>Releases to positive or average reviews but poor sales
>Still enough attention and praise to receive a spin-off and a direct sequel
>Known during the 2000s as a classic example of a 2D series failing to translate into 3D
>Finally sit down and play MML1 this year
>It's fucking great
>Misadventures of Tron Bonne and MML2 are just as good, if not even better.
>Now have to lament the cancellation of MML3

What gives? How did a series this charming, fun and soulful manage to get such a bad rap over the years? Don't tell me its just people being filtered by the tank-y controls.

I had a similar experience playing the legends series a few years ago. They skyrocketed to being some of my favorite megaman games.

Once I powered through the honestly kinda shitty ufo battle at the start of the first game, where the bonnes are attacking the bank or whatever they were doing, I started to gel with the controls. The further I got in the more I realized they actually did understand the limitations of the control scheme and designed EVERYTHING around that. Jumping and rollerblading feel great, and combat is fun even if it's usually pretty simple (though I did restrain myself from buying defense upgrades to keep things more tense, I've heard the game is really easy if you get those).

A lot of people will put a game down fast if they cant control it well quickly. The unique control schemes that make fifth gen games so interesting to me are exactly what puts off a lot of people.

I do wonder if Megaman 64 has something to do with its reputation. Despite everything I said above about adapting to control schemes, the N64 version of the game controls pretty damn bad. It just doesn't feel good to play, at least compared to the PS version, and I grew up with and love the N64 system so I'd consider myself unbiased against a version of the game on that system. Megaman 64 just doesn't feel good to play.

I think 1 is the more consistent game while 2 has higher highs and lower lows. Overall I like 2 a little bit more. 1 seems like the more popular game overall, which I can understand because it does a lot of things very well. 1 seems like the more replayable game, so if I'd grown up with them I think I'd prefer that one.

Tron Bonne is just a repetitive busywork simulator with one good minigame (the big robot). People just pretend to like it for the Tron sprites.
MML2's story is all over the place compared to MML1, without a satisfying conclusion (because sequelbait), and it removed all items from dungeons so instead of getting new weapons and equipment while exploring them (like in MML1), you now have to grind for Zenny to buy them from scrap stores. Might as well not even have dungeons.
MML1 is the most polished game of the three.

this right here. this is one reason why you aren't seeing a MML3.

now, if you're a grown ass man and cute things are a selling point for you, that's your business. i don't care if you piss or go fishing. also this post could be sarcasm. however, i think it's still worth pointing out because even if this post is sarcasm, there are people for whom this statement is true: if it's cute, if it's "weebshit", then it's good. >>10528040

what we're talking about here is a SMALL but vocal audience is clamoring for an MML3. i'd say the MML games, especially the first one, do have some interesting ideas, but the game goes from a zelda-ish semi-open world game to a full blown anime narrative. that might be exactly what some people want, but it isn't what everyone wants.

>> No.10528429

also, i'll make this point since there's a solid chance it'll come up:

the problem with so-called "weebs" is they're looking for aesthetics. aesthetics are the most important thing. style over substance. i get that. i remember growing up and renting whatever anime i could grab at blockbuster--why? because it looked cool. that's why. and it was cool. it was stylish.

the problem with this is there's no depth. i'm of the opinion that a good piece of media is good for all time. that's why we like retro games: there are games like super metroid, chrono trigger, final fight, sonic 3 and knuckles, street fighter alpha 3, ocarina of time, that still hold up. you may not like some of those games or feel they're overrated. that's fine. the point is those titles have substance AND aesthetics.

when something goes "full weebshit" it becomes consumerist, disposable trash, and that's exactly what many of us are trying to get away from via retro games. that's why modern gaming sucks. it's designed to get you in the door, get your money, and they don't give a fuck about anything else.

MML2 is amazing. The tank controls are the only bad part. It sucks that that is such a fundamental, constant part of the gameplay. But the setting is awesome and I absolutely love the idea of having a mobile "home base" airship that you can come back to after adventures and it has a living room with a tv and bedrooms and all this comfy shit, and the cool dropship engineering room, etc. Just kino.
Would be so stoked if they remade it with modern 2 joystick style controls, or better yet made MML3 and it turned out really good.

The anime influence didn't affect the sales of Legends, dipshit. You act like the game is all style and no substance because it has an anime-inspired art style while simultaneously listing a bunch of games that "have substance" and an anime artstyle. Street Fighter Alpha 3 has two playable Japanese school girls and was created by digitally scanning physical drawings of frames of animation and tracing over them. It's tough to get more anime than that without going full TokiMemo. Ditto with Chrono Trigger and OoT, both of which are clearly trying to emulate manga-style concept art within the technical limitations of their hardware. Legends failed for the same reason that the entire Mega Man franchise was struggling at the time; brand oversaturation and confusion. A lot of people didn't get that Classic, X, and Legends were supposed to be their own thing and a lot of people at the time (especially boomer parents) wouldn't/couldn't look this stuff up. So, a lot of people saw Legends and thought "Wait, didn't Mega Man X4 just come out? And didn't 8 come out before that? Fuck it, I'm not dropping $60 on a game in a series I'm two entries behind on".

Also,

This. I loved it on release and I replay it every few years. I finally played 2 this year after being afraid it wouldn't hold up and I loved it. To me it has style and substance in the nuance of NPCs and world building. Music is great. The controls aren't worse than MGS and are certainly better than AC1 and ACPP by a lot and those franchises stayed relevant until today. MGS was 2D originally as Metal Gear and it translated fine. If I had to take a stab as to why we really didn't get a 3 and cut out all the speculation and noise; it was too light hearted and nuanced for the time period. It feels like a game style/vibe that took off more much more recently:
>Protag archives goals through crafting, befriending NPCs, dungeon diving, fending off nemesis, and saves the day.
Seems like a classic architecture right? But it feels ahead of its time and limited by poor control choices and technology. Where as MGS structure could be the same you're acquiring items you need as "leveling up" where as MML you have to find parts, instructions, and really explore to get the shining laser. The payoff felt better but not as deep as modern games where we are spoiled in crafting.

If they did a MML3 with Chalice Dungeon done correctly COOP multiplayer you bet I would foam at the mouth for it. If I had the skills I'd do a hack of MML2 with randomized dungeons and a shitton new stuff.

Mega Man Legends existed for the same Reason Street Fighter EX existed: to capitalize on 3D without having to butcher the existing IP. You saw them do it again after Pokemon became a sensation with Mega Man Battle Network. They typically just create a new sub-series whenever they want to chase a fad. Once a game being 3D wasn't alone enough of a selling point they moved on, returning to their "real" games.

>What gives? How did a series this charming, fun and soulful manage to get such a bad rap over the years? Don't tell me its just people being filtered by the tank-y controls.
As someone who was online during the release of the Legends games, I can say without a shadow of a doubt it was a victim of it's own fandom. There was a lot of bitching and complaining on old BBSs and forums I used to frequent about how this wasn't truly Mega Man, that it was poor man's Zelda cashgrab using the Mega Man IP, a lot of whining about there not being a stage select, that you had to find parts so Roll could build the Special Weapons rather than stealing them from bosses (and in that regard, only carrying one Special Weapon at a time), no charge shot and no Fortress stages like Wily or Sigma. Even though you can argue the subcities ARE the "fortress stages" equivalents and many of the special weapons are built from scrap metal you dig from the trash after destroying Bonne mechas.

It was just miserable and if memory serves right Legends Station website was born splitting off from another Mega Man site because they couldn't fucking discuss Legends without people constantly shitting on it. BN (by the same people who made X4 and the Legends games) almost had the same but the successful cashcow it was offset detractors.

Yes. For a decade now. "Rockman ZXC" was rumored to be the name of ZX3. On December 31st 2021, Aizu was drunk/tipsy during the Inti Creates new years stream and someone asked about ZXC being real. And Aizu got loose lipped after a fan in the chat asked about ZXC saying how just how ZX is pronnounced "Zex" in Japanese "ZXC" was pronounced "Zex Cradle" and Makoto Yabe wrote the complete scenario for it. Apparently Capcom and Inti were already in talks but ZXA's sales killed that. During that babbling, Yoshihisa Tsuda (Inti's Vice President, director of Mega Man 7 and the Gunvolt mainline games) approached him to shut him up but Aizu was like "it's fine, it's fine! It's been so long, we can talk about it!"

>> No.10535860

>>10535807
They are clunky, you get used to it and if you’re like me even develop an appreciation for them.

Advice I got that convinced me to stick with it is to use how much money you collect when it scatters from an enemy as a metric of how much you’ve adapted to the game. You go from grabbing some of it, to most of it, to consistently picking up every piece once you’re actually used to the game.

It definitely takes some getting used to but the movement of the game becomes fun in a way that games with conventional controls aren’t. I played it in my midtwenties so there’s no childhood bias when I say that.

About halfway in there’s a very simple puzzle involving pressing three switches quickly to open a door. With normal controls it would be stupid easy, with MML’s it’s a decent test of execution for the halfway point in a game. It was the moment things clicked for me that the devs DID know exactly how clunky the controls were, but designed the entire game around them instead of trying to force them to work with ‘normal’ level design.

The ufo fight near the start is the most frustrating part of the game, after that I’d say it’s smooth sailing.

tl;dr embrace the weird controls they’re part of the experience

I've been putting off this series for too long so I finally pulled the trigger and started the first game. I'm still early on so these are just my initial thoughts, might change later. I don't have any love or hatred for Mega Man nor nostalgia so I'm not judging it based on some idea of what Mega Man "should be".
The controls are the worst offender so far. It's not terrible but it's like playing Doom with keyboard only. Doable but it feels more restricted than it should. I'm getting used to it but I don't think I'll suddenly enjoy it as much as learn to endure it. Should mention that I'm using the N64 version, might try the PS1 version to see if it's any better.
Special weapons can only be changed with Roll rather than on the spot. So far it hasn't caused much issue but having to preemptively know what weapon will be best suited for a mission I haven't started yet seems poorly thought out. Also annoying that instead of giving Mega Man some magnetism for pickups they went with a special weapon vacuum.
I'm not a fan of the dungeons. Mazes with a bad automap, no music, nothing to see. Battle Network also had those maze layouts for getting around, I don't know why they like this so much. Also it took me a while to realize I should investigate any texture slightly different. I just assumed the "holes" were just a different texture for variety rather than gameplay.
Speaking of music the game feels very sparse with it. Mega Man's footsteps aren't the most enjoyable sound to listen to, specially for a series with god tier music. Apple Market is pretty nice though.
Town feels a bit too empty for its size, sometimes unclear on how to progress.
Game starts off pretty slow and the attack on the city seems like a bad introduction considering how awkward that entire mission feels.
There is a lot of charm in the characters, that much is undeniable.
Hindsight is 20/20 but I'm seeing why this game has a checkered reputation and all the ways it could've been improved on.

The opening cutscene (at least in MML2) has huge foreshadowing that is, ironically, dependent on deciphering some of the hardest to understand lines that I can recall. You won't suffer missing out on anything genuinely meaningful a result of being unable to understand what they're saying 100%, but if there's anything you feel like you didn't catch, it may be worth watching a replay of it on YouTube or something, should it suit your fancy.

It controls pretty smoothly unless you're trying to turn while standing still every time or something. You can move left and right for a reason and turning while strafing can make turning even smoother. And that's something you'll want to do if you want to get good at those jet skate races.

I'm gonna be honest here: Legends 3 did -not- look fun to play. It looked tedious, stiff, and slow. The way the game conveys feedback to the player is terrible... And for a game that is so concerned about what the fans think, they don't put the best foot forward.

Because one detail I remember about the PS1 games is how they handled keeping the camera consistent. The camera was allowed to clip through walls. Yet Legends 3's camera collides with walls and refuses to move beyond them, which in certain areas causes visibility issues. Imagine navigating around the Flutter but the camera is jammed into the back of Volnutt's head half the time because the interior rooms are too small for the camera to move freely in.

Plus the fact X7's director was on it probably meant that the 3D was probably going to induce motion sickness at best and look completely awful at worst.

well, let's focus on the main point. the point is that media that endures has a balance of aesthetics and something meaningful. you're right that the MMX FPS by retro got my dick up, but that's not due to blind allegiance to any franchise or developer. it could've been great, it could've been bad. who knows.

my argument has nothing to do with specific titles or genres. so let's talk about that rather than a debate over personal preferences.

Same anon here, finished the game and went for some side quests for the sake of 100% completion.
Like I said with the controls, I got used to them enough that when I got hit I felt like it was my fault but it still wasn't a movement I was having fun with. The game feels a bit claustrophobic at times, like the inside of the Flutter just being so tiny.
Mazes still suck. Confusing, repetitive, boring to explore, bad automap that requires hugging the wall to register and doesn't show treasures/walls.
Game is way shorter than I thought. By the time I opened the Main Gate I thought it was just the middle point. I don't know about the game's development but I imagine it was rushed or heavily unfinished with how lacking in content it feels.
All in all, after reading for years about this game being a hidden gem and having a fantastic art direction or unfairly shit on, I'm not surprised the game wasn't a hit with either previous Mega Man fans or new ones. I'd be willing to ignore the controls if there weren't 50 other tiny things to bring it down.
That being said it wasn't so bad that I won't also try MML2 and Misadventures.

I wouldn't call criticizing the majority of the game's content, the dungeons, or the overall lack of content as a petty nitpick. Complaining about the bad map is a nitpick but a better map would've also minimized some back and forth through same looking hallways. I went in knowing the controls were a sticking point for a lot of people, even from this thread, but the game is designed around them so my problems with it were minimal but still worth mentioning. This thread is about why the game has a bad rap so I wanted to give an unbiased first timer opinion.
But like I said I don't think it's a bad game. If I had this game growing up I think it would've been one of those games I look back at fondly for the overall charm, humor, nice tunes and art direction.

So… I'm trying out the game after some PSfag said it was "better than Ocarina". it's ok, not bad, but why is the beginning so slow? you run slowly and there's a huge timesink in the form of a mall / city. there isn't terribly much to do, I just 2 small dungeons that were pretty basic, and that's it.
also, why does everything take a million hits to kill? I just beat the pirates attacking the city, and frankly that mission was a bit annoying. fight vs 3 tanks with these controls was just stupid, especially when one took several minutes to kill even with mines. but then you also have to destroy air carriers, but your shot range is so limited, and autoaim can barely keep up with the flying targets, so you miss half the time. I got atk +2 and long range parts to kill them, and they still took like 20 shots each.
I surely hope the game gives you more dungeons after that. if it does then good, but it's no OoT, the latter controls 10 times better than this and enemies don't take a million hits to kill.

Kokiri town is a pretty interesting "first town" that also provides decent tutorials. Deku Tree is a great intro and a full-fledged dungeon that exposes a ton of game's mechanics. all of this is like a first hour-two of the game, it's quite fast and not much empty running in there. then it gets slower and more cutscene heavy, but then again Hyrule has a ton of interesting stuff and NPCs, tons of sidequests there if you're willing to look.
in comparison, MML has no proper big dungeon yet. the 2 small ones exposed barely anything and had virtually no adventure/puzzle elements, just enemies and chests. the tutorials are text boxes that explain little—or nothing at all, I haven't yet been told wtf "energy" buster parts do. the NPCs are just bland, they don't have any side quests and aren't related to you in any way, the mall is ok but really, it doesn't give you anything either.
>Hyrule Field
if you aren't retarded, you won't spend much to any time there. OoT is about exploring towns first and foremost, and it does reward that a lot.
I went to MML's main town and I just didn't want to explore any of the houses. it's empty, it'd take me an hour to visit every door, and it's not easy to orient there anyway. since pirates were attacking and I suppose most houses were closed, I just skipped that section. no way I'm wasting an hour walking when I haven't even had a large proper dungeon yet.
>Yeah because Ocarina of i-frames has very speedy combat
now this is how I know you're just coping. most of the enemies in OoT die in 1-2 hits, not 20. the control is way less restrictive, you can and should move while Z-targeting. MML's lock on not only makes you stationary, it hardly lets you pick a target.

>but why is the beginning so slow?
As if OoT's beginning wasn't so slow? It had the kokiri village, more unskippable cutscenes, the extremely boring tree trunk dungeon whatever you call it, and even more unskippable cutscenes later on.
>there's a huge timesink in the form of a mall / city
And that's a bad thing for open world games? There were secrets to be discovered and the NPCs were fun to interact with. On the other hand, there's literally nothing to do in OoT in terms of nonlinear gameplay. Rupees are useless because there's nothing to upgrade and most of the items are merely for solving puzzles. I guess zeldafags just love linear games.
>there isn't terribly much to do, I just 2 small dungeons that were pretty basic, and that's it.
I thought the first dungeon was less boring than OoT's tree trunk. Smaller and too easy indeed, but at least it's not huge, slow and braindead easy.
>also, why does everything take a million hits to kill? I just beat the pirates etc
That's the easiest boss fight in the game. Your skill issue is showing.
>I surely hope the game gives you more dungeons after that.
There will be bigger dungeons with harder enemies.
if it does then good, but it's no OoT, the latter controls 10 times better than this and enemies don't take a million hits to kill.
OoT has decent controls but shitty combat. Enemies take 5 minutes to kill because you have to wait until their i-frames wear off. Dungeons are 90% puzzles, 8% subpar combat, and only 2% fun. The storyline is shit, the girls are retarded, and Link is literally gay. MML has enjoyable gameplay and much cuter girls. Megaman might not have a reproductive organ but he's attracted to girls. It's stupid for any Mega Man fan to pick "factions" like this and I don't see it often myself. The classic, X, Zero, and ZX games have similar enough core gameplay that I was personally not put off by playing any of them. Even if you prefer some series over others, if you try them out as a Mega Man fan you're likely going to enjoy at least a few from each series. The BN and StarForce games totally do have a different fandom altogether but at least that makes sense since they have entirely different gameplay that doesn't automatically appeal to people who enjoy the platformer entries.
Personally, the most annoying "fans" of Mega Man that I've encountered are the ones who have only played the first 3 NES titles and shit on everything that released after. I'm rarely annoyed by people online who actually play Mega Man games and enjoy them.

Not only is this a stupid thing to care about in regards to game quality, but Link is supposed to be a blank, silent character for the player to self insert as. He's also a small, mute child in OoT. The only times where there's implied romance for Link in any Zelda games is when he's with a girl. Whether it be Zelda, Marin, Midna, or some childhood friend (who is sometimes Zelda herself).

I think it's hilarious that the otherwise worthless for combat drill is the ultimate weapon against Klaymoor. I liked finally getting to meet pirates who weren't the Bonne's (I played Misadventures some years after MML2)

I wouldn't say the base is split THAT much, but the fact the Mega Man threads on /vg/ double as Inti Creates threads says enough.

>it isn't what everyone wants.
Side note to my main point, but games need to stop being for "everyone." It should be enough that there are people who want an anime adventure game with notes of Zelda's semi-free exploration, as you put it,
In fact, TONS OF PEOPLE should want that.
That is an amazing formula. It BLOWS MY MIND that there are not MORE game studios coming up alongside the 3D Zeldas (I know MML predates OoT, don't get hung up on that for this point) to do the same thing. That was such an amazingly successful formula, the game that did that with Zelda's name attached to it many people consider the greatest of all time. Of ALL TIME. WHY IN GOD'S NAME IS NO ONE CHASING AFTER THAT???

Why in God's name do I live in a timeline where nobody cares about the genre of a game as well received as OOT?

NTA, but I actually remember there being a decent amount of sidequests and side content in the first ga.e, and a cursory look at Gamefaqs shows an entire sidequests faq.

Because designing a game like that is hard as fuck and every studio that attempted it had to, without exception, massively cut down their ambitions if they seriously aimed to make something on that level. The semi-open structure is really hard to get right.

Something of the scale of the original MML wouldn't be too taxing. It's basically metroidvania style exploration with items at set points in the story that enable a bit more exploration, with some hard gating of later areas. As long as you don't set out to create a triple-A sized adventure with modern graphics, you could make-do. The kicker here is nobody expects Megaman Legends to look better than Playstation era. It's why MML3 was targeting 3DS, and not console.

literally my fav mega man game, just for the atmosphere. i'm starving for another game with a similar vibe. i have played solatorobo and tail concerto. and yeah, those kinda have the feeling of mmgl but not quite. i also played a little of that online robot game, forgot the name. and i also played evergrace and i don't know why but it also feel like a mega man legends type game, but instead of an up-beat atmosphere is sad idk why. you should try it it's a fromsoft game. happy new years.

I think part of the problem at the time was a lot of us thought it looked like a Saturday morning cartoon and we were too old for that stuff. I played it kind of grudgingly and really enjoyed it, but my initial impression was it was too childish looking. For context, this about same year stuff like FF7 came out, and we were all on a spiel about adult games with swearing and sex with Nintendo family friendly controls gone and it just didn't seem adult enough for our 15 year old brains. I am ashamed we thought that way, but such was the time period with a lot of dumb teenagers.
