Recap;
Anbernic is a joke but buy the RG35XX+ if you don't have the RG35XX or Miyoo Mini+ yet.
Steam Deck owners on suicide watch.
Analogue Pocket owners finally accepted as not the worst.
Phone posters have taken over, chinkhelds are on an hero watch.
Only GKD and Retroid are okay and doing fine at the moment.

Good, the 353p was the handheld I wanted before the trimui smart pro appeared. Cheaper and has a bigger screen, but no 3 buttons I'm afraid.

How do you like this screen? The handheld must be the most ergonomic thing released so far.

Oh, we've only just begun... by the end of 2024 ALL of you will have given up on your handhelds, replaced by the very smartphones you all have in your pockets right now! MUAHAHAHA
So, jokes aside, what are you guys playing? I'm on Master System Bonanza Bros. I finished it, but I want to do it on the hardest settings now. It's an interesting version since it's the only one without cooperative, which in a way makes it the worst, but also the best for single-player since you get the full screen to play on, while you only get half of it, even when playing alone, on all other ones.

I would suck so much dick for some other chinks to make a clone with the same screen because holy fucking shit, I love that screen. GB/GBC looks amazing on it, 8:7 SNES looks amazing on it. I legit haven't played this much SNES in years and I've discovered a shit ton of games I hadn't played before.

Eh, even though Link's Awakening has a lot of whatever it is called when you exchange one item for another item, to exchange that item for another item, something that is best done for extra or side content rather than the main story, Link's Awakening has far better story and gameplay than ALttP. I'd rather play Graal Online with all of its original hiccups and frustrations than play a Link to the Past again. Meanwhile I adore Oracle of Seasons, Oracle of Ages, and a Link Between Worlds. ALttP just aged like milk. Strong on release but quickly soured due to literally anything after it within its own franchise. Even on the og black and white version of Link's Awakening after wanting the special GBC coloured version but not getting it, I tenfold empathized with Marin than the entirety of the fucking LttP cast let alone all of the princesses which none of you can fucking name, admit it, you don't remember ANY of their names besides Zelda.

Well at least I know you're an old fag, but I will never understand why anyone ever argued that LttP was an RPG. One of my earliest frustrations on GameFAQs back in the day.
Nothing about LttP makes it an RPG. Modern Call of Duty with is leveling system is more of an RPG than LttP ever was.

This but MM+. It's so much more portable, which is ideal for me, and I'd much rather play most new games at home on my PC with much better frame rate/resolution/quality. That just leaves a handful of Nintendo exclusives that I wouldn't be able to play without my Switch, but yuzu is surprisingly good already. So I don't think I've touched it once since I got my MM+. RG280V is the bestest GBA SP / FAMICON inspired handheld there will ever be.

I know the v90 has a better form factor regarding the clamp clasp, but it feels too light and cheap to the touch.

The rg280v feels utterly sturdy, has weight to it, and overall could be a special edition official Nintendo product, a premium one.

It does not get enough praise and respect.
I am exactly one year into mine, since I got it for Christmass last year around this date, and I have not been able to put it down. It is amazing for RPG playing with a single hand.

Yes it can get tiresome holding it close to your face with both hands, like I had to do with the GBA SP, but it is tiny enough I can control it with a single hand,to rest one arm at a time... like I had to do with the GBA SP.

I insist, specially when it comes to retro devices, you do not have to break bank in order to have something nice, I believe the concept should be one of nice cheap devices, not luxurious items for collectors...

As a cheap Chinese handheld, this is superb quality for a endearing chibi, kawaii, device.

No, at least not that I've heard of... almost ALL of them have the asymmetrical layout that XBOX is known for making truly popular... the closest you CAN is either using an actual controller that uses the traditional layout, with a grip to attach it and connect it to your smartphone, or a controller in which both analog thumbsticks are on the top, so the Wii U layout really, which is still symmetrical.

I wanted a telescopic controller to make it feel as if it was a single piece with my smartphone, so an actual handheld at least in feeling, there were so few options though. I went with a MOCUTE-060.

I've had it for a few months now, since late April this year, and despite the battery indicator being buggy, the battery's thankfully fine and it works for me, at least I find it comfortable to use still.

No, I'm using a Samsung Galaxy M30 from 2019, I've replaced it early this year due to its battery failing on me in a few ways, it still worked, but I could see it didn't have much time, and it was so much slower at that point too, but I didn't want to just leave it somewhere to collect dust, so I've turned it into a handheld, but it's still just a mid ranger from 2019, so the best it does well is PSP.

A few, very few PS2 ROMs run well too, but the strongest system it does consistently well, but failing sometimes too, is PSP, it only does 99% of titles well with 5th generation console hardware.

I still enjoy this setup though, since I barely feel like playing anything newer anyways, though I'll admit sometimes I want to play PS2 and I can't in this, but on top tier smartphones it's a non issue.

In terms of the GPU, the developer says Adreno graphics offers better performance than Mali or PowerVR GPUs found in MediaTek, HiSilicon, and older Samsung Exynos processors. However, the creator adds that you should stick to the Vulkan graphics renderer option if you’ve got a phone powered by a Mali GPU (e.g., Exynos, Kirin, or MediaTek processor), as it’s generally faster than OpenGL. Some games might perform better with OpenGL, though."

I talked about it before but I went to the dentist and was playing it. Didn't realize that I left it on and put it in my small backpack and idk... after that it never worked again. I tried a second kishi and nothing, idk. Lately I was thinking I may have been messing around with UAD that day and potentially debloated something that was necessary for it but thats doubtful Cuz Ive tried everything else. I think honestly though that the port might have just been damaged or something. The kishi will turn on briefly if I press it in kind of hard but yeah.... still connects and charges though. Pissed. It worked perfectly for a year before that and Ive yet to habe anything where the ergonomics were so comfy. The G8 when it arrives will be a real test because if I did damage the port then maybe the G8 won't work. But the g8 usb flexes. Idk... its kind of a fuckin mystery to me. I did read online thoufh that a subset of folka had the same issue where it just stopped working one day. Where it similarly turns on and then off.

He probably got one from a good batch. Mine came with a dpad that's responsive enough out the box (so no need to loosen that screw holding it) and the buttons don't double-click (checked in various games, they're still connected and you can see the opposite side button moving slightly upon a press, but it never registers), bought maybe two weeks ago? The Chinese keep updating this shit constantly. Then again, they also cut costs constantly. Mine came without a rumble motor, even though the device supports vibration and the early batches had it. There's a clear spot on the board for it and I guess I could always solder one in, but yeah.

PS. I've had a good experience with a lot of games running at an enjoyable speed when it comes to the Dreamcast, but PSP emulation is fucking weird, seems to be random. Some 3D games run full speed, others are unplayable. Some 2D ones run fine, others are skipping frames like there's no tomorrow. Patchwork Heroes plays like shit (great game btw.), Tactics Ogre is unplayable. Tekken 5 DR can be made to play smoothly, Tekken 6 struggles. No rhyme or reason to it. I probably won't bother with PSP, way too random, ain't got time for that.

Nice. Are you giving them as is (stock) or updating them with newest ArkOS, setting up emulators (including BIOS files), coming up with separate rom lists per each particular kid's interests or what? I guess if you set up one of them it's a matter of simply cloning the cards, but plenty of work nonetheless. Stock cards would ideally need to get replaced too (shit quality, will die sooner rather than later), but dunno if you wanna be arsed with that, plus there's an additional cost included of course.

PS. Look up the Dreamcast region-free BIOS, japanese_cake v1.032, very slight speed boost on some games.

Those things were clones of the PocketGO, which itself was a clone of the GCW Zero.

Anbernic RG350 series was also a GCW Zero clone, and they're up to doing much better things now.

GCW Zero was a Kickstarter attempt to revive what GamePark did with the GP2X / Wiz / Caanoo; open source handheld that had its own homebrew environment and some commercial releases (but realistically most people used it for emulators).
A few of the dedicated GCW Zero apps like the Unnamed Monkey Game demo would run on the GCW Zero clones.

Honestly I'm glad we've moved beyond the days of OpenDingux handhelds, build quality and ergonomics have generally improved too.
The scene is still heavily reliant on the volunteer work of people making working firmwares where the Chinese hardware manufacturers just don't.

I don't really know anything about modern handheld games. She doesn't want a switch, but she needs a screen bigger than like a gameboy. I googled and saw a ton of handheld emulators but they all had mixed reviews.

Not 100% sadly.
Out of the box the experience with chinkhelds is usually just "ok", some do come preloaded with games.

But generally you want to throw away the sd card that came with it, then format flash a branded SD card with CFW (or just roms depending).

You may also need to get into emulator settings to tweak things to your liking, default settings can be not optimal a lot of times.

That said, it's not hard, and there's tons of step by step videos that teach you how to do it for all these handhelds.

Yeah I got one, the face buttons are utterly sensational. Not quite as good as the real thing in part because they're a bit smaller and the feel of the press is just a touch off, but pretty easily my favorite face buttons I've ever used on a handheld. The travel is just about perfect, the shape of the ABC are just about perfect, the curve/arrangement is perfect, and the thunk and mashability when actually pressing them is superb. I've seen one guy say he found mashing them wore his thumb out, but that's certainly not the case for me at least. Also while I said the buttons are a little smaller than on real MD\SS controllers, they're still by far the biggest face buttons I've ever seen on a handheld I've owned, including the Steam Deck. The XYZ buttons are just flat rather than convex on MD/SS controllers, but they still feel great.

No. Minui doesn't have a filter or favorites option built in. Shaun Inman is too much of a hipster to implement a simple file list filter in the UI. Which is crap if you're using a large rom set.

>>10539814

Minui is simple - but Trimui pulled some shit where they required the update files to have a different name on the Trimui model S - so Minui stopped supporting the device, where as the GDMenu guys simply renamed their update file for that device and moved on. Also if you try to do the update on a newer model S rolling back to 1.05 as the github recommends it now gives you a white screen, so I actually had to roll the OS back to 1.06 and figure out the renaming trick for myself because its mentioned nowhere in github, but the GDMenu guys put it in their readme. Stock is almost better than both in terms of usability at this point - but doesn't have the better rom/emulator optimizations.

It is not only not retard proof, on some devices, it's actually difficult for regular people.

Also unlike OnionOS - MinUI uses its own folder tree instead of adapting to stock, so you have to move your files to each directory. The whole thing is a showcase of great implementation and bad usability choices at the same time.

First of all if I were you I spend maybe a week reading threads like this one or watching youtubers to get a foothold. Eventually you will recognize brands, firmwares, and whatnot. IF you don't do this, you are wasting your money.

Second, you may buy a handheld and do all the customization yourself, which is probably the best idea. Or you may buy them preinstalled but they are more expensive, usually the software is obsolete and under performs, the sd cards are slow and breaks in a couple of months, and they feature thousands of games with no filters.

Just to give you an idea I'll drop some famous youtubers reviewing popular products, but give it time and do your research.

Also, your sword, shield, gloves, armor, quiver, arrows, etc - all upgrade in LttP. The upgrades are permanent stat increases. You don't have to worry about losing your better armor and having to replace it.

And again, not all TTRPGs have character improvement as the default option. See Mutants and Masterminds. It's not uncommon for that to be run as stock PL10, with no expectation of getting more points or moving up to PL11.

PL10 is the default power level recommended in the main book, to which most of the sample pregens are also built. Try again. Thats their "typical super hero" tier. Lower tiers are for street level supers like Daredevil, who are not the avengers, or regular people. The expectation is that the PL is picked by the DM for the type of campaign they want to run, and it stays that way. This is not D&D where anyone "starts at level 1". After the super heroes get their powers and learn to use them, they genwrally stay the same power level unless some plot event super charges them. Like in comic books. A lot of them follow the static powered batman formula. Sometimes theres an arc where they power up though story events, and aometimes that becomes the new status quo - while others it gets reset to their old PL.

Either way, PL10 is the recommended campaign level for typical superhero stuff, and other PLs aren't 'I leveled up as is always expected' it's an optional rule or it's the GM deciding to shift the campaign to a higher scale of conflict.

TTRPGs do not necessarily have to have 'nunbers go up', let alone discrete character levels that go up.

If the hearts and new moves makes LttP an ARPG, then the honeycombs and new moves makes Banjo-Kazooie an ARPG.
Zelda's objectively and definitively an Action Adventure game. Especially with how you go about obtaining that extra health and new abilities. If you just systematically receive experience by grinding, no matter what, it's likely an RPG. If you have to complete a specific task to get a specific upgrade needed to progress, it's likely an adventure game. Pokemon has both with their HM bullshit but you primarily advance from leveling and experiencing, so it's an RPG. It'd be an adventure game if you removed the fighting.

No, there is no "number comparison" in game code for required object/ability X to continue past/interact with object Y unless a person decides to program it that way for some retarded reason. No, this is purely a generational problem where Gen Z and Common Core has taught them that anything can mean anything but everything is also a black and white binary. These genres are defined, but video games can cross over or have elements of several, much like music or movies but to far more degrees, or even be experimental and not fit within any previously defined genre and trying to shoehorn them into one is idiotic.
But the entire Zelda series is demonstrably an Action Adventure series, always has been. It's an adventure game with action in it. That's it.

I thought it was about wanting to play the games combined with a particular kind of hardware autism, not just a display piece.

I wouldnt mind getting my kid a nice emulator handheld (one with a read only system partition for when he lets the batteries die or shuts it off with the power button). Especially if it had bluetooth and minihdmi out that he can't corrupt with a hard shutdown though. (That might have to be a custom pi build or something, but he's only 1, so I have a bit of time to figure that out). Definitely want to get him something nicer (and more child-proof) than the cheap v90 I have; but I don't really care about original hardware. My carts are mostly gone and I'm not going to shell out to replace them, and I'm not going to Ben Heck a handheld playstation with a CD drive like it's 2005 to play my PS1 discs on the go.

I wonder when more chinkhelds will adopt OLED displays. There's still good LCD displays for 1080p, but AFAIK the only companies that have them are Ayaneo at 1080p/5.5 inches and Anbernic with repurposed Vita displays on the RG505.

In aLttP you crawl dungeons, talk to npcs and visit towns to buy new stuff. Solve quest coming from specific npcs to acquire new items/money, improve your mana and hearts, improve your equipment and acquire new spells, explore the overworld which connects towns, dungeons, forests, castles, mountains to each other. I guess people may not like the label because:
-Nowadays rpg implies "strength, agility, wisdom, etc" because board games have them too instead of the reason why you'd have them to begin with.
-Nintendo has a way to cheese established genres to make them more appealing to the public. If you love rock music, you don't like to think that some sellout commercial music is doing rock too because that would be sacrilegious, so you call it "pop rock" or a different label to make the differences more apparent in spite of the similarities.

Yes, Zelda is not a hardcore rpg but definitely it is what it is not thanks to the "action adventure" genre. Zelda has more in common with Dragon Quest than castlevania or metroid. But again I think it's more a matter of trying to not look "hardcore" at all at a time when RPGs had a big following and hardcore fans.

Paradoxically Miyamoto minimizes the role of rpg in zelda, but I don't think he is completely right.

>Miyamoto: For some people, Zelda is an adventure game in the guise of an RPG. For others, it’s an adventure game in the guise of an action game. The latter might not be able to get away from the preconception that they have to use the strongest weapon to fight the boss.

>Adventure games and RPGs are games where you advance the story through dialogue alone, but we wanted players to actually experience the physical sensation of using a controller and moving the character through the world. We wanted dungeons to be explorable with a simple mapping system. These and similar ideas were what we wanted to experiment with in Zelda. These themes are carried forward in the SFC Zelda as well.

>The Zelda series has never used the word “RPG”. The way I see it, there are some light RPG elements to Zelda—like the fact that your character grows in power as the game progresses—but that’s it. If we expanded on those elements, my sense is that it would be taking the game in the wrong direction.

>In the Zelda series, Link does get stronger as you progress through the game, but that was done in order to to help players who are bad at action games. We wanted the game to get easier as Link gets stronger. In particular, in Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, you can increase your attack, magic, and life to level 8, but I actually wanted to make it go to level 16. I wanted it to be easier.

Horii: The first time I played The Legend of Zelda, I remember thinking “Now this is what an action RPG is supposed to be!” In a pure RPG, you level up via the experience you gain in battles. In The Adventure of Link you level up each time you clear a dungeon, I believe? I admired that choice.

Retroid devices on particular has a setup wizard the first time you power up the device which let you install or not some programs or services but all the android chinkhelds have a pure android rom

>> No.10543498

>>10543341
Chinkhelds are tinkering devices first and foremost, with Android ones being less plug and play than Linux. Tweaking is expected out of 6th gen and above and N64 sometimes, some assembly required for Retroarch and frontends too which if you're not familiar with can be a bit of a hurdle. Retroid's build has some nice features like holding down L3 and R3 to enable virtual mouse mode which binds swipe down to the sticks, letting you open the quick menu and change brightness without touching the screen.

Strongly recommend not buying a chinkheld until there's a decent sample size in the wild. Also, these chips are likely to still come short in some 6th gen emulation, so might want to move up to UMPCs if you need something more reliable.

There's that newish wizard NES game you can buy on steam. It was actually a lot of fun. But yeah, the vast majority of indie pixel games will be too demanding in system specs for your little handheld. They're generally designed to run on at least like, a 10-15-year old windows laptop.

Yoshi's Story looked like total fucking trash though, which is bizarre after how good the DKC games looked on the SNES. I realize Yoshi's Story wasn't made by Rare but you would think Nintendo would be able to make it look half alright. It should have just been 3D like Kirby was on the N64.

Oh. Agreed. It's a bunch of extra effort that's unlikely to earn you any extra money. Like, Micro Mages is *cool* but I have no motivation to copy them, and I suspect the same goes for most other people making games (especially if theyre a studio).

This page exists to catalogue all publicly known information about the Watara Supervision, the ill fated "budget" Gameboy competitor. It was released in 1992 and was distributed by different manufacturers in different regions. Reasons often cited for why the console failed include a poor quality screen and a lack of quality games available, particularly a lack of recognisable titles from Japaenese and American developers.

Despite the system's failure, we still love it on this website thanks to it's occasional redeeming factors, quirky nature and treasure trove of obscure facts. So get ready to dive into one of history's weirdest consoles!

the reason these things can't run new games is because they use an ARM CPU instead of X86, so they are fundamentally incompatible with PC software. ARM is used by Android, so if you get a console that uses Android you can play mobile games, but Miyoo uses Linux. technically you could port open source games but that's a nightmare.

the only new games you will be able to play are those made for Pico-8, or romhacks for old consoles.

>>10544681
That’s what I saw too. I’m sure the Ace Combat games don’t play too nice with it either, and KH2FM is gonna be up in the air but I’m going to just assume that one’s gonna have some issues. Apparently KH1 does fine though.
>>10544685
Oh I know, it has a Dreamcast/GC emulator on there that apparently both work fine. It sounds like it can even do some switch games, but I don’t really care about that.

Whelp, .hack is sadly busted. For whatever reason the graphics are “see through”. I’ve actually never seen a graphical glitch like it. It’s like it turned the models inside out but not all the way so some parts are always facing the camera and others aren’t. Gonna try a couple others and see if that’s just an older game that uses some weird rendering technique that’s messing things up. Sucky thing is it plays buttery smooth.. it just doesn’t work graphically.

Nice.
Reminds me of when I used to bring my PSOne around with the LCD screen attachment.

Or a bit like an adventure pi. (Pic rel)

Years ago I saw a similar project setup using a chonky toolbox as a LAN Party desktop meant for being more conveniently lugged around in your car. To much of a power guzzler to run on battery like the Adventure Pi, of course.

I think Ben Heck build an XBox Laptop, at one point, too. I think that's still portable enough. Haha.

I'm a bit of a weirdo. I think my ideal portable game system form factor is a laptop with a gamepad, and putting it on a table; but I do appreciate a clamshell design when I need something more lightweight than that. So far everything is running like a dream, but I’m definitely going to need to get a controller for 3d games. The screen is a nice size, but the overlay makes things look a little cluttered and I find myself fumbling with the touchscreen controls. My friends got a backbone so I’ll try that out and see how it is but so far this is pretty darn nice. If the games I care about keep playing this good I might go ahead and skip out on the Retroid Pocket 4 and wait for the next iteration.

I should qualify that - its possible the "vast majority" might be too demanding, if they're made in prebuilt engines like unity or unreal. But most good pixelshit games are written in systems languages like C or assembly or even Godot, and come in small packages <70mb and are often readily portable, hence the portsmaster ports.

https://github.com/christianhaitian/PortMaster

You can probably run Stardew on the Miyoo - someone just has to get around to porting it.

So after downloading many rom sets, mainly NES and arcade, even if my SD card is big enough I have came into the conclusion that having the entire library is super stupid and it really gets into my nerves that it takes ages for scrap the box arts and even so not everything is scraped correctly, I will trim both game lists to just 50 or so
I should probably do the same with the other systems

Yes, its considered the same gen. There is no android emulator but I think there is a PC emulator for it. I use the "done set" but only for the NES and SNES roms. I like the fact of having their entire library in my pocket and even some bootleg and homebrew stuff I play every so often due to the filesize of the systems.

Library hoarding more than 4 systems on your device seems stupid imo. You should have the romsets on your pc and pick what you really want to play and not saturate the device with junk

Is the backbone worth the 100 bucks?
So far the A54 is actually performing above my expectations. KH2FM is very playable with the only slowdown on 2x happening during cutscenes with that “blurry” effect, or during over the top QTE’s, and even then they are minimal.

Still, playing on critical with a touchscreen is PAIN. Considering I got the phone for “free” I figure I could swing the $100 if the controller is actually as good as the hype makes it out to be.

EH, not quite, OLED does have meaningful differences from LCD beyond the name and how its constructed aka manufactured. Sure, It can burn out, but what makes you think that it has to burn out in 5 years or so, Hmm? There are factors such as leaving the Deck on for too long in one sitting, beating and throwing it physically, leaving it exposed to direct sunlight, problems during manufacturing process of one's Deck, or poking the screen like an utter retard.
Also, 30g less? That's true, but don't see how its a "done to the bone Mr skeleton" situation.
