How playable is Half-Life on DC? I heard it has quite a lot of bugs and perfomance issues.

every dreamcast game that runs over windows ce has performance problems

I saw a gameplay of it once and it seemed to perfectly emulate low-end PC experience from the 90s that I've had growing up. Not recommended.

It's shit and pretty much only a novelty. It's obvious why that port was eventually cancelled, even if it was advertised heavily in every magazine back then. If you're too lazy to download and play it, there's probably several youtube videos about it

>> No.10537668

play the ps2 version if you want a console port

>> No.10537692

IIRC the only serious issue is that it requires more VMU space each time you save or something like that. Other than that it plays fine.

I recently played it through pcsx2 and on pc through the 25th anniversary.

Its better on pcsx2 because you can sit back and use a controller and you can up the internal res at a little bit above 1080p while using the wave filter so it feels as intended back in the day but better. Unfortunately, when trying to cross to XEN, pcsx2 kept me on an eternal loading screen and even though I was using the latest daily version a week ago, I couldnt go through and there were no tutorials on how to fix the problem, so I installed the 25th anniversary pc version and started playing the XEN part in 4K. The lack of crt like filters hurts this game big time.

It's extremely rough and the load times are very long. Try it as a novelty I guess, I think the last time I messed around in it I got to blast pit and checked out from the load times. The ps2 version is a great time from start to finish.

so, valve ported this game, but Dreamcast was already dying, and no one cared anymore. Then the port was leaked to the Internet, and he needed a lot of optimization

Did they ever fix the saving bugs or crash from the Dreamcast version?

>> No.10542813

it can crash fairly often, but it's not a big issue if you save regularly. but the issue with saving is the saves are huge and essentially need their own dedicated memory card.
the load times are quite long from a disc but not as bad with a GDEMU.
if you have an ideal setup, a dedicated memory card, an ODE, a keyboard and mouse...the novelty quickly wears off as you're just playing half-life on something that doesn't run it very well. you'll probably get bored and either want to stop playing, or go play a better version of it.
the PS2 version doesn't have that "cancelled game" allure, but if you want to play half-life on a console, it's much more functional.
