90's Capcom is the most absolute soulful period of art in gaming. how did they do it? what did they have in the water? current Capcom has some cool artists too (i think nearly all of the above still work there in some capacity?) like Chisato Mita, but at that period of time, all in that one company, it was something else. i have a good amount of videogame/retro/anime artbooks, but pic related is probably my favorite one of all, just pure peak Capcom

I don't think any other company had an internal art department on the level of Capcom's until the mid to late 90s; if you saw a really cool illustration anywhere else it was almost always some external commission.

KN was always my favorite, though Bengus has apparently a huge fan following.

- Doom 1 (Don Ivan Punchatz).
- Alien vs Predator (Bengus).
- AOF2 (Shinkiro).
- Chrono Trigger (Toriyama).
- Golden Axe 2 (Boris Vallejo).
- Another World (Éric Chahi).

i at least gave him the benefit of the doubt that he had to rush out literally hundreds of these illustrations for all the SFV character story modes, as this was my first time seeing modern Bengus art. however seeing his proper polished art now, it's really not all that different... i think its mostly how he just draws girls now that disappoints me. the way he draws dudes is still largely the same, his girls used to be a bit chunkier in ways that looked more like girls in fighting games probably should, but now he draws them all borderline generic anime moe.
also not a fan of his coloring now, it looks like hes using shit ton of blending effects (multiply, add, screen, etc) to color instead of just manually picking good colors

I mean, there's nothing there (or missing) that he didn't intended imo. It's just a more simple and exaggerated style than his 90s stuff.

Though I haven't played the newer games so I'm judging by this mostly; any other example you'd call "worse"?

Bengus' work during the Street Fighter Alpha/Darkstalkers/early X-men/Marvel crossover games era to me was legendary, just "the" look that these games had. i feel like the in-game sprites that all those games had were modelled closely after Bengus' style/proportions more so than anyone elses style, so i almost thought of his art as being the true, representative look for those games.
Nishimura is still so great though, unlike Bengus' decline. her new stuff is still so appealing to me as her old stuff was. she's probably fared the best of any of the old school Capcom artists.
Shinkiro still does what he does best, but he's went through certain periods where he tried out other things with his art in the past that i liked better. i really like his KOF 99/2000 stuff where the creases on all the clothes for the characters he drew had this distinct cool look to them, and his art for Capcom Fighting Evolution might be one of the only redeeming things about that game, this limited cel-shaded look was really cool

i think on a most basic level, everyone can understand the way his style has changed is to be a more economic, looser approach to what he was doing before. some people might just view that as "because he wanted to pivot his art in that direction if he thinks it looks more stylish", and some will view it as "he got lazier/shittier"

>>10487137
i agree with you in that its a pet peeve of mine when niggers say "this is shit" as if its fact, instead of just their opinion. it bothers me less so on this site because i come to expect it. but in that anons defense, while it's obviously not an empirical universal fact, in most conversations i've seen here or other websites, when the topic of Bengus' art comes up, i've seen the sentiment that his old art is simply better quite a lot. the idea that he got "worse" or "regressed" isn't an entirely uncommon one. i for one don't think his current art is "bad", but i definitely still prefer his old stuff. this was me >>10487054
when i saw his art in the SFV stories, i thought they looked the way they did because he was rushed to make hundreds of them in a relatively short period of time, but i then learned that was kind of just a, still rushed, version of what his style had changed into, and it wasn't as appealing to me anymore

Well put. That image represents exactly what I mean with "entitlement" though. Whatever these artists are doing, they're doing it because they want to, and it's simply obtuse to believe they're in possession of less insight on what motivates the shift and of their craft in general than the average fuckhead criticizing them. That said, there IS a difference between diagnosing a random young artist like that with "regression" from an entirely individual consumer perspective, and doing the same with motherfucking Bengus.

This is unfair too, MK's proportions are all similar because.....they were real people, everyone has a similar athletic build because they were real martial artists digitized, not exaggerated cartoon drawings. As for their costumes I don't think they are all that generic, it's very inspired by Hong Kong cinema so in a way it is but they still have a bit of flair, and if we're talking "generic" SF has plenty of generic designs too like "karate guy" "sumo" "army man"etc, I don't see how MK is more generic

Idk which series you're talking about, but I agree with either.

Street Fighter design got horrible by III, with only Juri being really good to this day and C. Viper being ok, and both of them do really kind of smell like "we want to make SNK girls too" and don't fit in with SF but it's fine by me, cause hot.

MK's later characters rarely ever would have the same appeal as the old ones mainly because they are mostly lamer replacements of the older ones. Occasionally something cool like Nitara is there, but mostly lame.

It works with anime inspired things like Darkstalkers and Street Fighter (the best they ever looked by far), but it has this sort of soft and pretty quality to it that just never meshed well with me for Marvel, there is something decidedly Japanese about it that doesn't do justice to the comics I was reading

Glad somebody else agrees. MvC2 is a great game and some of the new character sprites are great but the game is exceedingly rushed and you can really feel it in the presentation. It barely feels like a celebration of Marvel & Capcom when MvC1 was bursting with love for both companies. The Bengus art is the only soulful thing about it.

Did literally anybody like the backgrounds, muzak and general "story" of mvsc2, even then? Even the new "original" characters, as cool as the designs were, were kinda pointless since the appeal of the games was in the crossover factor with known faces. The staff and resources required to create 3 original characters and an original boss could have been invested in more playable marvel/capcom characters (say keep SonSon but make him THE SonSon, and add maybe a fully playable Sir Arthur or something, plus some other marvel rando and another Marvel-themed boss like Galactus or somebody to keep the pattern going).

Also, controversial take: the Akihiko Yoshida-esque sketchy/hatchy style was b-tier Bengus at best, specially the color.

People to this day talk about how iconic and GOAT MvC2's music is an by extension the stages they play on. The tiny loop for the stage select is one of the entire genre's most memorable compositions. I agree that it's pretty overhyped despite liking the OST a lot, I think they only did it because character themes would've been too much time/work. The "story" is literally just that the entire cast showed up on Ruby's boat and she's after Abyss IIRC; I do wish Ruby Heart became the mascot of Vs Capcom and showed up in TvC/Marvel 3/etc.
