Solar bit flips are real and happen now and then across the digital spectrum. Had it happen on a PC once that was running an NES emulator, and instead of breaking something, it fixed it, so it can cut both ways.

I use RetroArch for pretty much everything, but then again you still have to use specific cores within it, mine are:

Anyway, chill out mods, getting back to the thread. I abandoned Retroarch after a year or two of using it and have never looked back:

Gamecube: Dolphin (duh)

Use my MiSTer and its cores more than any software emulators though.

The best ones according to EmuGen. I only just learned that PCSX2 has had some real fucking progress and now it'll basically run any game you through at it if you use the nightly branch.

I use Duckstation, PCSX2, PPSSPP, mGBA and Desmume. Want to try new ones (RPCS3, Dolphin, Ryujinx, whatever N64 emulator is good), but I'm lazy to start messing with new shit, as it took a long time to get used to the ones I already use to the point it becomes natural.

Dolphin and N64 emulators like RMG/Ares are pretty much plug-and-play with minimal need to mess with settings.
RPCS3 and Ryujinx are yeah, bit more elbow grease involved until they work properly.

I still encounter slow downs and visual oddities quite frequently with some games I've played but must admit it has come quite far now.

It's more satisfying and a more useful hobby than just playing games, so I will happily agree that I don't try to just autistically consoom as many games as possible as efficiently as possible.

Going by how old-fashioned the retro community is, I would expect this to be an even more common mindset desu. If anything, I'm surprised so many people use more "recent" emulators. A few posts above, when people were arguing about RMG for political reasons, I fully expected someone to defend Project64 or something.

When you played these games twenty-something years ago at most you'd blow the dust off the cartridge, and that was it. You didn't have to replace damaged cables, you didn't have to resolder blown capacitors, you just played the game, and that's the goal of emulators. Restoring old tech is an honorable hobby but it certainly isn't a core part of liking retro games.

You most certainly did have to do maintenance on your hardware, especially if you were into PC gaming back then. Even barring PC hardware, I had to repair my n64 and ps1 while they were current.

You can try the archive, but its pretty straight forward if you have an actual disk. Sony didn't encrypt until PS3 and even that has been broken.

I've noticed that it runs certain games faster on weaker computers with the ParaLLEl plugins like Conker's Bad Fur Day while in RA on the same PC it runs like total garbage.

managing all of those emulators is a headache and it's so much easier just to group them into retroarch since they all auto update and have the same controller settings
