I wouldn't go that far, the competition is just too tough and I don't know if Sonic 3 & Knuckles holds up against other titles that just have more going on, but it's definitely up there and a discussion about the greatest video games of all time, or at least the greatest platformers, should definitely include it as one of it's contenders.

Oh, look, it's the "Sonic was never good" spammers again. If Sonic was just about holding right and winning you'd complain, a lot of you do actually, while others complain that you get hit by things and it doesn't flow incredibly when you play it for the 1st time, pick a narrative and stick to it. Sonic's a SEGA IP, famous for it's arcade direction, you have to grind and work for it.

We're not all the same person, anon. Also, just because there are some "cocky" OPs from time to time that still doesn't justify the hate Sonic gets compared to other classic franchises, we never see a "Mario was never good" or "Zelda was never good" thread, for example, and on those few times it happens, it's never taken seriously, while it is with Sonic, which is stupid.

I recall when even the Adventure titles, while it was still mixed, were better received than now, and the general opinion was that, while Sonic didn't transition all that well into 3D, the 2D ones were still classics... but then the Adventure stuff started getting panned and now the classics too, I've never seen this happen to any other series the way its happened to Sonic, not even close.

If you watch a blind playthrough of any arcade title, or arcade port, from the 80's and 90's, the chances are that whoever's playing willl lose all of their lives, and be forced to restart, very fast, and this will happen over and over for quite some time, now tell me... is that fun? Well, it isn't if you only like winning, which seems to be the case with a lot of you people, but it's not about that.

All video games, good ones at least, make the player struggle and learn over time to get better and better at it, so that our wins can actually be rewarding, that's what arcades were all about.

If you think running into enemies and getting hit sometimes, you know... failing and losing, isn't a crucial part of any video game, then I don't know what to say, you're not arguing in good faith.

It's funny, if Sonic was just a matter of holding right, and there are times it is more like that, it's panned for playing itself, but it's also panned for asking the player to improve and learn aswell. If you don't like Sonic and/or arcade styled video games in general, just say so, no need to sound all "intelectual" and argue about how it's flawed because you suck at it and don't want to learn.

1. These games being "not very good" isn't a fact, it's your opinion, that most people don't share. If you ask most casual video game fans from today, or more dedicated video game fans from the 90's about Sonic, they'll likely tell you that Sonic was great and they love him, most people at least.

2. This idea that Sonic only got high scores due to SEGA influence has no backing, it's common to hear stories from 90's kids about wanting to own a Genesis just for sonic despite being Nintendo kids, just because they played at a friend's place, most people liked playing Sonic and you know it.

3. Rvery fanbase has cocky people that are quite insufferable, a lot of people on /vr/ hate tendies and snoys, why? Because they are also a pain, all big fanbases are bound to have annoying people because if the fanbase is big, even if just 1% of people suck, it's still going to be a lot of people.

4. Yes, a lot of Sonic fans are autistic, it's quite odd that there's such a correlation, but there clearly is, but they can't help if they're autistic and genuinely hating them for it is just mean. Also, a lot of said autism can be funny at times, so why not take it well instead of getting upset?

Carnival Night Zone and that stupid barrel really ruins Sonic 3 to me, it's just so stupid. It's no wonder Nintendo ended up beating them after all these years, and I've started to understand just why Sonic was never popular in his home country. It's like they're made to maximize frustration. Other platformers of the time had already moved on from limited continues. The main reason this series did so well in the US is because the US developers managed to be even worse, so SEGA didn't have much competition.

I feel bad for sonic fags, I really do. They lost the console war, the mascot war, and the gameplay war. They wander like lost souls who can't find solace after death. They get hate and scorn by virtually everyone. Once they were considered supremacists against any other videogame, but nowadays they can only provoke laugh. I'm being told that, when nobody is watching, they wear their sonic shirts and pretend it's the 90s again. But after the fantasy is over, they resume their sad lives.

I'm sad things turned out to be this way. But it is what it is. Be patient towards them, they deserve our pity.

Indeed, it's another reason I still play standalone Sonic 3 from time to time, it's just a nice way to end a playing session on, feels cozy and overall it fits Sonic quite perfectly to me, a true classic.

>>10509460
I know this is bait, but on the chance that it isn't, or that it is bait/shitposting, but motivated by at least a few of this anon's real feeling on things... no one really cares that much about 90's console wars anymore, at least not here since most of us are adults now, it doesn't matter what company sold the most units of their product, nor does it matter which franchise gets better reviews, sold more, etc... we're no longer in the 90's where we have to pretend to have the competing console, despite playing it at our friend's place every time we go there and loving it, just because we can't afford both at the same time. If people here are still playing Sonic, it's not because the character won or lost the console/mascot/gameplay war or whatever, it's because it's still fun to play to us.

Well, that's all.
Anyways... cheers, consolewarbait-anon, I hope you have a good day, God bless you.

Other, challenging games did not "move on" from limited continues. Sonic is actually very easy for his time to beat, compared to even some of Nintendo's offerings (Donkey Kong Country 2 and 3's harder levels), but to get better at it, one has to do better: that is what makes Sonic interesting and why they haven't "moved on" from limited continues, because that is what encourages improvement.

Eh, it's just not fun. Having a whole lot of progress invalidated, so you have to give up and leave the game very frustrated. I haven't gotten to the DKC games, but if the game allows you to save, that's already much easier than Sonic. Limited continues make a big difference, the whole game is one big level in this scenario, and will probably take you longer to beat.

NTA but while I get that this is a reason why you might dislike Sonic with this system, which is fair, I don't see it as something that's objectively bad, as it's just a different direction, for people like me that love an arcade style/philosophy of having that grind that brings rewarding feelings from getting further each time and learning until you finally conquer it, Sonic being this was is a huge plus. Sonic 2 is legitimately cruel with its enemy placement. Sonic 3's alright about it, you can flow through it blind as long as you pick up on its level design patterns. You'll start to notice trends where enemies and traps will be spaced a similar amount of distance ahead of a given running or platforming segment. There's some bad placements here and there for each zone, but they're far enough apart that it's not all that bothersome. Just take the hit and you can build some nice speed for a while until you get the hang of things. You'll hardly ever game over.

It's just a personal thing, but it's not a matter of being entitled or wanting to speedrun it, I'm also a fan or arcade styled stuff, it's why I like SEGA so much really, I enjoy the grind and taking my time.

However, just because I enjoy being punched for a bit before finally conquering what I'm playing by learning it, it doesn't mean that I want to play the same thing for long, I love the feeling of the progress when going from one level to another, with a different OST, setting and aesthetic, and new things to learn... again, it's just a preference, I love video games, just in a different way, anon.

Just play up to your fucking time limit you set and fuck off, no one should be "tired" of a level they haven't fucking played the first time, so if this is a post time event, then why are you forcing yourself to play a stage to completion again when you can just stay in the first 2 zones that are one minute max on average? Why are you asking for zone 12 to last 2 fucking minutes?
Again, I already said if you shitheads think like this, then 24 zones should be the default where the first 6 is like 2 mins for you faggots, 3-4 for the mid half, then 4-5 for the end half so the actual build up to a final battle isn't compromised. The bosses in Sonic are already piss easy, last thing I fucking want is """2 min stages" but the bosses are 9+ minutes like in fucking Superstars. Never fucking again should classic Sonic be about bosses until the last level, where it should be a juggernaut of skillful hits like in Sonic 2 and S3K

NTA, but it would be more fun to have a full game of well-paced levels rather than measuring it purely by how much time it takes away from you. A good game can be just 15 minutes for all I care (which is how some arcade games are), as long as every single minute of that is well made. Stages in 3 being around 4-5 minutes long is often wasted because this usually means chunks being recycled and there being a lot of filler in-between actually interesting areas. S3's final boss is also piss easy, and it having a boss every stage despite none of those bosses being interesting is also odd.

Then you never liked arcade gaming and you're clearly a fucking zoomer that needs to leave /vr/
Literally zero games play like this except Nintendie ones.

Well, if I'm playing a level, obviously my goal is to get to the end and to the next level, to advance the adventure, which is why I prefer levels to be around 3 to 5 minutes long, I'm fine with some levels taking around 6 to 7 minutes, but when all levels end up taking me that, and every time it feels like it'll end it just keeps going, to me it's a lot worse, than more condensed level design.

I agree with you on your suggested structure, I mentioned that already and I don't get why you have to be so upset at me about this, I haven't disrespected you once in our discussion, anon.

Anyways, I don't want 2 minute levels either, it's too short, I feel that levels can be both too short or too long, there is a sweet spot in the middle and to me Sonic 2 hits it better than Sonic 3 does, but that's just me, and if you prefer Sonic 3 I get it, I get the appeal, it's just not my preference. I don't think the 2D levels in Forces, or Superstars, handled this well either, they dropped the ball.

We're not zoomers that don't like or get what makes arcades and their style special, it's why I've always loved SEGA so much, but to me what that other anon said makes sense, the reason I'm so into arcade styled titles it's because they have no bloat, no padding, it's a purely condensed experience you can finish in 15 minutes if you're good at it, but you'll likely lose at first, it's fun,

There's tons of wonderful games fitting that anon's description. Please do not be a silly little bait worm.
