Welcome to the Retro Game Gauntlet, gentlemen.

Old Thread
>>1028667

1336433524841 The screen dreaded by most gauntleteers
Start at NES, and work through in the following order:

NES
SNES
GB/GBC OR Sega Game Gear
Megadrive/Genesis
Turbografx16
DOS
NeoGeo
GBA OR Sega Master System
Commodore 64 OR Commodore Amiga
Playstation 1 OR Nintendo 64
You have three days to complete the game without assistance (each game gets three days, though RPGs are allowed a week due to length). Select your system here:

http://s3kr.it/gauntlet.html

You can also do it manually if you don't trust the random number generator:

Rules:

1) Savestates are allowed ONLY for the purpose of taking screenshots and ONLY if your emulator/game in question does not have a pause function.

2) Rerolls are allowed under the following conditions:

The game you get requires some sort of hardware functionality that cannot be accurately emulated to complete (eg, Boktai)
The game would otherwise require cheats, hacks, or alteration of the software to complete due to a bug (eg, Cheetahmen II)
3) Playstation 1 games can be given up to 2 weeks to complete if the game is more than 2 discs.

4) If you lose / give up to a game you have to go back one square instead (ie if you gave up a Genesis game, you go back to GB/GBA and continue frome there)

5) For Rule 4, if the game you fail is on the same path as another console, you have the choice to roll for that console instead of dropping down a level.

For games that have a high score or no end, the rule is:

If no high score has been established, set a goal and beat it
if you're playing something another anon already has a high score on, beat their high score
If you are playing extended rpgs/pokemon/whatever you get a week [Depending on the game needs to be asked in thread]

Jesus fuck dat TECHNOLOGY.
This may not be the best game out there, but damn, it's juicy.

A couple observations from playing the first few levels...

The game is a beat em up with a simple leveling system and pretty tight controls. The AI is sometimes unfair as fuck and the fact that you can't block like they do (despite having a shield) adds insult to injury, but it's bearable overall.

You get five credits, and no extends. Death also takes you back to the beginning of the stage. This forces you to play the game through mostly without dying, however you get to keep your experience even after being booted to the title screen.

As I said, the visuals are juicy as fuck. They somehow managed to render the background in layers (yes I said layers, not just scanline scrolling), and there's no sprite flicker present anywhere. Many sound effects are PCMs. Yet, the game's cartridge is only 256k. I don't know which mapper is it running on but it's used well. It's literally one of those "looking better than the hardware allows" games you hear of in creepy stories.

I hope this isn't considered cheating, but I found a map for this game and have been using it it solely to figure out where to go and where to go first. Navigating the over world is quite unwieldly without a map and the only hint you are given is "Solve the three cyphers", yup, this is like zelda

>> No.1049780

>>1049778

Just checked and it does just fine. You hold up to block overhead swings and projectiles being rained down on you, such as the wizard's angled fireballs or the ogre's overhead swing.

Ducking blocks standard swings and fireballs. Try it out on the first skeleton in the game.

The hardest part of this g ame is learning to read the enemy tells really, really quickly.

>map debate

Well this thread got hostile.

Alright, this is what I've always heard and what I've always believed for the Gauntlet.

Guides and fan-made maps are NOT allowed. Any game manual or official map that came with the game IS allowed, as well as it being allowed to make your own map. I once had an RPG with no map and I just made one myself in MS Paint and shared it in the Gauntlet thread whenever I had fully mapped out an area. I'd post it here, but it was on my old computer and I wouldn't want to raise the image count anyway.

So, the one >>1049830 posted would not be allowed, but the resources >>1049864 posted would be allowed.

I will admit there are one or two times in which finding a manual online was impossible for me and I needed a vital gameplay thing so I went to a FAQ to look at controls. I believe we all cheat a little at the Gauntlet like that and never tell anyone. But, there's a line in which something that's arguably cheating becomes absolute cheating, and using an exact fanmade map qualifies as exact cheating.

>> No.1050268

Right, I just read up on the game (it's been a while...) and I now remember there was some inventory fuckery going on at the point in the game you're at. Once you get past the point where you need wood, you'll be a lot better off with inventory space.

Also, I'd give it seven days on principle, but yeah, it's not all THAT long, but it can fuck with you in certain spots that might cause you to take a lot longer than you expected. Also, the game is definitely fun all the way through.

Pretty good progress so far. I just entered stage 6 out of 7, and I'm pretty sure that I can breeze through the game until this point on one life.

Some recap:

Stage 3 was piss easy once I realized that crouching near Death is a safe zone, since it blocks low hits and lets high hits go over.
Stage 4 had some bullshit platforming but it's possible to despawn the eyes. The gargoyle was easy as fuck. The bomb spell he drops insta-kills him in the next stage.
Stage 5 is laughably easy. Got through it on the first try. Just like stage 3, it's a boss rush - death, gargoyle and some guy with a mace. The boss was a dragon, but it was easier than the enemies in the stage itself.

The mage staff was useless at first but it's overpowered now.
I still can't reliably double jump for shit. The timing is bullshit, it's literally one frame.

Fuck level 5. For some reason on your quest to destroy all insects you take a helicopter and start chucking bombs at them.

Never mind the idea that insects touching you damages the helicopter, the irony is that the most dangerous enemy is the swarms that fire flies at you. The swarms move faster than your helicopter (and the projectile flies are even faster than that), and somehow, a tiny ass fly is able to take out an entire heart while the much larger hornets(?) do nowhere near as much damage

I accidentally started over from the beginning, so I might as well mention this too...

The AI of these ants are fairly simple, they chase you if you turn away from them and run away if you face them, this however changes when you hit them. After you hit them, they manage to run outside the borders of the screen if you chase them, and if you run away from them they will chase you to halfway across the room and spazz right the fuck out right then and there, (too quickly for this GIF) making it basically impossible to hit them.

Which means I have to keep running in and out of the room over and over again until I manage to land some 2 hit combo while they ricochet across the screen.

Luckily this phenomenon only seems to happen in this one room, so far while I've played it.

It begins.
Controls set up, manual downloaded. I hope that my dpad/numpad scheme will work better than having to use trigger buttons. Wish I had a sega controller.

The bad news is, I suck at fighting games and I don't like them for that very reason. The only fighting game I ever was remotely good at was DOA2 and that's only because of its low skill ceiling.

So, what are my conditions for winning? Which speed and difficulty do I need to clear?

Is zoomed out more than the arcade version but has no way to turn the turret, much easier to control but there are far less directions to move in. Enemies seem cool, turrets that spin and only fire if you go in front of the barrel, pop up turrets that you have to wait for them to be vulnerable, and stupid tanks you can lure into mines.

Looks like I got lucky, going to enjoy this game I think.

Oh hey. Cool game designers, it makes a lot of sense to teleport me from the bedroom to an area telling me I need a gold key and then put the gold key all the way back in the bedroom you just teleported me out of.

Also what's with this area and repeated rooms? The room with the slippery ice is repeated, the underground hallway areas, the hallway and bedroom...

o... okay. Tool and diary I can do. Don't remember a photo though, and coffin? We ran into those a while back (to get the diary key I think? past the incinerator?) but I don't know if we can pick them up...

>> No.1054984

>>1054981

You can definitely pick them up if they're the right items, because yeah, you'll need the items for the final battle (not exactly spoiling anything here, since the game kind of spells it out apart from what exactly you need it for).

Not really THAT close, although you're getting there. There's still a few things the game will throw at you, but Yamamura getting skeletized is the kick-off for the "shit's getting real" part. I think you're still missing the part with the projector and then the caves, though.
