Shmups were better when they were simpler.

I prefer the modern ones just because of respawn

Agree to this. 8-bit and 16-bit shmups are fun but I have a hard time getting into some of the popular 32-bit ones (aside from cute 'em ups). I want to try Eliminate Down at some point too

NOOOOOOOOOOO YOU GOTTA LOVE AND APPRECIATE THE BULLET HELL PATTERN DETERMINING HOW YOU SHOULD PLAY AND LEAVING YOU NO ROOM FOR PLAYER EXPRESSION

Yeah this, I prefer the gameplay of old (don’t care for bullet hell) but without the gradius power up system and respawn. Yeah im a casual idc, just making conversation.

There are decades of great scroll shooters between 1942 and modern bullet hell. No need to go to the extreme and pretend early games like Xevious and 1942 are somehow better than Gradius or Darius. Is Defender better than Gradius as well

I wish they evolved much earlier to an rpg/adventure fusion like Monolith did in 2017

They were better when they were about SHOOTING instead of DODGING.

Cave was the worst thing to happen to the genre.

That's not rpg/adventure, that's rogueshit and it's a blight regardless of what genre you mix it with.

Agreed.

1942 had the perfect difficulty.
Every death feels deserved, no sudden difficulty spikes like so many arcade shmups, no having to die until you memorize some pattern, and all without ever feeling too easy.

Let's talk about dodging scroll shooters. I like Dogyuun because it has a dodge powerup. It just lets you dodge. Now that's I'm talking about none of that shooting shit

Yeah, so what? Video games aren't a job. I got 1cc clears for all shot types on Mushimesama novice because I enjoyed it. Other than that I just play the games.

I mean I kind of feel this way about most genres and games. I feel like a lot of games have a too much content problem right now. It's like they aren't made to be replayed. You're supposed to just slog through it all once.

>aren't made to be replayed. You're supposed to just slog through it all once.
Everything is replayable once you forget the game in the first place. I'm retarded so I can play the same game once every decade and it'll feel brand new to me, I'll remember nothing
