Only bad thing about it is that this is peak. There is nothing else that can really best it in a Rail shooter. Vanark and Panzer Dragoon come close, but there is something with S64 that makes me come back.

Agree that's a lot more fun than most mundane collect-a-thons for this era

It looked a lot more fun when it was released back then too

Would still probably pick gauntlet over that and no it's not a collect a thon because it was linear and had keys/doors/items/etc

Its like the staff who made this all died or something after release. Or like Nintendo accidentally made a really good arcade game and then couldn't do it again because they have severe autism. Everything they tried to add in sequels(not sfa) just didn't work because it's not a Zelda or Mario game.

64 was the only Starfox completely developed Nintendo.
>Or like Nintendo accidentally made a really good arcade game and then couldn't do it again because they have severe autism
They were actually going to have an arcade box for SFAssault (which would explain why it was so linear) like they did with Fzero GX too, but that fell through along with Namco.

Ironic shitpost or not, rail-shooters genuinely are obsolete as a genre, hence all releases being remakes, intentional throwback indie games like Ex-Zodiac, or Raw Thrill making shit like movie tie-ins or Halo Fireteam Raven.

Genre likely died out due to death of arcade machines. They are amazing games to put in an arcade cabinet with insert coin to continue. Doesn't require knowledge to get started, just boot up and start shooting and git gud by playing, no need to know where to go. Great casual game.

GTA3 happened. Unironically.

Nobody will pay $60 for a 2 hour long game anymore when GTA offered hundreds of hours of gameplay in an open world. Look at every single AAA game in the past 15 years. Open world.

the frustrating part is SF64 isnt 100% a rail shooter either. so youll never be satisfied completely with anything else. i guess it helps that nintendo was an outsider to the genre so they had their own little spin with it.

What this anon >>10488227 said. They're games that thrived in the arcades they came from, which were a.) social environments where other people would be seeing and competing with your scores, and b.) trying to get money from you. You want to do well, you want your name on the score board, so you have to get a lot of points. You keep missing enemies, denying you points, so you have to keep feeding in money to retry the stages and perform better.

'90s consoles were all about trying to emulate arcade games, because that was the most advanced stuff available. Of course Star Fox wasn't up to snuff in a technical capacity with its direct inspirations like Starblade, but it was a huge deal anyway because it served as a decent approximation at home, with the Nintendo charm and aesthetics on top. A few years later Star Fox 64 was still a big deal for the same reasons, on top of it possessing features lacked by much of the N64's library, like full voice acting and actually good controls. Look at a contemporary of SF64, something like Rogue Squadron 1; great game, but on the actual N64 it runs like shit compared to Star Fox, it's much slower and there are never as many ships flying around at once, because you roam wide environments with complex geometry and the NPCs have actual AI pathfinding. As a matter of fact, the original Star Fox was going to be a free-roaming game until Miyamoto decided on the linear obstacle course design because it offered much better performance. Star Fox 1's developers ditched on-rails gameplay entirely as soon as they developed more powerful hardware, hence Star Fox 2 not including any of it whatsoever.

Flash forward to current year, and arcadey games in that vein are considered novelty throwbacks or budget titles in the public consciousness. "Traditional" Star Fox is kind of a bad value proposition at full price; nobody wants to pay $60 for a Triple-A game they'll beat in an hour, even if it's supposed to be replayable.
