Turn off VM/Edge enhancement.
If the color/brightness etc look good to you then don't do anything.
The only thing I'd recommend is turning off the red push in the service menu (AXNT/AXPL or something), but leave it on if that makes the yellows green.

Also from the picture you posted your TV seems to have a pretty bad "Wega bow." Just ignore it if you don't notice it. You have to mess with the rings to fix that.

If geometry looks good to you don't change anything either. If you do anyway, record the original values somewhere. You can't go back to stock once you change them.

Trying to make a consumer CRT look perfect is a neverending cycle of adjustments. Just forget it and enjoy your tv desu.

It would be ideal if you could bring up a test pattern with a color/brightness ramp, something like pic related (it's from the 240p test suite). Some games have similar patterns in the options menu.
Set your brightness to minimum and go up until the TV stops crushing blacks, i.e. you can differentiate visually between the lowest levels. You'll probably have to find a compromise between perfect blacks and low levels not getting crushed. Mid setting on your TV is probably too bright and makes everything washed out.
For contrast, it's also a compromise. Find a spot on the scale that makes it bright enough for your environment and doesn't blow out highlights to white.
Tint/color for composite you can adjust more or less properly using the SMPTE color bars. Color temp I'd set to the warmer setting.
Disable any edge enhancement/digital processing/whatever it's your called on your set if it has anything like that.

An excellent "Cheap TV" choice is the 14" "Disney Princess TV". There's tons of these still lurking in closets, and they get sold by dum-dum mommies looking to clean up the old toys. They are easy to mod to RGB, have stereo speakers, and though they're not the best hardware-wise, they're a simple design (curved picture tube) so they're easy to dial-in to get a nice picture.
I have one, it's good enough to read text in Amiga 640x200 mode.

So it has almost the same viewing size and the same P22 phosphors. With component input supported. I would guess the TVL rating is about the same. less load on GPU, easier to use since you're displaying a real resolution instead of some stretched mess that you'll then have to work around. Retroarch handles that, but you'll have to configure other software for it too if you want to use it on your crt
for example watching a movie, with superres you have to stretch your video horizontally by the same factor as superres
having a GPU that can output as low as 240p without superres would be preferred, no need for workarounds like that

No.
I think the image you have posted looks fine and what I would expect from such a monitor today.
Perhaps it would be best to revise your expectations from it.

Do this.
1. Turn the monitor on and let it warm up for a period of at least an hour playing some moving content.
2. Reduce the lighting in your room to a single small lamp, or view it in total darkness.
3. Allow an hour for your eyes to fully adjust to the darkness level.

Now, only at this point are you ready to judge the monitor's performance. You may find that it appears much better looking under these conditions. For a very old monitor sometimes I think they take up to 3 hours to fully warm up from a cold start.

>> No.10524331

Extra note:
Resolution affects brightness in PC monitors.
If you are running that monitor at the highest possible resolution (probably 2048x1536) move it down to 1600x1200.
This will improve the brightness.
Moving down to 1280x960 or 1024x768 will improve it further.

Refresh rate also affects brightness.
Try lowering refresh rate to improve image quality.

With a 21" CRT PC monitor on my desk. And another back-up CRT monitor sitting in the closet.
My roomates all had their own CRTs.

Not all professional monitors are equal, can't tell if that's composite or a low TTL one, using anything other than RGB with a professional monitor is a waste

offcourse, like I said, I got it for the looks only.
Sadly PVMs are overpriced to hell so getting a 20" PVM requires alot of luck or alot of money these days.
I have had the pleasure of using large scale PVMs at gaming conventions and events and I still prefer consumer TVs, PVMs are usually dimmer due to having strong antiglare and many hours on the tube and decent consumer TVs still have plenty thick scanlines.
Id say a consumer TV gives you the best experience overall, even a 20" PVM looks small next to a 32" or even bigger consumer TV.
I would say the 38" consumer trinitrons are probably the best crt for retro games, absolutely massive with thick scanlines

Absolutely. I got mine for under $100 in 2011. It's so stupid how much they're priced for these days. I got them early because I own a Neo Geo MVS and and other arcade PCB's so they were always very popular on arcade forums like neo-geo.com and mostly everyone recommended them there for years.

prices have already gone down significantly. I bought a truckload of broadcast monitors during covid lockdown. I hit up a rental house that I knew hadn't been able to work for like 6 months and asked if i could go through their shit for gear. Each 20" was $50 and I bought a couple smaller 13-15"(?). I sold a few pvm-2030 for cheap ($350 each) because I just didn't have the storage room.Sold a bvm for $2k to a silverlake hipster.
2 years later drove these things from LA to VA and completely checked out of the crt market for that whole time because I just had so many.

prices are down and stuff stays up for long periods of time, in LA and VA.

the best part about broadcast monitors is the hobbyist shit you get into while setting them up like board repairs and making cables and shit.

i ve found exactly one broadcast monitor at a flea market, i paid $5. I also found a pvm-20L2 sitting on the sidewalk in front of St Vincent De Paul. Los Angeles just had so many of them floating around that you can still probably run into them for cheap or free. The best luck I've had is that prop house I mentioned above. newsrooms and colleges might be fine but my main advice is never mention gaming or anything like that. your first contact might be with someone that can't answer you or give them away to you. So just say you're looking for some. If you say for gaming or some stupid retro shit theyll look up "retro gaming" before you ever speak to anyone else and at that point you're done. Same goes for if you are setting up a meet, don't even mention gaming. Even if they have it posted online they may have not run into "retro gaming" but if you mention it, that price will be high as hell by the time you show up.

*sign* Where do I begin? The PS2 on this picture used to be connected to my 32" widescreen TV, but there were some problems with that setup. There was no way to force the image into 4:3 mode with pillarboxing, for instance. I know that some games support 16:9, but certainly not the majority. Image quality through component also left much to be desired, there was this chromatic aberration effect that I could clearly see that drove me nuts. So I wanted to get a CRT TV to use instead. The problem is... that I don't really have space for a CRT TV inside my flat. I was DESPERATELY looking online for one that would fit inside this cupboard (in a way that still makes it possible to completely close it) and I found nothing. The smallest I found was 14", I asked the seller for dimensions and it didn't fit, it was too deep. I eventually realized that no such CRT exists because of inherent limitations of CRT technology. So I had to get an LCD display because they are much flatter. However... no one ever really manufactured 4:3 LCD TVs. So that left me with just one option... a 4:3 (or close to it) LCD PC monitor. How did I connect a PS2 to a PC monitor, you ask? Well, that monitor has DVI-D input and I used a cheap chink PS2 HDMI adapter that takes the native component signal from PS2 and turns it into HDMI. But that adapter doesn't upscale, so 480i stays 480i, 576i stays 576i and 480p stays 480p, they're just digital signal now. And (as far as I I know) DVI-D, HDMI and DisplayPort all use the exact same digital signal transmission standard under the hood (at least for lower resolutions). So I also have a passive (I think) HDMI to DVI-D cable running from that adapter to the monitor. And it works! Sort of... I got this PC monitor locally for 4 EUR and it's actually quite good. It can display 576i, 480i, 480p through its DVI-D port no problem. The problem is that using the first two gets me this annoying floating error message about signal being out of range.

I tried everything I could and there's just no way to get rid of this. I actually saw that error message back when I was testing with my PS2 connected at the office of the guy I got this monitor from, so I knew it was there. I just thought that I can find a way to get rid of it for sure. But it's not as simple as I thought. I tried turning every OSD setting on and off. Nothing worked. I tried locking OSD settings. Didn't work. I tried locking the power button. Didn't work. I tried holding random combinations of buttons in hopes that I'd trigger something and nothing worked. Another unfortunate thing is that when this error message is displayed I cannot enter the OSD settings to change brightness for instance. I thought that there must be some button combination that would allow me to unlock hidden OSD settings or service menu that would finally allow me to turn this off. After googling aggressively, I found nothing. I know that this isn't a CRT, but if no one knows here then certainly no one on this website knows. /g/ was useless as usual. Please help, I really want to get this to work. I can play games that support 480p through component just fine because that resolution is above 31kHz and so the monitor doesn't display this stupid warning. But not every game has a deinterlacing patch or can be successfully forced to use 480p through GSM.

Yeah, I know all about DD and DTS. DTS was always much better because of the higher bitrate, shame many movies only had Dolby. I don't even have a home theater setup right now, only stereo, but I want to build a dedicated second system for it in the future, with Atmos and all that jazz.
One thing with Akira is that there's A LOT of different audio tracks, seems like they messed with it for every subsequent release. The 4K Blu-ray that's available in the west doesn't have the original 2.0 track, you can only get it on the Japanese 4K, even though old western BDs had it. Good that there's no region locking this time, at least. The latest 5.1 track sounded amazing at the cinema by the way, other than some dialogue being a bit too quiet.

Very easy solution to your problem. Go out and get a 34" widescreen crt that weighs 200 pounds and replace your 32" widescreen LCD with it. They can do 480p (deinterlace from 480i as well) and 720p and 1080i.

HAHAHAHAHAHA, I DID IT, I FINALLY DID IT!
I searched some more and found a forum post with some guy complaining that his monitor displays some weird message saying "Stop! If you continue you will void your warranty!" all on its own. Another guy suggested that it was likely because the buttons on his monitor were broken and behaved as if pressed on their own. He also said that the message was probably about entering the service menu, but that he didn't remember the exact button combination to do it. But then I thought: if broken buttons can trigger it on its own, then it can't be too complicated... I tried holding random button combinations some more, and the result is this. AFAIK no new options get unlocked in OSD settings, but it gets rid of the floating error message each time it's applied, which is enough for me.

I'm gonna have to look into some of these Akira blue ray disks. I'm interested in trying the 2.0 track. I don't have any newfangled stereo equipment to try some with atmos sound though. I was cleaning my parents house and just recently found my old pioneer 5.1 AV receiver that I bought as a teenager. It still works perfectly fine. I can attest that the DTS dvd sounds really good. I don't care so much how the diologue sounds as I don't understand Japanese but the sound effects are spectacular.

there was noticeable change even in /crt/ in the last few years. in 2020/2021 this thread still had a bunch of people posting cheap monitors they got or consumer sets theyd modded themselves. when i checked back in for the first time like last year it had completely shifted to mostly consumer sets and pretty shit OC pictures. The consumer sets are fine and all but there was also way more anti professional monitor attitude and a sense that consumer sets were just as good as professional monitors, which is legit just a cope. professional monitors may be overkill and obviously way overpriced for the application but they're not even close in build quality, serviceability, or picture quality. Sure, plenty of consoles only need 240p, but lots of later consoles had higher output settings that most consumer sets wouldnt be able to take advantage of.
i got all my professional monitors for cheap or free, but given the choice it isn't even close. There is no reason to overpay for a monitor, but even paying like $50 for a consumer set is overpaying.

That one hurt when i got into the hobby a few years later until i realized there were shit tons to be had for dumb cheap. they simply arent better.
Any half decent consumer TV can display 240p perfectly fine.
You really only need around 400 TVLs for that since its you know...
320x240 resolution.
PVMs are cool and neat but not special really.
You are not making use of any of the advanced broadcasting features when playing videogames on them, they were made to deliver the best 480i experience with tons of options for color input, linking, remote control etc depending on the model.
Are PVMs better as broadcast monitors then TVs?
yes
Are PVMs better for old video game systems?
nope.
Decent size TV set with RGB input is just as good for that.
>>10530654

Not really, it's not much different from the analog version from the old days where they were trying to figure out color TV.
It literally had a spinning wheel with 3 or 4 colors in front of it that was in sync with the framerate, giving the illusion of color. This is basically the digital version of that.

Cheap projectors also use that principle, they literally spin a wheel in front of a black and white projected image before it leaves the projector to change color of each frame it displays.

Hey, anon.

That Trinitron on the second picture was probably the best since it has component and maybe Svideo depending on the model. Of course, that depends also on which consoles you plan to play on it.
I wouldn't get the Magnavox since it looks pretty worn-out, it's missing some of the front buttons.
I love the look of that black Sony and probably would get it if it was me. But it's probably composite only.

Either way, everything depends on the condition of each TV. I suggest asking the seller for a picture or video of the TV working. If the image looks clear, bright, and with no visible distortions, it should be good.

Monochrome tube, no mask/grille. Same reason there's very sharp sub-1inch camcorder viewfinder CRTs. The limitation to resolution is how fast you can drive the beam.

Sure at some point the beam and the phosphor itself would become the limit, but at 20 inches it would be far away, even at 8k.

>> No.10535069

Spot size is the determining factor of what a monochrome tube can resolve.
So you either need sharper focus or a bigger tube

How is this any different than what I just posted?
The spot size isn't even really determinated by the tube, but how you drive it. At least not at the resolutions we talk about, it's not a tube limitation, especially at 20 inches.

>> No.10535102

>>10535086
It is very different.
And a 9" tube running 2500x2500 is indeed limited by its spot size more then likely.
And it is a matter of the tube, not just how you drive it.
Yes the harder you drive a tube the bigger the spot, however some tubes are simply sharper then others.
One of the main aspects of improving crts is improving focus aka spot size which is why high resolution tubes have atleast 2 pots for focus.

You said 20 inch. But if 9 inch is more than likely, then I doubt 20 inch would be a problem.

Yes and even older monochrome tubes can be very sharp, as proof of concept.

you know how changing the brightness affects the tube despite you not turning anything directly on the tube?

The largest CRT projector tubes ever made were 12 inch tubes in the BarcoReality 912, which I believe cost over $100k. The limitation in going larger is probably making lenses that size - pictured is the 12 inch lens next to like a 9 inch...it's like the size of an air cleaner on a semi truck. I'm not sure they could even make a 20 inch set, at least for a realistic price - for comparison, a 20 inch lens is half the size of those in the gigantic Yerkes telescope, the largest refracting telescope ever made.

But that said, I definitely think waiting too long to find the perfect set at a bargain price isn't the best idea, even if you wind up paying a little bit more than you think is ideal. As somebody who has been in "the game" of retro games and retro game adjacent shit for quite some time, it's comically sad just how many things I see which are cited as being "good deals," but would've been "you're a fucking delusional retard to ask/pay that much" prices not even a decade ago. Arcade candy cabs were plentiful, like if you wanted an Astro City, you could hop on ebay and buy an Astro for a few hundred, no waiting or fighting or searching, even in the early 2010s, then one day they got markedly harder to obtain outside of Japan and suddenly people became rabid to buy them for over a grand.
Will all old CRTs suffer the same fate? Nah, but I do think decent consumer sets will eventually creep in price to match today's low end pro monitor prices.

I got one of these: ebay.com/itm/174166352619 a few years ago and it works fine for me. It handles RGBHV and RGBS so you can use it with a SCART output as well with a simple adapter.

Look up CRT_emudriver 2.0 and there will be a huge list of AMD compatible GPUs (geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=1009#p1009). Just find whatever is compatible with your current hardware and cheap if all you want to do is output video.
