How the fuck did FPS games get released on this? Do you move with the color buttons? They're so far apart.

Have any of you had the displeasure of experiencing this?

>> No.10534635

Have you played any N64 shooter ever?

>> No.10534638

You do yes. I tried playing the unreleased half life port, it was an interesting experiment but definitely not something I'd do again.

You could connect a keyboard and a mouse to a DC bro, how do you think we browsed the Internet? Quake III was based, you could create custom control schemes to fit your needs. Have a mouse, but no keyboard? Not a problem, gamepad plus mouse, there you go.

Just a shame it had to be a Dreamcast-specific KB+M. PS2 was much more forward thinking in that department. The regular controller having two sticks also made it less necessary.

>> No.10534676

The DC's controller is problematic for its lack of buttons, not necessarily due to its lack of analog sticks.

>> No.10534683

The face buttons acting as WASD with the analog stick for aiming actually worked pretty well in the Dreamcast ports of Unreal Tournament and Quake III.

How can you move with dpad if it's right next to the analog? Do both your hands grip the left side of the controller? How can you use the color buttons to shoot then?

The strafing is annoying due to the shoulder buttons being in the wrong place. They don't need be too high like on others but they didn't need to be that low either.

I might try the other controller for it someday but there are only maybe 3 games I still wanna try for it

Also don't like it only having 1 joystick

He's still half right ps2 fps were twice as fun because of the controls

I guess if you all have a bad controller it's OK because everyone has a similar handicap or just use the $300 - $500 mouse and keyboard

Or just get a ps2 and stop overpaying

Playing a shooter means both problems are apparent. It's great when games lent into it though. Like in fur fighters you only had two actions (shoot and jump) so anything interactive is piloted using giant cartoon yellow buttons.

If they actually did, then there would be a third party controller that does it by now, and the newest DC controller I know of don't have a second stick.

In those days, keyboard+mouse was the default controls for FPS. Took me a long while to adapt to dual analog, as I still preferred keyboard+mouse for FPS since it just seems I am more accurate and proficient in the games even though movement was not analog with the WADS buttons. Just like how I prefer the Sega Saturn pad for almost all fighting games, even though most people prefer joystick, mouse+keyboard for FPS is just right to me even though most of the best players use Xbox controllers.

Yeah, you used the face buttons to move and strafe, analog to aim, should buttons to shoot and jump. d-pad for switching weapons.

It worked great, Quake 3 on DC was loads of fun, it even supported split screen multiplayer (and network compatibility with the PC version for a little while until the PC version got too far in patches).

For the record, the Saturn had this too.

Depends on the game. Goldeneye and Perfect Dark let you approximate modern FPS controls with the 1.2 control layout, when you put your left hand on the dpad and right hand on the analog stick. Turok insists on using the C buttons for movement though, which feels ass-backwards if you're used to using your left hand for movement and right for aiming.

>> No.10538582

Aim with the joystick
Move forward with the top Green button
Back with the red
strife left or right with yellow and blue
should buttons are the trigger and reload
D-pad are the optional buttons for action, switch weapon.
Jumping would be the difficult part to figure out.

>> No.10538652

MDK2 (I know, it's a TPS but still was a shooter) had this control scheme. The shoulder buttons were jump for L and shoot for R. Weapons would be switched with dpad.

>so I can only use the mouse and keyboard to play the FPS games in singleplayer, where the PC originals will still have a superior experience
>only other game that really uses the mouse+keyboard is PSO, and it's considered a subpar version compared to some other port
I still can't figure out why the price of the mouse+keyboard has gone from $30 for the set to $50 each when there is no real use for them.
