Installing firmware updates on this thing has been a massive pain both times. This time I put the new firmware on the card and it bricked the device, the thing wouldn't turn on even if I took the sd card out or if I put it back in without the firmware update file. Eventually updated it with the recovery card (and because I'm visiting my mom for the holidays I only have one sd card so I had to copy all my roms and saves over to the pc first and then flashed the sd card), and it still wouldn't run until I put the new sd card base on the card (btw there's a new sd card update as well). Anyway now that I actually have it running I can talk about it.
They've massively improved the sd card reading. You can pop the card out while the device is running, add roms or update cores on it, and then put it back in and it just works. The downside is my device refuses to turn on if it has an sd card inserted while it's turned off but whatever.
They've added the ability to configure the fn button although it's weird as fuck. Like if you assign performance mode to it then it's going to be in performance mode when it's toggle to the left (I think) or power saving mode if it's to the right. If you assign power saving mode to it it does the exact same thing except reversed. LED toggle, quite and silent mode all work fine, haven't tried the turbo button toggles.
With the sd card update they've also added more emulators, including a saturn emulator. I tried it with bomberman saturn and in performance mode it ran well. Then I tried burning rangers and it ran like shit, so for 2d games it might be fine but it can't do 3d ones.

I bought an r36s based off these threads, had it for a week and I'm pretty happy with it, already beat a few smaller games. My only question is somewhat silly, does the function button actually do anything? From some googling it sounds like it's not even connected to anything.

RG353P has a DS emulator with touch screen in Linux CFW, but it's not reliable and limited to a single screen or two really small screens.

The D900 in the Odin Lite/RP4 can already play 80 - 85% of PS2 at fullspeed and 100% of GCN at fullspeed. I don't know for sure if the D1200 does 100% of PS2 or not these days, but it's definitely close if not. The D1100 in the RP4 Pro is supposed to be really close to that depending on the benchmark you're looking at/who you ask.

The exterior shape was really bad, too. The center was way too fat and the end of the cardinal points ended up feeling way too stubby. RG35XX Plus VS Trimui Smart Pro

Keeping in mind that they're both available to me at the same price.
I really like the RG35XX Plus but vertislop form factor is retarded.
At the same time i really like th Trimui Smart Pro's form factor but the SOC doesn't 100% support PSP, meaning that the widescreen is kind of unnecessary not to mention that Anbernic has a better track record with build quality.

I thinks this is because it will only recognize fat32 cards with the same file structure that the sd patch provides for some unknown reasons. Sometimes it looks like it bricked itself, but after a series of restarts with the correct card it will initialize correctly.

That happens if you didn't format the card to fat32 sadly. I did it too and now I have to either go back to fat32 which usually shits itself for no reason or keep the ntfs one with remove the card before starting up or never shutdown. Fortunately the sleeping feature works very well.

You may go for the anbernic if quality is a concern, I have already read a couple of persons who received bad units, but overall the number of fuckups is very low.

I just want to comment on the screen. I play most N64 and PSX games on "full screen" mode. You won't notice the difference honestly, and for racing games it looks very good. Playing F Zero X here is a great experience. While it cannot do 100% psp it can still do a lot of them like wipeout or FF 7 Crisis core. And since ppsspp is still very young and each year progress makes it run faster, I think it will be worth it for many psp games. But also GBA scales pretty well, you can play DS side by side, and may arcades take full advantage of the screen.

The worst aspect of this handheld is the OS, don't expect anything close to garlicos or arkos. But it's functional.

Fucked around with some of the new cores for the smart pro.
It got easyRPG, so you can play old rpgmaker games on it now.
It also got ffmpeg, so you can play videos. For some reason the first time I put a video file on the device it deletes it, and then I have to take the sd card out, put it on again, and then it works. Anyway, I tried an hd video and it was unwatchable, it's not capable of handling it. Then I lowered it's resolution to 480p and it ran mostly fine, still stuttered occasionally. Also tried the same video at 480p and a much lower bitrate and it still fumbled occassionally, so I think no matter what quality it is it's going to fuck up once in a while.

Jelos is nowhere near as good as onion os especially right now where wifi has been broken on their main branch for like 2 months. The latest 3566 release didn't work for my 353p at all and I had to roll back to nov 2022 before they got in the feud with Anbernic.

The bezel on it is huge. The plastic of the case feels cheaper than even the sf2000. It feels nice in the hands though, but not as sturdy as the mini. And not as snugly as the sf as it's quite a bit bigger than the sf.

It's definitely more comfortable over time than the MM+ -no hand cramping.

But still it could be better because the abxy buttons are wasting real estate and are smaller than the MM+.

The 353p to me is a weak implementation of a good idea.

They could have saved it by using an MM+ screen to keep the form factor.

Ranked worst to best, left to right.

"GC36" - The brown piece of shit with the screen that keeps popping off because it doesn't even fucking fit the mold. Worst screen, worst quality, least amount of NES games/hacks.
"GC35" - Red with the wifi-looking speaker design. Exactly the same quality and literally the same buttons as the GC36, except the screen fits and its size makes it a little less uncomfortable to hold.
My Arcade, "Go Gamer Portable" Model - It's neat for a famiclone, but the majority of the games are terrible edutainment java-quality games and the few NES games they do have on it have been "updated" to 16-bit graphics and usually have the wrong characters, like Kirby in Bubble Bobble or Goemon in this surfing game. The rubber d-pad performs well despite feeling awful on your thumb, and the outer shell has this sharp lip kind of like the DSlite/DSi that digs into your hands when holding it.
"GC27" - The best out of these "GC##" pieces of shit that I've tried, uses the same d-pad and face buttons as the two other GC## handhelds, but somehow can be held comfortably despite being smaller than the GC35. If these devices are numbered based on when they were made, it seems this company just got worse and worse with each new device.
The Famiclone - The one everyone knows well and sees everywhere. I like how light this thing feels, as if there are no internals at all. Never buy one at the $15-20 markup you see in North America, just get one from Aliexpress for $5.
"G5" Game Player - These come in tons of different models and designs, I only own this one because it was at Value Village for $3.99. It's only so high up because I like the shell designs, colours, and the circular d-pad works incredibly well. Also, it has a much better screen than all of the previous Famiclones mentioned, including "The Famiclone".

"Mini Game Player" - That thin famiclone. Strongest build quality, the flat d-pad and face buttons click oh-so-beautifully with the d-pad doing all eight directions flawlessly. Literally the only complaint I have about it is the giant, "GAME POWER" text on the right of the screen, it actually makes the screen off-center by a lot.
Retromax - One of Anbernic's first handhelds before they became Anbernic, and it's the best famiclone I have ever used. The d-pad and face buttons aren't nearly as nice as the slim "Mini Game Player" one, but the overall build quality feels like a nice GameBoy Pocket with shoulder buttons to rest your index fingers on (they both function as Turbo x2 buttons, you won't be using them outside of holding the device comfortably). Honourable mention to the chicken. I haven't opened mine but have played a friend's tiger variant. Like the slim "Mini Game Player" it has really nice, flat buttons and d-pad that just clicks perfectly. It's just really uncomfortable to hold due to its size and shape, especially with those tiny wings on the side being the Start and Select buttons. But they also hacked a lot of the NES games to replace the main character with a tiger or a cool chicken, depending on your model.

Overall, avoid My Arcade. Avoid these "GC##" models. If you want a famiclone, go with the basic bitch gameboy styled one that everyone sells everywhere, just buy it directly from Ali instead of paying the markup. Or if you want something a little nicer and don't mind spending $10-20 on these things, go for the RetroMax or one of the two-tone G5 models. The Mini Game Player slim one is really nice, but its slim form makes it uncomfortable to play for more than five minutes.

Also, loading a GBA/SNES rom, exiting, and opening it again is an uncommon issue with a lot of hardware AND software, it usually comes down to the game wanting to load more shit into the RAM than the device's read/write speed can handle, so loading, exiting, and re-opening a game solves that. - Prince of Persia, something I play from time to time
- Front Mission Gun Hazard. Flawed game but I can zoom out while grinding.
- Resident Evil. I think I will drop this one too, too much backtracking and I'm not in the mood of killing frogs.
- The occasional f-zero x, mario kart, crash team racing match.
- Something I grab every now and then, Super Mario Bros 1, Dragon Ball Advance Adventures, Shiren the Wanderer and Torneko something something (great roguelikes, recommended). I - Still need to finish Klonoa, I'm in the last world. I was impressed by Spyro but there isn't much to it.

In the process I discovered several games that I had high expectations but weren't that good. A shame but eventually I will amass a good collection of great roms to play and replay if I haven't killed myself by then.

I was pretty shocked by how many of my PC games ended up having 16:10 options. Probably at least 30% of my library, and that's with virtually all my games being from nip devs who are obviously way worse about offering these kinds of things. The greatest benefit tho is when emulating 4:3 games, or playing older PC games that are 4:3. You get way more game display area compared to a 16:9 screen of the same size.

You still have to do the bootloader patch (just once) before hand.
