What's the best Pokémon game outside of the handheld RPGs? Anything that gives off the same vibes as the anime? Anything that's legit good?

It's not fair.
Colosseum and its sequel are marred only by a lack of a way to disable battle animations, but emulator speedup saves the day there.

Colosseum, then XD, which is its sequel. I'm assuming you want pure pokemon battles and the other two games i mentioned (Mystery Dungeon, Conquest) play vastly differently.

I don't know much about the Stadium games, but check em out if you're interested. The graphics are pretty charming.

It doesn't get more anime than...this obscure SNES hack.
You may be asking "wait what" or "the heck?" but it's true. No game captures the season 1 vibe also found in early manga that Pokemon are lore. For example, let's consider the move Fly. What happens in the game is you deal damage but no one considers that an enemy Pidgey would be flying for real...except THIS game. You play the anime.

It's literally just Tetris Attack/Panel de Pon but with characters and songs from the anime. There's also some obscure and probably untranslated SEGA Pico game. Otherwise, Colosseum and XD are good, you might also like Stadium and Snap. As it pertains to /vr/ I would say maybe Snap is the closest to the anime since you get to see more of the actual world, even though it's still on rails. Otherwise you're probably better off with something like Arceus which imo is what Pokemon should've been in the first place

Well you can play them, but completing round 2 in Pokémon stadium 1 & 2 is next to impossible with only rental mon’s, because their stats and move sets are very lack luster, not to mention the AI’s teams are have perfect stats and great move sets, it’s an uphill battle.

You can play them but good luck actually completing them with rentals. Take a look at this team and think about how you can beat it with L15 rentals that are also NFE because the final evos you have access to have garbage movesets.
In fact, every rental guide out there tells you that the right play if this guy picks Alakazam (because he can only choose one L20) is to forfeit the match

>> No.10491927

>>10491140
And you can't level up the rentals?

Is it possible to beat the game standalone?

>> No.10491948

>>10491927
It is possible, people have done it, but the fact of the matter is all rentals are a set level. So for example, Poke Cup is L50-55, but the levels of your chosen 3 cannot exceed 155. Being 5 levels under one enemy at 50 is a lot less punishing than 5 levels under at 15.
Thing is, that Alakazam is so stacked that it'll often deal 80% damage on a resisted hit. The only way you could beat it with rentals is landing a lucky freeze with a Lapras, but you have to avoid the 20% critrate too.

>> No.10491951

Heads up niggus, in Stadium 1 you can pretty much beat the entire game with kadabra/nidoking/zapdos/jolteon/starmie/articuno and graveller/wepinbell here and there, Stadium 2 on the other hand all the rentals fucking suck and you'll need to have very specific teams on every round of round 2

On topic, for me its Pinball

There's also the fact that their pokemon have better stats and movesets, whereas you're often forced to pick something like Kadabra over Alakazam due to the former's moveset being better despite the worse stats.

Here are the ones I'd recommend.
>Mystery Dungeon Red/Blue & Time/Darkness/Sky
Offers the full Pokemon experience with a more emotional story and more challenge.
R/B is one of the comfiest games you'll ever play, T/D/S has more Pokemon and more things to do. Both are worth your time.
The "being turned into a Pokemon" aspect is love it or hate it, but otherwise all Pokemon fans will enjoy these. The quality of the Mystery Dungeon games became spotty after these two so don't feel the need to play any of the sequels.
>Pokemon Puzzle Challenge (GBC)
Panel de Pon on the go. A really fun versus puzzle game with lovely sprite art that really captures the feeling of Gen 2.
>Pokemon Pinball / Ruby and Sapphire
Fun Pokemon-themed pinball. Very few tables but the ones that are there are great. Both are (about) equally good, the main difference is artstyle.
>Pokemon Ranger / Shadows of Almia
Fun action RPGs. The main draw is the fantastic pixel art that brings the Pokemon to life. Consider putting a screen protector on your DS before playing these though, I've heard some horror stories.
The first one has the sexiest female protagonist in the entire series (IMO). The second game improves on it in all other aspects. I can't recommend the third because I've never played it, but I have bought a copy and I'm looking forward to giving it a chance.
One thing to note is that the series does have a tendency towards long stretches of nothing but dialogue so if you hate talky RPGs these might be a skip.

Also, bit of an obvious pick, but Smash Bros. is a fun Pokemon experience.

>Anything that gives off the same vibes as the anime?
Not that I know of, and I've looked. Yu-Gi-Oh fans have Tag Force, but there's no true "I am the protagonist of my own Pokemon anime" game.
No matter its flaws, the Pokemon anime has a perfect nostalgic purity to it. The best RPGs I've played come close to that feeling but nothing has matched it yet.

You were just told that the MAIN "CAMPAIGN" MODE of Stadium 2, namely the Gym Leader Castle the game literally tells you you are the best in the world if you beat it, gives you rentals that are the same level as your opponents' Pokémon, meaning you don't need the Game Boy shit for it at all
