Only Capcom fighters I think could properly be called "overrated" are Third Strike and MVC2 for how they're hailed as "goat" but with no real reasoning as to why they're better than other games beyond parroting, or non-reasons like "good graphics" and "lots of characters"

I will say, Darkstalkers tends to attract a lot of the "casual fans" who don't really play but just like the characters, but it's not overrated as a game at all and hardly gets its due considering it's a dead/forgotten franchise hardly anybody plays anymore. I actually like how Darkstalkers is somewhere in between the more methodical pace of SF and the hyperactive "tons of shit going on" pace of Marvel, it's hyper without being batshit, it's a good middle ground and I enjoy it for that.

Darkstalkers is cool, I finally watched the OVAs though and it was pretty abysmal. Out of fighting game anime movies I would say all the Fatal Furys > SF2 movie > Tekken > Darkstalkers = SFA movie. Still haven't seen Samurai Shodown or AoF

Cant speak for mvc2, but third strike is goated because it's the only fighting game to go all in on its parry design. No whiff animation, only like 18 frames of lockout after a failed parry, instant start up on the parry, great frame advantage from landing one, and a fairly generous 8 frame window to land it made the technique so powerful as to completely change up the gameplay compared to every other street fighter. All other fighting games, including subsequent street fighters, are scared to have a parry that is that powerful and nerf it in every possible way. The extremely dominant third strike parry takes a game like street fighter where the same situations occur over and over, and introduces an exciting element of chaos where the tides of the match can change at any moment due to said parry. The game actively and severely punishes doing the same thing over and over again, regardless of whether or not it's the "optimal" thing to do, and the parry helps even the playing field between the top tier and the bottom tier a bit(if only a bit). Its all up to individual taste at the end of the day, but there's an explanation as to the game's appeal.

MVC2 is the best casual fighting game there is and I will stand by that. If your only measure of quality is competitive then yeah it's overrated as fuck. But at a casual level it beats out almost any other fighter.

Not saying playing casually is inherently better, I've been in tournaments and enjoy that kind of play too and often prefer it. But the energy MVC2 has is great for a different type of mood.

I agree that Darkstalkers is a really nice inbetween though. No other game quite has the same pace, I love how fast one round starts after the last one ends. Only part of the game I'm iffy about is how pushblock works but it's kind of fun in its own hectic chaotic way, so I can at least appreciate it for what it is.
