And if you still buy them but wait a while after they're out, how many gens behind are you currently?

>> No.10489475

For me, when PS360 came out, it introduced what's still going on today. The modernity. 6th was the start with PS2, but it was fullblown by 7th.

Though I completely checked out with 8th gen and haven't looked back (or forward, as it were).

It's weird how that chart gets some designations right, then others not.

I love retro games but honestly I never lost interest in modern consoles either. In a weird way I've actually found modern consoles to be a good source for retro gaming. Just this year I got the castlevania and Contra collections for less than $10 each off psn because even though I had some of the original consoles and cartridges it was much cheaper to buy the retro collection than seek out the missing pieces. If I'd bought the original versions of contra III, aria of sorrow and simon's quest it would have cost a pretty penny and I got them all for less than one cart would cost online.

I also got Bad Dudes, Final Fight, Metal Slug, Darkstalkers, Strider, Splatterhouse, Another World..my PS4 probably has as extensive a collection on it as any of my actual retro consoles. Even if retro is your thing it doesn't mean the current-ish gen has nothing to offer. Although I do usually stay one generation behind just for affordability

7th gen. It's when PC gaming got a lot more competitive against consoles rather than just being a nicher alternative to them, plus this was around the time where PC ports and multiports in general became a lot more common. I was considering picking up an Xbox 360 but i quickly realized that nearly every game worth playing in that system got ported to PC.

Other than buying a Nintendo machine for Nintendo games, there is no other logical reason to buy a modern console.

When games on the PS3 began requiring day one patches, I started looking at alternatives. My PC at the time was the shittiest Pentium 4 you can have in 2006 so my choices of games were the old stuff. PC gaming was much cheaper for me by 2010 straight out of high school so it made it easy for me to drop newer consoles for good. I still tried keeping up with the PS3 for the sake of keeping in touch with friends after high school but many of them stopped playing video games, moved onto the PS4 when it came out or switched to PC gaming as well. As for PC, I'm always several hardware generations behind since I play one set of games that run fine on the hardware I'm using at the time. I still play those same set of games today anyway so I've stagnated on an i7-4090k with an RX 580. Cyberpunk 2077 almost pushed me towards buying a brand new PC but I can still play it at over 60FPS at mid settings with 720p.

Same. Not that I think there’s anything inherently wrong with the “modernity,” as you put it. But there was basically no chance that I was going to get my hands on a PS3 at that time. Wasn’t until around ~2010 that I finally got one, and that was only because it came bundled with a TV.

I actually went through a period of losing interest in console games almost entirely from ~2008 to 2011. Dark Souls reawakened my love for vidya after I started to think I’d never play a truly engrossing game ever again.

Video games are full of irl bullshit now, so i might as well do irl since i'm hot here.

i do still enjoy *some* console games when visiting friends. With current consoles working like netflix, and them living in the city with fiber internet, there's always something i'll like, and there's usually something good already installed because transfems have the best taste in video games

Early 360/PS3 still had a lot of gameplay and graphical characteristics of the previous gen, with many big titles feeling like turbo-charged PS2 games on steroids. The Wii was basically just a GameCube with motion controls and 1st party Nintendo and 3rd party titles still felt like they had the creative spark of the GC days. I have great nostalgia for those days and I think it's silly that people write off the entire gen. Where they lost me, and many others, was after the insane success of Uncharted 2 and Sony's subsequent race to model every big game in that same style and the Last of Us. Xbox leaned hard into the Kinect and seemed hell bent on capturing the Wii audience for some reason, even though they were king and no one cared for waggle and Mii party games any more.

Xbox One, PS4 and Wii U is where I totally dropped off. The games just weren't made for people like me anymore. Most good PS4 games are on the PC save for Vanillaware titles and the odd last dying breath of Japan Studio like Gravity Rush, Last Guardian or Bloodborne.

When length started to become a priority for both consumers and developers, so now every title is full of filled and padding just for the sake of it... so around 7th and 8th generations to me...

8th gen. PS4/Xbone were PCs in a box.
At least 360/Wii/Triple had exclusive games and all were doing something a little different. First half of 7th gen wasn’t bad at all, but was certainly the beginning of the end.
Wii was basically an overclocked GameCube so it was an extension of 6th gen in a way.

This is true. If there is no uniqueness to the platform then there is really no reason to buy it. I don't have a Nintendo Switch but much like the Wii and WiiU there are several games that can't be ported without the controls being ported. Microsoft should have kept developing the Kenect and Sony the EyeToy. Even if they reduced the material cost and didn't grow the features too much it would be enough to argue that they have something "special". However, today MS and Sony have nothing special, just a proprietary shaved down PC.

Gave up on modern PC gaming when everything became a locked down service or DRM bound, online authentication bullshit. But then again, by that point all of the worthwhile PC exclusive genres like RTS were already dieing out, so while sad to see my favorite childhood platform rot away, it never felt like i was missing that much by that point.

I won't touch anything Microsoft starting with the Bone. Not buying hardware i need to fucking register online before i can even use it. Likewise, i may be done with Sony too now if they keep going with this "register your disc drive online" bullshit. Nintendo is pretty much the only source left I will have for a traditional games machine, with no subscription, online activation cancer required, just plop a game in and play design. Hoping their toy company roots maintains that, but if not, well guess im just done keeping up with modern gaming.

>> No.10490887

I started losing interest when the N64 came out. I finished when whatever came after the Xbox 360 came out. Right now I'm catching up on the DS library using a DS I bought when that was new and then left in a plastic bin for fifteen years. (The battery still worked pretty well!)

I never lost interest in new games but once the world of available games became so large as to be effectively infinite (thanks to freeware and indie games on PCs and the ever-growing power of emulation + piracy) I stopped needing to stay on the cutting edge of big budget games made for fast hardware in order to continue finding new (to me) games to play. Today I could easily spend a few years learning about the Genesis, for example, and never at any point play a game that wasn't new to me, since I never had a Genesis as a kid. Or I could get some free or cheap indie roguelike for PC and burrow into that for a year. Or I could get into some recently minted classic (I did this a few years ago with Dark Souls, and loved it). I rarely need new hardware for any of that.

A big exception is weirdo Nintendo stuff that has its own special I/O gimmicks, or stuff like Steel Battalion or Boktai that uses unique hardware (not that I care greatly about those two games - they're just examples). I feel that I have to eventually buy a 3DS just to explore that crazy 3D gimmick - even if it's shallow and bad, I HAVE to try it and find out how and why it's bad. And it might be awesome. Either way, it's too interesting not to try. Another big exception would be multiplayer communities, since those die out eventually - but I'm only interested in those insofar as AI can't accurately simulate a human opponent/ally, since humans bring a lot of problems into games that I'd rather do without, such as big delays when you're waiting for them to take their turns, big frustration when they ragequit or whatever, and the mental load of having to filter out their idiotic chatter.

Like don't get me wrong I got enough out of it in the end because things like waiting for the EGS versions of Kingdom Hearts also would have been awful but the writing was on the wall before Sony started going nuts halfway through the generation and I nearly stopped buying games for it for the last few years knowing the PC version would come out by the time I got around to them.

But none of the console makers thought it was worthwhile to make a decent make sandbox game. I guess people liked SMM. It was a big meh to me, all the retro PC sandbox games have more dimension and character. The new PC sandbox games blow the door of SMM.
