It's easier to single out the Bad ones: haunted castle, all the western-developed ports for microcomputers...
The console Castlevanias are all pretty good and there's no way to "objectively" select a Best one, it's subjective.
My favorites are still the Simon games: CV1, IV and X68k

>> No.10517716

>>10517597
X68k is excellent, Cv1 is good and SCIV is just okay
Personally I have a soft spot for Christopher's games: Belmont's Revenge is extremely creative and takes a lot of cues from Mega Man, while ReBirth is full of superb, intricately packed room layouts (but yeah, anyway it's not retro)
Unfortunately The Adventure being unfun kusoge means that secondaries often dismiss the other two games, even though they're vastly superior

Bloodlines. in five years Castlevania The Adventure ReBirth will take its rightful crown.

Super. Great level variety and got rid of the faggy sub weapon importance. With Bloodllines you have to play at the highest difficulty to get the most out of it.

CV1 is the purest and least flawed.
CV3 is the most ambitious and impressive.
CV4 has the strongest audio/visual presentation.
Rondo is the best balanced, with regards to its controls and difficulty.
Bloodlines has the best music.
Dracula X is the one I pick up and replay the most.

>cv1
a true classic but obviously somewhat primitive as a 1986 first attempt
>cv3
cv1 taken to its full potential but undermined by difficulty issues(famicom too easy, american haphazard difficulty spikes)
>IV
snes showcase with a really cool whipping system. too easy, too few enemies that don't get negated by OP whip spam
>bloodlines
arcade take on the castlevania formula with a good balance of tension and not being unreasonably difficult to make it to the credits. undermined by samey location and enemy design. upside down reverse section in last level is horseshit.
>rondo
classicvania at its apex. incredible production value. undermined by limp level design, overpowered item crushes, and a halfbaked multipath progression system. overly floaty jump sacrifices snappy rhythm of the series for more platforming potential.
>dracula x
janky rondo knockoff with ill suited washed out background art but manages to be pretty good in spite of it

It's hard to pick out one, they're all great but each has an achilles heel. I suppose 1 is probably the most well rounded.

Genuine question, are you saying Castlevania wasn't supposed to appeal to gays, or just that your personal preference weren't for these types of games due to being gay? Or are you just using the term humorously? I wouldn't think twice about this type of post ordinarily, but your wording seemed oddly specific, so it made me curious.

Really showing your zoomer here. Japanese media in these days was renowned for gore. If you don't know, don't speak. Also, fag for not liking gore.
>>unfitting settings like Greek mythology
Never understood this complaint and it always seemed like cope. Castlevania has never, ever been a true horror game. It has always been a mixture of horror tropes and dark fantasy adventure, with a distinctly European gothic flare. You're complaining about Greek settings in a series that has Medusa as a common enemy, think about that.

That's on purpose dumbass. 4 trivializes weapon selection because the whip is easy mode, Bloodlines goes back to a more classic style so that weapons have purpose again, while still giving the whip a little more utility.

That makes a lot of sense, I had the feeling that Bloodlines might've used IV as a foundation. Bloodlines feels like such a direct improvement over IV, you can tell exactly what the Bloodlines team liked about it and what needed to be fixed.
Bloodlines' control schemes for John and Eric are such an obvious example of taking IV's ideas and refining them.

I honestly like both. The whip feels better in IV but the whip also becomes pretty much your most valuable asset. Whip is less powerful in Bloodlines, but it gives other weapons more utility.
