your plays on your controller screen. Your opponent can't peak anymore on split screen multi-player. It's all secret.

9. 4 controller ports to ensure maximum couch multi-player. Unlike PS2 which still only had 2 controller ports.

10. Amazing price at $199 retail

11. Optional Keyboard and mouse for first person shooter games.

12. Really cool Y2K anesthetic. And several cool collectible Dreamcast limited edition models.
