I got into Bomberman last year because my GF grew up with it and wanted to play it with me, Super Bomberman on SNES, we managed to beat it, moved onto Super Bomberman 2 but it had no cooperative mode, then Super Bomberman 3, but we could't beat the last world... it's been a while, maybe we should try the 4th or 5th one at some point. I also played an online fangame with some college friends a while back, don't remember the name, but it was lots of fun.

It's a superb franchise.

I always assumed these were just meant for multiplayer and that singleplayer was always you doing simple rounds on simple mazes, but I recently played Tournament and liked it quite a bit. I also learned about Quest and thought that was a pretty fun game. How many of these deviate from my original assumption? I'm not expecting something as big a jump as Tournament for a bunch of games, but anything more than the same thing as multiplayer but vs. CPU would be great.

Also Saturn Bomberman Fight (it's like a beat em up but you spam bombs instead), Bomberman Wars (chess tactical rpg type game), Pocket Bomberman (sidescrolling platformer), Bomberman Generation (a lamer version of SA2, but play it after that if you want more action-adventure bomberman games). Bomberman Land 3 is a pretty fun wacky exploration game where you collect stuff and costumize the white bomber/Shirobon, play a lot of mini-games and explore a park island and all of its areas... But it's only in japanese, so if you want to 100% or complete it you'll need some translator for the few word based things on it or do like me as a child and pass by dumb sheer luck to get the japanese stick in the right order.
Also i kinda want to play the Bomberman Jetterz after starting to watch the anime, hope it's fun.

I often think of Bomberman and Pacman in the same categories. Both series started out damn near flawless in concept with their gameplay, so much so that you can't even do anything similar without being called a ripoff but also the series doesn't know how to keep things fresh without just taking a left turn. Thinking like this makes me appreciate the likes of Mario more since it's easy to take for granted all the little things they had to get right to keep the series feeling fresh and building their own little world without anyone thinking it didn't make sense. Both Bomberman and Pacman have struggled on this end.
A lot of different attempts at building off of the original design and making some unique world as a foundation but nothing stuck. As soon as Bomberman got the multiplayer formula down that was peak design.
It's a shame that Bomberman has always seemed like always the bridesmaid, never the bride. Never quite getting the mainstream attention of other gaming icons even though everyone knows and probably has played a round of Bomberman.

The "1983 or 1985" argument was always retarded - literally the second game is "3-D Bomberman" so it's full-fledged Bomberman.
The main Hudson continuity didn't really start until the TurboGrafx-16 game in 1990, so really everything before then is in a weird pseudo-protypical phase.

The Jetters anime is great, and I enjoyed the GBA games, especially Densetsu no Bomberman where you play as Mighty. That game is essentially a sequel to Bomberman Tournament in terms of gameplay and its actually canon to the anime unlike the console game which is only loosely based off the show.
But I agree that the console game is not that good. Only got to the end of the first world before I dropped it.

R1? It's ok, it's just kind of lacking options in my opinion (No Louie's, right?).
If you're only playing with 1 roommate, I actually think the co-op experience is underrated. Most of the SNES bombermans has 2p co-op story mode, i think R1 does as well (i got sidetracked, R1 is actually has an ok co-op experience. R2 has none)
